MLB will NEVER let players go, this sport is way more popular in the US then hockey. People will simply not accept stopping the season for a month and it will really screw up the scheduling since they play every day. I would LOVE to see it happening, but it wont, not this time. MAYBE if L.A wins the 2024 olympics , MAYBE

The idea is only stopping for a week and nix the asg (that almost everyone hates, anyway) for that season.

Again, i never argued that USA Basketball are bigger, then Phelps or Bolt. But on par with them

So let's open up the question. out of all the athletes in Rio, if you will ask every sports fan in the world, which athletes will be overall most recognizable?

I Think it will be USA Basketball, Phelps, Bolt, Dojokovic, Murray. (Maybe Simone Biles as well)

Football players are bound to be more popular than any basketball especially when there's no James, no Curry. Durant or Anthony might be the most popular but nowhere near the level of a Neymar. Or a Bolt. Or the Tennis Big 4. Or a Serena.

ah cool, :) well you hardly can find something much more important in this world than SVK - CZE hockey match is :d

yeah divorce...well,  except hockey matches we still feel that we are like the same nation,:d  no. it´s hard to explain, but big majority of peoples there and here still regard us like two brothers, which few retarded politicians tried to convince that they can´t be together. the problem is that this bunch of corrupted bastards managed to split us without asking anyone if we agree, no referendum, nothing, just hey peoples give us few minutes of your attention! since next year we will be 2 independant countries. yipee !  ....

That is insane. It should have been put to vote. It was too big a decision.

Sure, and the clean russian athletes that were gonna be banned and there sacrifices during the 4 year cycle? Or because they are russian they dont have the same rights as other athletes? Banning someone for something he/ she hasnt commited is  hyprocracy. Anyone that tests possitive should fully take the punishment, but banning them beforehand, just fullfills other agendas than only clean sport.

Get tested and go under the IOC flag. At the end of the day their NOC and their state were the ones that failed them and I'd regretably put the other 10000 athletes' wellbeing and fairness over theirs. But it's a nice sob story, I'll grant you that. NBC should use it for their coverage.

Zakarin can also be added to the list of people who won't participate.

    3. The ROC is not allowed to enter any athlete for the Olympic Games Rio 2016 who has ever been sanctioned for doping, even if he or she has served the sanction.

Lol, people are sick of Efimova, I'm sick of Gatlin and Gay. But these guys will participate and fight for the medals.

About volleyball - I think that Russia will participate, president of FIVB had said about it earlier.

Gatlin makes a lot of us sick too. Hopefully there will be new anti-doping regulations that harm his ilk too. I'd argue for any offense to be punishable with 4 years. Get caught whenever and still miss the games.

Slovak athletes will live in one of the Olympic Village building with the Czechs. just read it, absolutely lovely news :d

Awesome. I was living in the Netherlands during Sochi and one of my finest memories of the games is being invited to watch the Slovakia vs Czech Rep game with people from both countries (a Canadian guy and myself were the only neutrals). I was expecting a lot of vitriol and instead it was extremely friendly. Velvet divorce indeed.

don't know who will replace him :mumble:

Pantano who just won a stage in the current tour. I don't know who'd take his place in the time trial during day 5.

It still depends on some medical test he'll take after the tour is over.

Romanova too I see now, but she wasn't really a medal favourite anyway.

Out of the Russians on the entry list, those two are the only ones who have served a doping ban.

There's still that sword of damocles hanging over RU, AZ, BY and KZ over those old samples tho.

Well the "good" guys tried, but missed. The whole situation of this state doping was for Sochi and it presumably ended after Sochi. So why didn't they demand all russian Sochi athletes to be DQed after those rat holes and whatnot? What has that situation have to do with Rio. Well Summer Games are way bigger than Winter. And they are now, which is huge. They would have made a mockery of Russia in front of the whole world, for something they did in the past. And it failed. I'm sure the higher powers are not happy. Erasing Sochi results won't have the same impact as this full ban would have had.

It's about paying for your crimes. Sochi might be done and over but being banned as a nation because as a nation you cheated your way to 13 gold medals would be a fit punishment. It'd send a message that this kind of shit is unacceptable. Going with "what's done is done" is irresponsible sick enabling and a mockery of the effort and sacrifices clean athletes go through during every 4 years cycle.

    I think Efimova stay home

    Looks like she is. Good.

And tbh, for my sister's sake I hope your synchro swim and rhythmic teams do make it

So, if Russia will not have full ban for what was this circus?

That the whole "hard stance on doping" rhetoric only applies to minnows and powerful countries can cheat as they like. Be prepared for Efimova's medal.

EDIT: actually, never mind, looks like she's banned

ATR is told the IOC has decided against banning the entire Russian team from the Rio Olympics.

President Thomas Bach and his executive board resisted huge pressure to ban Russia after several hours of discussion at an emergency teleconference on Sunday.

The IOC will announce the conditions under which Russian athletes can compete at the Rio Olympics shortly after 16:00 Swiss time when Bach holds a media teleconference.

Bach is set to announce strict eligibility rules for Russian athletes seeking to participate at the Games next month. The IOC is expected to leave the final decision in the hands of the international federations

    FROM ATR

Cowards. They've failed olympism and clean athletes. This is your legacy, Mr Bach.

I saw that article, and I've also seen several rebuttals to it from other black people who have been talking about how the game has smoothed tensions in volatile areas.

I guess is a case by case basis. Walking around hunting pokemon at 3 am would dangerous to anyone.
