  1. If you look back to 2016 a poll in Brazil in Mid July had 67% of Brazilians against the games taking place. Over 100 medical experts called for the games to be cancelled. Now I realise the Covid situation makes things different this year but I expect when the games get going and assuming all goes well regarding Covid interest will be as big as ever. I know my excitement is a lot less than for previous Olympiad but I expect once the games start it will rise. From reports from Team they say that they are receiving a very warm welcome from locals in their training and holding bases and no negativity. A lot of the negativity in Japan is political as there is an election in the Autumn. Thee was not a lot of excitement in the build up to Euro2020 but as the tournament started the interest mushroomed. Hopefully the Olympics will be the same and help lift the Covid gloom.
  2. officially 116 plus 11 alternates/Reserves. Largest team ever (previous 78).
  3. And gone again! They wont even be able to thank their sponsors if selected now! Strange.....
  4. Still no official confirmation from Team Ireland over our Judo team? Its the last team to be announced.
  5. Even if the did allow crowds in Tokyo they would not be allowed to cheer etc so it would be eerie in any case.
  6. Once the games start the lack of crowds in most sports will be forgotten. Athletics, beach volleyball, gymnastics and basketball will suffer from the lack of crowds but who notices crowds at rowing? Judo? wrestling? In any case Athletics is the second week and they reverse that decision if everything is going well. I attended the Boxing in Barcelona and for earlier rounds the arena was about 10% full. My family at home saw me in the crowd every day I was there as the camera kept homing in on the 20-30 noisy Irish bunched together. Even the finals were only half full. I also attened the tennis one day with Graf and other big names playing and the place was near empty. Very different in London admittedly.
  7. Thats a surprise. Really thought they would select Ian O'Sullivan. Disappointed in that to be honest.
  8. I am shocked I tell you Shocked. After coming from nowhere to qualify 4 boats at the final Regatta.?
  9. 1/ Probably Rugby Sevens. 2/ Without a doubt Men's Field Hockey. Daylight Robbery.
  10. How will athletes feel about no crowds? I am sure the majority will barely notice. The experience wont be the same but surely most athletes only care about the actual competition. The days of Olympic 'tourists' in the Olympic village are long gone. In any case TV audiences will still be enormous.
  11. Yes that's it exactly. They explained it on the Swim Ireland website. Hyland was the only OST swimmer invited and if he did not go we would have no relay team. does not normally accept OST invites. Our appeal on the 4 x 100 medley relay obviously went nowhere....as I expected.
  12. Shouldnt swimming be 10? Hill,McSharry,Walsh,Ryan,Greene and Wiffen. Plus the 4 x 200m Relay?
  13. Hasnt happenned at any of the qualifier events or track meetings on any grand scale.
  14. 5-7. Probably a lot higher than people expect but we have serious medal contenders in Rowing, boxing, gymnastics and slighter chances in Equestrian, Golf, Pentathlon and Taekwando. .
  15. Expect maybe for Over 110 and even without Hockey and Rugby Sevens would have had our largest team ever.
  16. If news from tonight. Shacarrie Richardson fails drug test at US trials.
  17. I presume the Medley Relay appeal has gone nowhere?
  18. New rankings are out! good news for in that we have qualified 11 from the rankings. Some of who just got over the line last night.
  19. So true. And we have the shooting quota to allocate yet.! Not to mention the Mixed Relay.
  20. I suppose that's good news for us. But to be honest I had not realised that both Irish riders were in their 60s so hardly going for the experience. Struggling to avoid last place will be their aim sadly.
  21. There were 317 cases in Tokyo yesterday. No major surge albeit a slight increase. UK had 22,000 cases alone yesterday and tonight there will be 40,000 in Wembley!
