  1. This ump doesn't seem to have a strike zone. Pretty ridiculous so far.
  2. Currently have rowing, softball and volleyball open in tabs. Been waiting 5 years for this!
  3. Thank you. I forget to look at names. I just didn't like the posts about mental illness and then this one. There are real arguments to be made, but we don't need to do that sort of thing.
  4. Since never. In my defence, I lived in Korea for 10 years and China for 4. I've only visited Japan. I get the xenophobia here, but I don't accept it. And I don't accept it from anyone else.
  5. Now here's something I can agree with because it's not based on identity politics.
  6. My god, she's Japanese. If you don't like the choice fine, but don't go after her ethnicity and identity. Taking away her achievements by calling it "wokeness" is garbage. She's the most recognizable Japanese athlete in 2021. Sorry if she doesn't fit your outsider qualification of what that should look like, but that doesn't mean she's not worthy of recognition or of her heritage. Should she go play tennis for Haiti? But then the same problem arises, she's only half Haitian (and not even born there). I guess she should just not exist in the sporting world, then. Otherwise it's just "Wokeness" and "diversity" instead of, you know, someone existing and being good at their sport.
  7. I understand the let down by the choice to light the flame, but let's not attack mental illness. She can have mental exhaustion and still do this.
  8. My reaction to the OC so far (besides the parade of nations):
  9. Cameroon takes the lead for best uniforms.
  10. I had the pleasure of working with a former Olympian last year and I got to grill him over his experience (coincidentally he competed in Vancouver). He said walking into the stadium was the highlight for him. He said you treat the Olympic competition like any other, but walking in under the lights and fanfare, he said it was other-worldly. I was happy to hear that because it's my favourite part of the of OC.
  11. I remember watching the voting for the 2020 Games. Lots of people thought Madrid was going to get these Games, I thought Istanbul would. I wonder if those two cities are breathing a sigh of relief now. I'm sure they will be amazing, but still has to be a disappointment for Tokyo.
  12. I would imagine being the next host in just a few months has something to do with it as well (I'm living in Beijing, btw).
  13. Terrible call to send that runner home. Could have had 2nd and 3rd with no outs.
  14. On one hand, I could see it as a "Look how far we've come as a species!" sort of thing. On the other hand, I doubt the IOC, and Germany specifically, want to focus so much on "Hey, we're not the Nazis anymore!"
  15. Canada should have won that game, they sat back too much with the lead. Oh well, now they need to win against GB.
  16. I'm on vacation only -1 hour to Tokyo time. Great schedule for me!
  17. This article says it's available on Roku: https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/cbc-and-partners-to-broadcast-3775-hours-of-olympic-coverage-heres-how-to-watch-1.6108316
  18. Glad Canada is winning, but they're leaving way too many runners on base. Won't be able to lose those opportunities against US/Japan/Aus.
  19. Is that make up on the new Mexican pitcher?
  20. I live in Beijing and everything is pretty much normal here now, and has been for months (there was a little scare in February, something like 6 confirmed cases). I can see them barring international visitors, but there's no reason to postpone if Tokyo is going forward and they're in a much tougher spot. China has strict quarantine rules (3 weeks mandatory government observed quarantine) but they want to reopen borders with some countries. The issue right now is other countries accepting the Chinese vaccinations as legit. Postponing the Olympics would pretty much be admitting that the Chinese one is not legit. I'd be really surprised if they postponed it.
