  1. Other results that sort of surprised me: Min-Seok Kim, Olympic bronze medallist on the 1.500m, only finished in 3rd position here on the 1.500m 1,5 seconds behind Allan Dahl Johansson and 0,5 seconds behind David la Rue. Koki Kubo skated a new Junior World Record of 1.07,76 on the 1.000m, which is now also the new Japanese senior NR. All-round final standings: Boys: Allan Dahl Johansson Tyson Langelaar Francesco Betti Min-Seok Kim Paul Galczinsky Gabriel Odor Do-Hyung Lee Kaleb Muller Tjerk de Boer Casey Dawson Girls: Joy Beune Jutta Leerdam Elisa Dul BĂ©atrice Lamarche Karina Akhmetova Lea-Sophie Scholz Ji-Woo Park Ekaterina Kosheleva Chae-Eun Park (born in February 2003) Ragne Wiklund
  2. Joy Beune skated three Junior World Records this weekend 1.000m: 1:14.21 (previous record: 1:14,95 by Hyun-Yung Kim [2013]) 1.500m: 1:54.21 (previous record: 1:55,14 by Marrit Leenstra [2008]) 3.000m: 3:59.47 (previous record: 3:59,49 by Antoinette de Jong [2013])
  3. Miho Takagi First Asian winner in the long history of the World Allround Championships (men since 1893, women since 1936)
  4. On the boy's side, the Dutch are not really dominant. After two distances, the best result is an 8th place on the 500m. They're currently ranked 8th, 9th and 15th in the allround standings after day 1.
  5. Women's 1.500m: Lotte van Beek missing out on 0,01 by finishing right after Leenstra. Women's 5.000m: Van der Weijden missing out on 0,19 by finishing after Voronina. So very close on both occasions.
  6. And that medal in 1998 was won by a Dutch speed skater who moved to Belgium to avoid qualification competitions in the Netherlands.
  7. Was shocked when I read on the news that we won a medal in shooting.
  8. Many Dutch speed skaters, including Sven Kramer (Gold 5.000m), Kjeld Nuis (Gold 1.500m), Patrick Roest (Silver 1.500m) and Esmee Visser (Gold 5.000m) all did it as well.
  9. Yeah, this video is only one clip of her press conference. That one chance is indeed the mass start, but she also stated that she will announce the end of her career ... in four years.
  10. Pechstein has now confirmed in a press conference that she will indeed continue skating for four more years. She'll turn 50 in February 2022. https://sicher.sportdeutschland.tv/s/b53451a0ea5a013501277054d2ab776f/olympia-2018/pechstein-selbstbewusst-chance
  11. And a good chance for a third gold medal on the 1.000m on Friday!
  12. The expected - final in the women's team pursuit; and will fight for bronze.
  13. I phrased it incorrectly. I meant a medal at two different sports at the same Winter Games. Heikki Hasu was the last man to do so.
  14. Jorien ter Mors won gold on the 1.000m in long track speed skating (and two golds in 2014) and now a bronze medal as part of the short track relay. First woman ever to win medals in two different sports at the same Olympic Games, according to the Dutch broadcaster. Maybe Ledecka can be the second later this week.
  15. Causil finished in 20th place, finishing 0,54 seconds from the podium. Not a bad Olympic debut at all Only a 1 second difference between #1 and #27.
  16. Good first week for Dutch speed skating of course. I was rewatching some videos/interviews from the past week and noted that all Olympic champions in speed skating so far speak Dutch, including Bloemen of course, but also Kodaira. I really like how she comes across in interviews, she's very sweet. I was also really impressed by Erbanova's Dutch language skills. The interviewer was talking quite fast, but she understood everything and replied without taking time to think about how to phrase her answers.
  17. Erbanova almost faster than Lee. Who would have thought that?!
  18. First woman ever to skate sub 37 seconds outside of Calgary and Salt Lake City.
  19. Good time for Ter Mors! Lee and Kodaira will be faster, but maybe she can finish top 5, which would be great.
  20. Wouldn't be the first time someone falls in the team pursuit. Furthermore, skates with a 16-year old. I think the pressure will be big in the semi finals as a win would automatically mean a medal. Maybe the pressure will get to him.
  21. First Dutch athlete ever competing in skeleton at WOG and she finished in 8th place. Really nice result!
