Well for Romania realistic i expect 5-6 medals maybe 1-2 golds)

Rowing - we have the best chances to win some medals (2-3 medals) (1-2 golds)

Tennis - we have Simona Halep, women's doubles and mixed doubles

Fencing - Ana Maria Popescu in women's epee

Shooting - Laura Coman

Wrestling - Alina Vuc

Gymnastics - If Larisa Iordache will qualify she will have a chance in women's all around and beam

Swimmining - Robert Glinta in 100 m backstroke

Looking at your predictions, it saddens me that you are not back to your former glory. I miss the times when people here made a big deal out of Hungary v Romania at the Games because both of us were expected to collect close to 10 gold medals or maybe even more. That rivalry was a lot of fun (as long as some didn't take it too seriously).

I definitely see you winning women's football as well, though team sports are always hard to consider a guarantee. And why not M basketball? Isn't that a lock-in for the US every games?

Must be a special experience following the Olympics from an American perspective (or Chinese for that matter). Medal candidates in virtually every sports and so many athletes to follow.

W Football will be favored, for sure, but USWNT was tied 1-1 with Sweden yesterday.   And Sweden eliminated US in Rio in QFs.  Plus, I heard that USWNT did not look impressive.  I think  UK is going to be a tough opponent.

M BB, will also be favored, of course,  but the make-up of the  team matters and US Men Basketball was 7th in 2019 FIBA World Cup.

After what has happened this weekend, I should add Swim W 200 FS and 400 FS to the almost certain list.

Softball is probably also a sure gold for the US, no?

I'm hesitant only because US lost to Japan in 2008 gold medal game, and of course, Japan will be highly motivated at home and there will only be Japanese fans in the stands.  But US should be in the gold medal game.

So let's break down what I expect :GBR to do in Tokyo.

First thing to say is that it will be the worst GBR performance since 2004 but a lot better than anything in the last half of the 20th century.

Athletics 4 medals including 1 gold. Heavily favouring the women's events

Boxing    3 medals including 1 gold.

Canoeing 3 medals incuding 1 gold

Cycling - down a lot on previous Olympics but still 5 medals including 2 golds (women's distance races on the track will still be hard to beat)

Equestrian - 4 medals (2 gold) , I expect GBR to win both eventing golds. Also would not be shocked if Charlotte Dujardin wins a 3rd dressage gold (her horse is young and improving whilst the best German horses are getting old)

Gymnastics - 3 medals inc 1 gold. Whitlock to retain pommel horse title

Judo - 1 medal

Modern Pentathlon - 2 medals inc 1 gold

Rowing - 3 medals inc 1 gold

Rugby - 1 medal

Shooting - 2 medals inc 1 gold (both in shotgun classes)

Skateboarding - 1 medal

Swimming - 5 medals inc 2 gold (Peatty will repeat)

Triathlon - 2 medals

Football - 1 medal

Taekwondo - 4 medals inc 2 gold

Total 44 medals 15 gold

Down from 67 medals 27 gold in Rio

Edit -I forgot Sailing .

3 medals 1 gold

Revised total 47 and 16

Poland won 11 medals each of the last three SOG.

I'll say they can win 11 fourth time in a row. 3 golds (most likely from Anita Wlodarczyk in W Hammer, Pawel Fajdek in M Hammer, Men's coxless fours in rowing).

Count in Men's volleyball but we always screw the joint at the Olympics. Maybe it will change here.

Biggest potential gold medal surprise that won't be a total upset is Katarzyna Niewiadoma in women's elite road race.

Minor medal hopes: Marta Walczykiewicz in canoeing, women's 4x400 relay, Marcin Lewandowski 1500m in athletics and maybe someone from judo/wrestling with a rare run that usually tends to happen to us quite frequently.

Brazil:

Athletics - 0-2
Boxing - 1
Canoeing Slalom - 0-1
Canoeing Sprint - 1-2
Cycling - 0-1
Fencing - 0-1
Football - 0-2
Artistic Gymnastics - 1-3
Judo - 1-2
Sailing - 1
Shooting - 0-1
Skateboarding - 2-3
Surfing - 2-3
Swimming - 1-2
Open water swimming - 1
Taekwondo - 0-1
Tennis - 0-1
Volleyball and Beach Volleyball - 0-2
Weightlifting - 0-1

So, worst case scenario is 10, best case scenario is around 30. Judo, volleyball and artistic gymnastics could realistically provide more medals, but it would be far too optimistic to expect more than what I'm already expecting from these sports. There are also very long shots in table tennis and archery; chances are like 5% in these sports.

I'd say 15 is a solid number -- a little bit conservative, but solid nevertheless.

    • I read now that Valentina Rodini will be in the new team of Tizzano + Galtarossa and Martini. I was probably in such an information bubble on Instagram that I thought that only Abbagnale was running a campaign and had a team of people around him. That's why I was surprised by his defeat + the fact that, for example, Rodini supports his rival. But as I wrote, for me the change in the general coach position is a plus. We need a new opening and a new impulse: Cattaneo had his best results in Tokyo and then he only explained that his rowers were running away abroad to the USA to study and that's why he had worse results. Ok, except that it's the same in Romania and Greece but they results are comparable or better. It's obvious that no one here will make the UK or the Netherlands, because we don't have such resources and money but I think we can repeat the Romanian results (2 gold - 3 silver in Paris) and that will be a much better result than the 2 silver in this year.
    • Abbagnale boasted that he had 80 per cent a few days before the vote (I still have the screen) and ran again as a result of a power deal. Not a great loss.   I have doubts about the new technical director though, you can't announce him during the congress, brandishing the scalp of the Abbagnale era technical staff (who then, were Crispi's men). Let's hope there are no rifts between the new staff and the athletes, it had to be handled better.
    • I was surprised by Abbagnale's defeat. I thought he was a sure of victory, since he decided to run - I read some source that he didn't know if he would start before Paris 2024. What do you think about it?

    • Cattaneo was good but his peak was in Tokyo 2021. Then there was such stabilization - stagnation. In Paris the result was in line with expectations but without the wow effect. They threw everything that was best into the quadruple sculls and it was enough for a only silver. Now without the lightweight sculls in LA I think that radical changes are needed to remain competitive. Previously there was a 3-year Olympic cycle due to Covid, so big changes weren`t good but now I think the time is right. Although of course more funds are needed for this sport in Italy, because even the best coach will not overcome this vel our men`s alpine skiing sector

    • Davide Tizzano (1996 Olympic Champion, men's double sculls) is the new President of the Italian Federation, as he defeated the (now former) President Giuseppe Abbagnale by a very small margin (52% to 48%) in last week's federal elections   and he's already at work to make up for the last 8 disappointing years (at least in terms of Olympic success): his first move is bringing back home  Antonio Colamonaci  who made  great in the past 8 years   https://www.oasport.it/2024/11/canottaggio-cambia-la-direzione-tecnica-dellitalia-arriva-il-guru-che-ha-reso-grande-la-romania/   let's see if he can make  great again, now
