What is the competition format in the 2 new classes? i was looking at the full schedule and see something called windsurfing marathon, and only 3 days for the kite, but cannot find any good explanation anywhere

it's quite a mess

in windsurfing, now the preliminary races are of 3 types: the classic fleet, the slalom course and 1 longer fleet race (called Marathon)

at the end of the prelims, the best sailor advances directly to the final, the 2nd and 3rd ranked advance to the semifinal and the remaining 7 of the top 10 (the actual medal contenders) go through to the quarterfinal race

the top 2 of the quarterfinal advance to the semifinal, then the top 2 of the semifinal advance to the final, where the 3 finalists decide which medal color they get

in kitesurfing, after the prelims, the top 2 advance to the final, meanwhile the remaining 8 among the top 10 are divided into 2 semis of 4 sailors each (serpentine system is normally used)

here the best of the 4 starts with 2 "ghost wins", the 2nd best with 1 "ghost win" and the other two with no bonus points

the 1st to get to 3 wins (ghost wins included, of course) wins the semifinal round and advance to the final, where we have the same scheme: the 1st of the prelims starts with 2 "ghost wins", the 2nd with 1 "ghost win" and the 2 kitesurfers coming from the semis with 0 bonus points

once again, the 1st to 3 total wins is the champion, then for the remaining places it's up to the number of wins in the final round and in case of a tie, the actual placing in the last regatta is the decider

I think we'll see a lot of occasional viewers (and also occasional broadcasters/reporters) with some strong headache come the Olympic thanks to these crazy formats

NBC posted a write-up about Daniela Moroz, which our Czech/Slovak users might find interesting: https://www.nbcsports.com/olympics/news/daniela-moroz-sailing-kite-olympics

“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair” - Nelson Mandela
