The rankings only came into play this year because of a very specific issue if the qualifying events went ahead, this doesn’t arise at all Yes it is written in the article: “Mandy planned her pregnancy according to the Olympic cycle, specifically so she would be ready to compete at these Olympic qualifiers” (probably referring to -later cancelled- qualifiers in early to mid 2020 before the Olympics supposed to happen originally) So this refers to an one off issue which arose because of Covid-19 NearPup
JoshMartini007 2,242 Posted July 2, 2021 #342 Share Posted July 2, 2021 Pretty much, but it does open the possibility of other athletes claiming the same thing. Here's a list of events which were cancelled and not rescheduled so the quotas were awarded either through world rankings or an earlier event. Boxing - Americas Qualifier, World Qualifier Canoeing - Pan American Sprint and Slalom Qualifiers Cycling - BMX Racing World Championships Gymnastics - Individual All-Around World Cup Series, Asian Artistic Championships Sport Climbing - Asian Championships Skateboarding - World Park Championships. Table Tennis - World Tour Event (Mixed Doubles), Oceania CQT The biggest loser is probably in women's BMX racing. Canada's Laurence Vincent-Lapointe is a bigger one, but Canada could have chosen her, but chose not to.

I wonder what she'd have done if they had set them for 2019 when she wasn't yet fit to compete. dcro

Last WC before Olympics has a very high chance of being qualifier. Also, what if another Canadian boxer would have been high up in the ranking, would she have tried to steal her spot? She won the Canadian trials which give her the chance to represent if a spot was won. She did not get that chance (to win a quota). She was also ranked #2 when she left to become pregnant. She benefited from a rare set of circumstances. Had the BTF revealed a less favorable qualification procedure (like having the continental qualifiers in 2019) or if another Canadian athlete took prominence then she wouldn't have much of a leg to stand on. The combination of being one of the best athletes prior to getting pregnant, BTF screwing Pan American athletes hard and having the full support of the Canadian Federation gave her the opportunity to strike. When she took a break to become pregnant, she didn't know when the Olympic qualification tournament would take place, since nobody knew. She didn't know when she would be able to get back to full training. She didn't know if she would be able to reach her previous best. I have nothing against Mandy Bujold. Much worse athletes have used loopholes to get a free pass to Olympics and boxing qualification has been bad. But, I am amazed at the way this CAS win is being seen as a great step forward for women's rights, when as @JoshMartini007 said, she making the best of an opportunity.
