  1. Annemiek van Vleuten fell after 55 km, broke her knee, and still managed to finish in 7th place.
  2. Nice to see Stigger win in front of her home crowd.
  3. I think the dates in the opening post might be wrong.
  4. Good championships for the Dutch with golden medals in many different disciplines. These were my highlights from a Dutch perspective: First golden medal in diving in a very long time; Sharon van Rouwendaal winning 3 golden medals in open water swimming, just missing out on a fourth golden medal today, helping the Netherlands win the medal table in open water swimming. Winning the medal table in track cycling with 5 golden medals; Four Dutch women in the final of the BMX tournament; Sanne Wevers winning gold on balance beam again after a rough two-year period after Rio 2016; Sifan Hassan dominating the 5.000m today. At the same time, the Netherlands also had the most successful sailing world championships ever (winning the medal table) and the Dutch team won the hockey world championships in a very dominant fashion. So overall, August has been a great sporting month for us so far. Other achievements that I was very impressed by include the men's pole vault competition, Kolesnikov dominating the backstroke sprints, the Ingebritsen brothers winning gold and silver with Jakob winning two titles within 24 hours, and Dina Asher-Smith dominating the women's sprints with three golden medals.
  5. Impressive sprint from Hassan. Too bad that the scheduling is this bad, because I would have loved to see her run the 1.500m as well.
  6. Mixed 5km Team Relay: 1. Netherlands (Vermeulen/Van Rouwendaal/Smits/Weertman) 52:35.0 2. Germany (Beck/Koehler/Meissner/Wellbrock) 52:35.6 3. France (Grangeon/Aubry/Pou/Olivier) 52:46.7
  7. Yet only one Dutchman in the final. Qualified for women's final: Simone Tetsche Christensen Judy Baauw Laura Smulders Merel Smulders Manon Veenstra Natalia Afremova Yaroslava Bondarenko Natalia Suvorova Qualified for men's final: Jérémy Rencurel André Sylvain Kyle Evans Kye Whyte Joris Harmsen Evgeny Komarov David Graf Simon M Marquart
  8. Wow! A Dutch golden medal in diving. How?!
  9. The draw for the Final Six has been made: Pool A = Pool B = I would be surprised if either and/or makes it through to the semis.
  10. Ik heb zelf 10 jaar aan karate gedaan, ook meegedaan aan NL kampioenschappen voor jeugd/junioren, dus dan zal ik mij wel focussen op de Nederlandse prestaties in die sport.
  11. Another thing to note is that the majority of these Championships take place during the second half of the season (February/March), while the majority of the World Cups are skated before Christmas. That's why you see that there are always skaters who do well before Christmas in the World Cups but don't win medals at these Championships as other skaters manage to be in their best shape when it matters most.
  12. Yeah, this is terrible.
  13. We can try, though I have very limited time during the week. During the weekends I do have more time.
  14. Meh, Pedersen should have won.
  15. Other results that sort of surprised me: Min-Seok Kim, Olympic bronze medallist on the 1.500m, only finished in 3rd position here on the 1.500m 1,5 seconds behind Allan Dahl Johansson and 0,5 seconds behind David la Rue. Koki Kubo skated a new Junior World Record of 1.07,76 on the 1.000m, which is now also the new Japanese senior NR. All-round final standings: Boys: Allan Dahl Johansson Tyson Langelaar Francesco Betti Min-Seok Kim Paul Galczinsky Gabriel Odor Do-Hyung Lee Kaleb Muller Tjerk de Boer Casey Dawson Girls: Joy Beune Jutta Leerdam Elisa Dul Béatrice Lamarche Karina Akhmetova Lea-Sophie Scholz Ji-Woo Park Ekaterina Kosheleva Chae-Eun Park (born in February 2003) Ragne Wiklund
  16. Joy Beune skated three Junior World Records this weekend 1.000m: 1:14.21 (previous record: 1:14,95 by Hyun-Yung Kim [2013]) 1.500m: 1:54.21 (previous record: 1:55,14 by Marrit Leenstra [2008]) 3.000m: 3:59.47 (previous record: 3:59,49 by Antoinette de Jong [2013])
  17. Miho Takagi First Asian winner in the long history of the World Allround Championships (men since 1893, women since 1936)
  18. On the boy's side, the Dutch are not really dominant. After two distances, the best result is an 8th place on the 500m. They're currently ranked 8th, 9th and 15th in the allround standings after day 1.
  19. Women's 1.500m: Lotte van Beek missing out on 0,01 by finishing right after Leenstra. Women's 5.000m: Van der Weijden missing out on 0,19 by finishing after Voronina. So very close on both occasions.
  20. 14 Gold or Silver medals and only 12 4th-8th places.
  21. And that medal in 1998 was won by a Dutch speed skater who moved to Belgium to avoid qualification competitions in the Netherlands.
  22. Was shocked when I read on the news that we won a medal in shooting.
  23. Many Dutch speed skaters, including Sven Kramer (Gold 5.000m), Kjeld Nuis (Gold 1.500m), Patrick Roest (Silver 1.500m) and Esmee Visser (Gold 5.000m) all did it as well.
