  7. Poland can qualify with a loss only if they lose to Italy with more sets won than USA vs Germany. USA only needs to win two sets vs Germany and they qualify no matter what is the result of Italy vs Poland. Poland basically has to win at least two sets to stand a chance. If they lose 1-3 the only result for them is Germany win 3-0 which is the least probable out of the entire set IMO.

Guadalajara 1000 has been skipped by many top names who focused on the Asian double-header coming up (WTA roadmap is total crap - brand new information) so we have a somewhat shocking final - Maria Sakkari vs Caroline Dolehide. If Sakkari can't beat Dolehide to finally add to her Rabat 250 title then she might as well never win a WTA title again. Dolehide saved 3 MP vs Martina Trevisan in the QF.

  14. Right prediction time. My hit rate on qualifiers at European Games was 25/44 (56.8%) and at the African Olympic qualifying tournament it was 9/18 (50%- Should have been higher but for some dodgy judging). So again first of all, the usual fun that comes with unseeded draws. (There is a slightly under 50 50 chance that the best two boxers in any weight class in an unseeded draw so close to half of these won't have the best two boxers actually make the final. So just under 25% of the qualifiers where only the finallists qualify are "wrong". (I could figure out the number for the events with 4 qualifiers but the maths gets much more complex) The combination of most of these only offering two qualifying spots and unseeded draws is surprisingly disastrous but sure anyway.) Starting with the women. Obviously I have virtually no guage watsoever on the North Korean boxers although historically they do tend to qualify a couple of boxers to the Olympics. Women's 50kg Gold- Nikhat Zareen, Silver- Nazym Kyzaibay , Bronze- Wu Yu ,Tsukimi Namiki , Other Olympic calibre boxers-Aira Villegas, Sabina Bobukulova , Thi Tham Nguyen ,Chuthamat Raksat . Certainly one of the more interesting weight classes. At the top of the draw Nazym Kyzaibay has a relatively straightforward path to the semifinals with only Aira Villegas potentially offering much resitance. Wu Yu is reigning world champion (Obviously take all of this year's world champs results with many grains of salt) at 52kg and starts off against North Korean opposition and then likely faces Sabina Bobukulova who is reigning Asian under 22 champion but has basically no results at senior level yet although her getting selected over Aziza Yokubova indicates she must be at least decent. On the other side of the draw last years Asian silver medallist Tsukimi Namiki fights Chuthamat Raksat in what effectively serves as a qualifying fight given the quality of the boxers they would face in a quarter final. While most of this draw was fairly even last years Asian champion and world silver medalist Thi Tham Nguyen gets a nightmare draw with world champion Nikhat Zareen in the only round of 32 fight in this weight class. Nikhat Zareen got one or two questionable close fights go her way at her home world champs so while she starts as favourite here she is only a marginal one. Womens 54kg Gold-Zhaina Shekerbekova ,Silver-Cholmi Pang, Bronze- Hsiao Wen Huang , Nigina Uktamova. Other Olympic calibre boxers Preeti , Enkhjargal Mungunsetseg , Jutamas Jitpong , Yuan Chang , Rinka Kinoshita . Zhaina Shekerbekova is reigning Asian champion and has a fairly straightforward path to the semis with just Preeti offering some level of competition. The second bracket of this draw is chaos. If you had told me before the draw that Enkhjargal Mungunsetseg, Hsiao Wen Huang, Jutamas Jitpong and Yuan Chang were the eventual qualifiers I would have believed that as a perfectly reasonable outcome. Hsiao Wen Huang is reigning world champion so starts as favourite for the qualifying spot although she lost to Shekerbekova at last years Asian champs (So did Jitpong). Jitpong has consistently medalled at this level in recent years but just gets a nightmare draw here. I'm not sure why Yuan Chang has moved up from flyweight to bantamweight and not Wu Yu but sure. Chang is a former flyweight world champion so it feels weird to not pick her as a home boxer but. The bottom half of the draw is weaker but not empty Cholmi Pang was world champion back in 2018 at flyweight but hasn't competed since 2019. She faces Tokyo Olympian Im Aeji in a korean derby followed by likely Thi Ngoc Tran Nguyen . The final qualifier is likely to be Asian under 23 champ Nigina Uktamova although her likely quarter final against Rinka Kinoshita will likely be close. Women's 57kg Gold-Karina Ibragimova ,Silver- Lin Yu ting , Bronze- Xu Zichun , Satsuki Yoshizawa . Other Olympic calibre boxers- Parveen , Nesthy Petecio . Xu Zichun has effectively an qualifying fight against Parveen in the last 16. Parveen was a world medallist and Asian champion in 2022 but at 63.5kg so it is a bit strange to see her pop up on the startlist here but she beat out some 2022 world bronze medallist Manisha for this spot so she must have adjusted to the new weight fairly well. One of the more interesting fights is former* world champion Lin Yu Ting (barring eligibilty issues) against Olympic silver medallist Nesthy Petecio. Karina Ibragimova should retain her asian title here and has as straightforward a draw as possible to make the final with only the unknown element of Jinhyang Paek as a potential stumbling block. Satsuki Yoshizawa does have a win against Olympic champion Sena Irie on her resume but is only really a likely qualifier here based on being on the easy side of the draw. Women's 60kg Gold- Oh Yeonji ,Silver- Wenlu Yang, Bronze-Thananya Somnuek , Wu Shihyi . Other Olympic calibre boxers- Rimma Vollossenko , Ayaka Taguchi , Nominerdene Tugsjargal . The top of this draw is very weak and effectively sees a quarter final battle between Asian under 23 champion Thananya Somnuek against Rizwa Pasuit in a fight that could easily go either way. Oh Yeonji has been the dominant force in Asia at lightweight in recent years especially since Sudaporn Seesondee retired. She opens her tournament against Won Ungyong before a likely quarter final against world bronze medallist Jaismine . Wu Shihyi has a fascinating fight against Rimma Vollossenko in her opening fight in another very even fight on paper. Taguchi and reigning Asian silver medallist Tugsjargal meet in their last 16 fight for the chance to likely face world bronze medallist Wenlu Yang in a hypothethical quarter final. This is one of the weakest weight classes relative to the rest of the world. Women's 66kg (Top 2 to qualify) Gold- Liu Yang ,Silver- Janjaem Suwannapheng , Bronze- Natalya Bogdonova , Nien Chin Chen . Other Olympic calibre boxers- Navbakhor Khamidova . At the top of the draw Natalya Bogdonova has basically no pedigree but Kazakhstan is typically strong at this weightclass and her only competition for a medal is Tsetsegdari Myagmarsuren . The quality in this draw is in the second braket where multiple time world medallist Janjaem Suwannapheng faces reigning Asian Champion (weak field) Navbakhor Khamidova in her last 16 fight. The winner will have an easier quarter final against Mito Kai or Sujin Seo. Yang Liu is reigning world champion (in somewhat controversial circumstances (Imane Khelif )) faces an intriguing path facing Hyoson Hwang followed by 2021 youth world champion Arundhati Choudhary prior to a likely semi final fight against experienced Nien Chin Chen. Women's 75kg (Top 2 to qualify) Gold- Qian Li ,Silver-Lovlina Borgohain , Bronze-Baison Manikon , Diem Quynh Luu . Other Olympic calibre boxers- Valentina Khalzova . There are somewhat surprisingly only nine entries here and thankfully the two likely qualifers are on opposite sides of the draw because otherwise there was the potential for a very weird qualifier here. Baison Manikon should medal against Aziza Zokirova and Erdenatuya Enkhbaatar . Lovlina is world champion albeit with a disproportionate number of the top middleweights being absent due to boycotts. Qian Li is the Olympic silvermedallist and current world bronze medallist*. Valentina Khalzova is a tough draw but one she will likely come through. Unsurprisingly given the lack of entries one of these medals was always going to be weird and here we have a fight between Diem Quynh Luu and Saraswati Rana . Neither of them have a recorded win on boxrec so . While Lovlina did get the decision over Qian Li at world championships, that was a blatant hometown decision and now of course home advantage is reversed so that is not a result I see being repeated here.

Cuban wrestlers are weird, they can be average for some years and then bang, beating everybody and win the gold Gabriel Rosillo surprised everybody by beating Saravi last night and he didn't stop there, he also beat the great Aleksanyan tonight to be the new king of 97kg. it was a disappointing day in general, Geraei getting humiliated like that (the match he won against JPN was even more humiliating) Alizadeh lost the a guy he beat 2-3 times before easily Azerbaijan is going to win the team title but at least winning two quotas made it a bit better at the end of the day. Iran and AIN (Belarus) won the remaining quotas in 5th place matches so here are the quotas for tonight 60: 97: Asia takes all 5 quotas in 60kg

  22. Given the popularity of those dancing shows and figure skating, dance sport was likely to have a lot of untapped potential. Low cost to host, great participation and full audience, the IOC sees this as a great addition. Expand this to other dance styles and you can have a potential mainstay.

  30. Canada has a great chance at finishing second in the overall medal count, but sometimes we struggle with gold medals so I think Brazil may have the edge there. Mexico continues to make the leap towards the Brazil/Canada tier. Colombia wins out in the next tier. While I think Argentina will get more medals, Cuba will win more golds to finish sixth. Chile uses the host nation boost to finish 8th, but close to Colombia/Cuba/Argentina. Despite falling off in recent years I think Venezuela gets 9th. Tenth is quite competitive. It likely comes down to either the Dominican Republic or Ecuador, but I'd also give a decent chance to Puerto Rico. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

  31. They usually manage to surprise sometimes, but this year they have been incredibly consistent. We'll see how they will be against the Netherlands tomorrow, but regardless of what happens it's already a very good competition for them.

  34. Less than one month to go, should we do some medal table predictions? As usual, USA is too far ahead of the field, with Canada and Brazil fighting for second. From what I've seen, Canada has a very strong team in many sports. Of course a reduced Athletics team can hurt their medal tally, but Brazil isn't that strong in this sport even with most of their best athletes. Given recent results in the Central American Games, I think Mexico has the edge over Colombia. Mexico was top 3 in Lima 2019 and definitely have the potential to be top 5 again. Argentina is the one nation that I think that could spoil this top 5 (they were 5th in 2019), especially ahead of Colombia - which won more medals last year at the South American Games. Once a top sports nation, Cuba is declining in recent multi-sport competitions, but still could make top 7. Wouldn't be that surprising if Chile got a massive home advantage and got better than 8th (which is the same result they had in 2019). For 9th/10th, Ecuador and Venezuela are too close. Dominican Republic could finish ahead of both, though, just like it did in 2019. A former top 10 in their home Games, I don't think Peru will repeat the feat this time. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

  41. preview As soon as the rest of the teams get named, I’ll do a PT. 2 (which will also go over my Canada Pan Am Games Olympic quota predictions) In swimming/open water swimming, we’ll be sending 38 athletes, most notably Tokyo 2020 Olympic Champion Maggie MacNeil (women’s 100m butterfly), and Sydney Pickrem (women’s 200m individual medley). Other than those two, we’ll be sending a B-team. In taekwondo, we’ll be sending 9 athletes, including 2019 World Championships bronze medalist Skylar Park. Majority of the team is an A-team, but we’ll be sending some B athletes with Angelique Orozco instead of Vivian Tranquille and Braven Park instead of Nicolas Hoefling. In softball, we’ll be sending a full team of 16 athletes, including 7 that were on the Canadian roster that won bronze at Tokyo 2020. In canoe slalom, we’ll be sending 4 athletes (A-squad). In karate, we’ll be sending 6 athletes, pretty much an A-squad except for former #1 Haya Jumaa (who was pregnant for some of this year, she actually attempted to qualify through the last chance qualifying tournament but was unsuccessful) In table tennis, we’ll be sending 6 athletes (A-squad), including Tokyo 2020 Olympians Mo Zhang and Eugene Wang. As the mixed doubles event awards Paris quotas to the top two teams, it’ll be especially important to reach the final. In racquetball, we’ll be sending 4 athletes (again an A-squad) with various medal chances after earning four medals at last years World Championships. (however all of the nations were Pan American) In wrestling, we’ll be sending 11 athletes, and an A-squad, with the only notable absences being Linda Morais, Karla Godinez, Samantha Stewart, and Diana Wiecker (either their weight class isn’t here or they got beat out at trials) In diving, we’ll be sending 9 athletes, and an A-squad, with many star names including 2023 World Championships bronze medalists Caeli McKay (women’s 10m) and Pamela Ware (women’s 3m), 2022 World Championships bronze medalists (in men’s 10m synchro) Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombar Murray, and 2022 World Championships silver/bronze medalist Mia Valee (women’s 3m/1m). In breaking, we’ll be sending 3 athletes, and with this being a Paris qualifier, obviously it’ll be an A-squad. Philip Kim won gold (2022) and silver (2021) at the last two editions of the World Championships, he’d be our best chance for a quota. (if he hasn’t already qualified through this years Worlds) In sport climbing, we’ll be sending 10 athletes (A-squad). Tokyo 2020 Olympians Alannah Yip and Sean McColl (women’s/men’s combined) are the biggest names competing. Sanders, Grossman and Ramboutou will most likely sweep the podium for the US, don’t see Yip qualifying here. Ethan Pitcher (men’s speed) and Sean McColl will have some tough opposition in Zach Hammer, and Sean Bailey, but both certainly have a chance. In squash, we’ll be sending 6 athletes (A-squad), including 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medalist and world ranked #19 Hollie Naughton and former world ranked #18 Danielle Letourneau. In skateboarding, we’ll be sending 4 athletes (A-squad), including Ryan DeCenzo (men’s street), and 13 year old Faye Ebert (women’s park). Cordano Russell, Micky Papa, and Matt Berger (all men’s street) won’t be competing due to the one athlete per NOC (per event) rule. In handball, we’ll be sending a women’s team of 13 athletes (A-squad). No real expectations here, hoping for a top 5 finish. In bowling, we’ll be sending 2 athletes (A-squad), including François Lavoie, who won bronze at the 2018 World Championships in men’s doubles alongside Dan MacLelland. In fencing, we’ll be sending 18 athletes (A-squad), including many Tokyo 2020 Olympian and world ranked #8 Eleanor Harvey (women’s foil). A good result here for our (and US’s) teams, would get us a lot closer to Paris qualification. In boxing, we’ll be sending 13 athletes. Pretty much an A-squad, no Caroline Veyre though. Scarlett Delgado (women’s 54kg), 2022 World Championships silver medalist Charlie Cavanaugh (women’s 66kg), 2022 World Championships gold medalist Tammara Thibeault (women’s 75kg) and Tokyo 2020 Olympian Wyatt Sanford (men’s 63.5kg) are the biggest Canadian names competing. In triathlon, we’ll be sending 6 athletes. Pretty much an A-squad on the women’s side, with Dominika Jamnicky and Emy Legault competing. No Amelie Kretz though. On the men’s side, a B-squad as both Charles Paquet and Tyler Mislawchuk aren’t competing. In waterskiing/wakeboarding, we’ll be sending 6 athletes. Don’t follow this sport too much, but I do believe this is an A-squad. Dorian Llewellyn (who won gold in men’s tricks and silver in men’s overall at the 2023 World Championships), and Whitney Rini (9x World Champion) highlight our roster. In artistic swimming, we’ll be sending 9 athletes (A-squad). Good chance for us to qualify either a team or a duet. In beach volleyball, we’ll be sending 4 athletes. On the women’s side, it’ll be an A-squad with Brandie/Melissa competing, while on the men’s side it’ll be a B-squad with MacNeil/Russell competing. In sailing, we’ll be sending 15 athletes (A-squad), including Tokyo 2020 Olympian Sarah Douglas (finished sixth in laser radial, best ever finish by a Canadian women). No Mofatt/Woods (instead Barnes/Jones will be competing) or the Lewin-LeFrance sisters (instead Millen/ten Hove will be competing). In athletics, we’ll be sending a reduced team of 27 athletes, including 2023 World Champion in men’s hammer throw Ethan Katzberg, 2023 World Championships silver medalist in women’s shot put Sarah Mitton, and 20km/35km/50km Canadian race walking record holder Evan Dunfee (won bronze in the 50km at Tokyo 2020). In badminton, we’ll be sending a A-squad (for the most part) of 10 athletes. Unfortunately, Michelle Li, Rachel Honderich/Kristen Tsai are still injured. Tokyo 2020 Olympian Brian Yang is the biggest name competing. In shooting, we’ll be sending an A-squad of 14 athletes. 2x Olympian Lydia Kiejko (women’s 10m air pistol/25m pistol) headlines the team, with Lindsay Boddez (women’s trap), Madeline Boyd (women’s skeet), Trystan Routledge (men’s skeet), Tugrul Ozer (men’s 10m air pistol), Madelene Scola (women’s trap), Gregory Sych (men’s 50m rifle 3 positions) also named to the team. As for quotas, we could have a few, but we could just as easily secure none.

    Thanks a lot this is very interesting to find Asian Games draw in Egyptian boxing facebook page based on what I see, only one of our 5 boxers will face UZB/KAZ/Refs before the semifinal. I guess we can't complain about the draw. hopefully they win couple of bronze medals. I have low expectations in this sport and Olympic quotas are probably out of reach.
