Swimming at the Aquatics WA World Championships 2023

What will each Individual Swimming Final look like at the 2023 World Aquatic Championships? Since the psych sheets haven't come out yet, I've gathered the top 8 times of athletes from the current season that are entered in each individual event to give an idea on what each final could look like. I might do a separate post for relays later. Men's Freestyle Events: Men's Backstroke Events: Men's Breaststroke Events: Men's Butterfly Events: Men's Individual Medley Events: Women's Freestyle Events: Women's Backstroke Events: Women's Breaststroke Events: Women's Butterfly Events: Women's Individual Medley Events:5 points -

Wait, I thought that athletes with 800m and 1500m OQTs can compete in the 10k? This is what the qualification document says: "In addition to the process above, any Federation with qualified pool athletes who have achieved an Olympic Qualification Time (OQT) in either the 800-meter or 1500-meter freestyle (for both genders) may enter those athletes into the Marathon Swimming Event provided such entries will comply with Federation team limits where no more than two athletes of the same gender per Federation."2 points

the problem is that any quota place obtained in the pool doesn't count at all for the Olympic 10km race you have to earn your spot in the specific OQR for this discipline (Fukuoka and Doha, basically) in the women's 10km, however, I think there are only a few girls who already have a OQT in the pool: for sure, Katie Grimes, Anastasiia Kirpichnikova; then I'm not sure about Sharon Van Rouwendal, Leonie Beck. I think it's all. among the men, both and both swimmers and stop. I don't think the guys have a good 1500m/800m time (maybe Logan Fontaine, but it's improbable) and both our guys Paltrinieri and Acerenza this year haven't swam the OQT yet 'cause they're focusing on this race to earn the quota place (our technical director said without any problem that our target is getting all 4 quotas here in Fukuoka, without having to participate to the next world champs in Doha with the Olympians), but I'm pretty sure that they will get an OQT in the pool the first time they really swim that races seriously (and Paltrinieri is going to swim the 800m and 1500m in the pool at this world champ, so, it's just a matter of time) p.s. I'm surprised have not chosen Marc Antoine Olivier for the 10km race (but it looks it's just a disciplinary choice, rather than technical)2 points -

Latest rumors saying Russian are intending to organize their own Olympics sort of BRICS nations games and they already picked a date and venue for the games, 1 month before the Olympics in Paris and the games will be in Kazan. They apparently already also invited and some others. Yeah, all in all, once again, I really don´t mind, but hope they will do the same also in January/February 20262 points

That might be the explanation, although she already was going backwards in the 200 free way before the pandemic. Maybe she focused too much on distance and lost her speed. It looks as if she might have "rediscovered" some of her speed recently, so there might very well still be hope for her. Her progression in the 200/400/800/1500 free: 200 free: 2016: 1:57.96 2017: 1:57.10 2018: 1:57.88 2019: 1:58.14 --- 2020: 2:00.13 2021: 2:00.15 2022: 1:58.78 400 free: 2016: 4:08.10 2017: 4:05.75 2018: 4:03.57 2019: 4:01.31 --- 2020: 4:09.05 2021: 4:05.35 2022: 4:07.74 800 free: 2016: 8:34.37 2017: 8:30.62 2018: 8:22.01 2019: 8:24.25 --- 2020: 8:37.45 2021: 8:26.20 2022: 8:35.74 1500 free: 2016: 16:45.15 2017: 16:11.25 2018: 16:03.22 2019: 15:54.48 --- 2020: 16:34.43 2021: 15:59.80 2022: 16:22.89 I remember that we had a similar discussion some years ago about Mihalyvari-Farkas, where i asked whether she would keep progressing or end up like many (female) hungarian talents before her. Back then you were optimistic and didn't agree that (too) many hungarian talents fade out too quickly. Sadly it looks as if Mihalyvari-Farkas might be heading in the same direction, but maybe she will surprise us/me at worlds. Also not sure how optimistic we can/should be about the future of other talents like Veres, Fabian, Gyurinovics, Nyiradi, Molnar, Ugrai, Flück, Komoroczy, Hathazi, Abraham, Jackl and Padar? Hopefully att least Padar and Jackl will become world class. On the men's side Kovats, Magda and Betlehem look promising.2 points -

Unbelievable. Well, not really, because it's not urban and fast-paced enough, but come on. Luckily it's at least not actually called 'Marathon swimming' as far as I see in the official things, since one can't have a 10k as maximum and call it that obviously.2 points

Well, she arrived with high expectations here, probably her once in a lifetime chance to medal at "major" championship (and completely justified, after what I saw from here the whole season to today), so her tears were understandable but it is how it is, high level sport is also a matter of mental readiness and the ability to handle even the greatest pressure from the general public. This is another thing I noticed many times being the cause of failure of most of our athletes. In other hand she is still young and talented, I do believe this sorrowful experience can and will only help her in the future. I can bet my house she will never crash like that 2 hurdles from the line in the all rest of her life now1 point

I think you have an interesting definition of "top talent". Szilagyi won gold at the 2014 youth olympics as a 17 year old with 2:06.5, which was a junior world record if i remember correctly. You know who finished 1.5 seconds behind her in silver position? Zhang Yufei ... Mihalyvari-Farkas also won gold at the 2022 european championships in the 400 IM as an 18 year old. Kesely won 2 silver medals and a bronze at the 2018 european championships as a 16 year old. Gabor Zombori won gold at the 2019 junior world championships in the 400 free as a 16 year old with a time of 3:46.0. Not sure what Hosszu did as a junior that was (much) more impressive?1 point -

It was another fun hilly stage yesterday Too bad today we get a junior stage, on the national holiday no less (although that doesn't have the effect on French riders it used to have anymore anyway)....Thierry Gouvenou, be very, very ashamed of yourself We used to have stages like these in the Vuelta for years on end, until they finally realized these stages usually suck balls (which the fans had seen quickly, but somehow the organizers used blindfolds for years).1 point

Not under my original interpretation of the qualification document. It’s not very clear if the quotas are reallocated to the next best athlete or not. However, it does say unused quotas will be allocated via the HPA. The allocation created by @Josh can be seen as “safe” quotas. Those should be guaranteed without question according to the qualification document.1 point -

For Bulgarian players, there are 3 clear superstars - Kaziyski, Sokolov and now Nikolov. Kaziyski was the best player in the world for a number of years, but hasn't played for the NT for over a decade now, because he has beef with the federation. Sokolov has gotten older now and for many years all expectations were on him to bring success to the NT. But when the other players weren't at his level, even his 20+ points per game were leading to defeats. And people were getting frustrated with him, because he was playing amazing for his clubs, the MVP and so on, but things weren't working out for the NT, so they thought he was holding back, or relaxing, when in the NT. Nikolov right now is on track to being one of the biggest stars in volleyball. He has the talent to be the new Kaziyski. Atanasov for me is an above average player. His attack is very good, but his receiving and defending are abysmal. He has a good serve, but doesn't have the confidence to perform it. More often then not it leads to errors or just an easy pass over the net. There has been one final, this is the last chance push to have Kaziyski return for the Olympic qualification and play with Nikolov and Sokolov in one team. But i have learned over the years to not have my hopes up.1 point
