  4. my picks... Swimming, men's 200m Fly...who else? I think this is one of the most obvious picks so far... it's the winningest athlete in the history of sport, Michael Phelps... Swimming, women's 200m Backstroke...one of the classiest swimmers of all time, capable of winning gold medals as baby girl and as a true woman... Krisztina Egerszegi... Rowing, men's Single Sculls...this is one of the event with the richest history of the Olympics, more than 100 years of glory with many great champions... not an easy choice, but imho nobody has yet equalled the true GOAT, Perrti Karppinen... Canoeing, men's 1000m...in a discipline heavily marked by the Scandinavians, I feel I have to go with the only man winning 3 gold medals, Gert Fredriksson... Sailing, men's Skiff (49er)...looking at the results all this sailor have reached outside the single Olympic event, it's a close battle between Outteridge and Burling, but I feel I have to pick Peter Burling, the man with most wins other than the Olympics (considering also other classes)...

  13. win2day ICE Hockey League EC Red Bull Salzburg won their 7th title in the Austrian Open League on Monday night, when they defeated the Hungarian side Hydro Fehèrvàr AV19 by a score of 3-1 in game #4 of the finals and by sweeping 4-0 the entire series. Not only, they went undefeated through the whole playoffs run. It's only the second time in the League's history that a team achieves the socalled "perfect postseason". Thanks also to his unbelievable .950 save percentage (only 16 goals given up in 12 games, 2 of them going to OT), Salzburg's Finnish netminder Atte Tolvanen was named Playoffs MVP. 17. 2022 Italian Spring Nationals best of Day #4 basically, an off day...no truly remarkable clockings nor individual qualfying times for the upcoming World Champs were registered today in Riccione... the most exciting thing was an electric blackout that caused a 30-min break in the middle of the final session... however, here are today's champions: men's 100 Fly: 1.Piero Codia, 51.65 women's 100m Backstroke: 1.Margherita Panziera, 1.00.25 men's 200m Backstroke: 1.Matteo Restivo, 1.57.56 women's 200m Fly: 1.Ilaria Cusinato, 2.10.36 men's 200m Breastroke: 1.Luca Pizzini, 2.10.98 women's 50m Freestyle: 1.Silvia Di Pietro, 25.10 (24.97 in prelims) men's 200m Freestyle: 1.Marco De Tullio, 1.46.26; 2.Gabriele Detti, 1.47.50; 3.Stefano Di Cola, 1.47.55; 4.Stefano Ballo, 1.47.75 (all together, it's a qualfying standard for the World Champs for the men's 4*200m Free Relay) B-Final: 1.Lorenzo Galossi, 1.48.26 (new Junior NR) p.s. based on the results of all the 100m races of the single disciplines, also both the women and the men's 4*100m Mixed Relays and the 4*100m Mixed Medley Relay are officially qualified to the World Champs...
  18. unfortunately, it's not only 50/100m, it's the whole freestyle sector that's miles behind the world's excellence (Quadarella is just an exception to this "rule")... for what concerns the sprinters, however, there are a few historical, technical and cultural issues to prevent Italy being a good Nation in those disciplines... I don't know why? but we've always refused the idea of building up poweful swimmers, we normally care a lot about the technical skills and about the amount of kilometers swam by our athletes, but somehow we're always behind the rest of the world when it comes to develop strencht and power... especially among the girls and especially the very young girls, there's always the scare to ask them to put on muscles, we normally refuse to send them in the gym lifting weights until they're at least 16/17 years old, as if it was a risk for their health* (many doctors refuse to give permission to the youngsters to lift the necessary amount of weights...and if you don't build muscles, there's no chance to be competitive in the sprint events -if you notice, Italian swimmers are usually also always poor at the start and in the turns, 2 more aspects of the game where power is really important)... therefore, we have quite a good tradition over the middle and long distances, rather than the shorter ones...and if that's true among the men, imagine how bigger an issue it is among the women... *actually, many gorls refuse also by themselves to push beyond certain limits because they don't want to sacrify their femininity (here in Italy, women with strong muscles = no beautiful females for most people and for the average media...we still live in the myth of the most famous models rather than the TV starlettes, the athletes are rarely seen as role models)...
  19. here we go with the Rio De Janeiro stage for the Rifle and Pistol specialists... unfortunately, there are a lot of absent people among the top shooters... men's Individual 10m Air Rifle Gold: Petar Gorsa Silver: Sergey Richter Bronze: Miran Maricic Full Results page: https://www.issf-sports.org/competitions/venue/csevent.ashx?cseventid=15973 women's Individual 10m Air Rifle Gold: Anna Janssen Silver: Oceanne Muller Bronze: Laura Georgeta Ilie Full Results page: https://www.issf-sports.org/competitions/venue/csevent.ashx?cseventid=15976

  21. Denver Pioneers 'stick with it,' rally in third period to win school's ninth NCAA men's hockey crown Denver scored five straight third-period goals to capture the NCAA Division I men's hockey championship with a 5-1 victory over Minnesota State at TD Garden on Saturday night. It's the ninth title in program history for the Pioneers, tying Michigan's NCAA record for the most ever. Denver had eliminated the Wolverines in the semifinals of the Frozen Four to advance to the title game against the Mavericks. "It certainly was a goal to get to nine," said Denver coach David Carle. "The ultimate goal is to be the first one to 10, I will tell you. Winning Thursday against Michigan was a huge step in that direction, and obviously tonight is an even bigger step." Senior forward Ryan Barrow and sophomore defenseman Mike Benning scored 2 minutes, 47 seconds apart in the third period to erase Minnesota State's 1-0 lead, finally breaking through against a stingy Mavericks defense in front of Hobey Baker Award-winning goalie Dryden McKay. "I kinda blacked out. I just saw my teammates coming towards me and I had to [celebrate]," Benning said of his game-winning goal. "I thought I owed it to my teammates after taking that penalty." Denver goalie Magnus Chrona, a San Jose Sharks prospect, made 24 saves in the victory. "Did our guy have to make some saves? Absolutely. We utilized our goaltender to the extreme," said Carle. "Sometimes it takes all 60 minutes, and we utilized the last 20 to our fullest advantage." In the first period, Minnesota State struck first on the power play, with Benning in the box for tripping Andy Carroll. Junior forward Brendan Furry launched a shot from the left wing that Chrona kicked to the slot. The puck went through the legs of a Pioneers penalty killer to Mavericks winger Lucas Sowder, who made a quick pass to junior forward Sam Morton. With his momentum taking him backward as he shot the puck, Morton's one-timer found the back of the net with 6:01 remaining in the first period. The Mavericks would kill off a Denver power play and outshot them 8-3 in the opening frame. Minnesota State held an 18-8 advantage after two periods. "We just said, 'Stick with it.' We didn't get here by shying award from challenges," Carle said. "It took everybody to do what we did in the third period there." Denver finally broke through against McKay and the Minnesota State defense with 15:14 left in regulation. Freshman Jack Devine took a shot on right wing that McKay stopped with his pad, but senior winger Ryan Barrow was standing on his doorstep to deposit the puck into the net for the 1-1 tie. Morton took a tripping penalty 40 seconds later, putting Denver on the power play. Just seven seconds after that power play ended, Benning blasted a one-timer on a pass from defenseman Shai Buium for the 2-1 lead, as Minnesota State watched its advantage suddenly evaporate. "Once we gave up the first one, I thought we started leaking oil a little bit. Couldn't stop the bleeding. We started chasing the game," said Minnesota State coach Mike Hastings. Denver nearly made it 3-1, but the referees waived off a goal for incidental contact with McKay. But the Pioneers would put the game away with 6:26 left in the third period as freshman center Massimo Rizzo converted a 2-on-1 pass from freshman winger Carter Mazur. Forward Brett Stapley and Wright added empty-net goals for the 5-1 final score. Minnesota State made the Frozen Four for the first time last year, losing to St. Cloud State in the semifinals. This year, they ousted rival Minnesota with a 5-1 win in the semifinals Thursday before falling to Denver in the national title game. The loss likely marks the end of a remarkable college career for McKay. The 24-year-old set NCAA records with 37 wins and 34 shutouts this season for the Mavericks, becoming just the third goaltender to win the Hobey Baker and the first since former NHL goalie Ryan Miller in 2001. Interestingly, McKay did not win the Mike Richter Award as the nation's top goaltender, which went to Buffalo Sabres prospect Devon Levi of Northeastern. McKay went undrafted by NHL teams and is a free agent. He has one more season of eligibility left at Minnesota State but has indicated he doesn't intend to return for another NCAA campaign. "I gave up a bad rebound on the first [goal] and they capitalized," said McKay. "It would have been nice to make a few more saves for the guys. It just didn't happen." The Pioneers had last made the championship game in 2017, which was the last time they won the title. Carle took over from Jim Montgomery after that championship. At 32 years old, Carle becomes the fourth-youngest head coach to win a men's hockey national championship. Match Highlights
  22. very controversial situation...I hope finally someone can make a step back and allow this thing to be fixed without penalizing the athlete... however, this time she officially entered the Princesa Sofia representing Greece...
  23. Boxing, men's Heavyweights...since the only man with a better reputation of Teofilo Stevenson in the entire history of Boxing is not on the list, the choice is quite obvious...the great Cuban is my pick... Athletics, women's 400m HS...technically McLaughlin's effort in Tokyo is unmatched, but here my pick goes to Nawal El Moutawakel because of what her success means for the whole North African and Arabic world...it goes well beyond the gold medal itself (which already is the biggest honour an athlete can get)... Athletics, women's Triple Jump...here's a no brainer... Yulimar Rojas is just on another planet... Cycling, men's BMX Racing... Maris Strombergs is my pick since he's the only man capable of winning 2 gold medals in different Games so far... Cycling, women's BMX Racing...for the same reason of the men's pick, here I go with Mariana Pajon...
  24. 2022 Italian Spring Nationals best of Day #2 women's 50m Backstroke: 1.Silvia Scalia, 27.66 (new NR and World Champs qualifying time) men's 100m Backstroke: 1.Thomas Ceccon, 52.99 (World Champs qualifying time) women's 200m Breaststroke: 1.Francesca Fangio, 2.23.60 (after being on pace for a 2.22 for 180m at least) men's 100m Breastroke: 1.Niccolò Martinenghi, 58.57 (0.01 faster than Peaty at the British champs and World Champs qualifying time) no remarkable times in the remaining races of the day (women's 100m fly, 200m free and men's 50m fly)
  25. it's the 200m Freestyle... and frankly, it's just a decent clocking over the distance, nothing special... and also Christou has done quite well in both the 50m and 200m backstroke so far...
