  1. Can’t wait for FINA to award Ireland an invite in this discipline too and then rescind it. Unlike diving and swimming, we have no participants, but it’s FINA and anything is possible

  9. 4 is the maximum actually but from what I see 76, 64 and 55 are 100% guaranteed. 59 is 2nd in line for the Pan American quota behind USA. but USA has 4 weightlifters in top 8 in other weights. so yes I think Canada is 99.99% guaranteed maximum 4 quotas .

  10. Thanks for all the info! That would be so cool to see Ireland with a weightlifter at the Olympics and if it doesn’t happen I am already pleasantly surprised we had someone in the picture at least. My bad for not giving him the respect he deserves. Good luck to him
    1 point
  11. not at the moment but his chances are not completely dead yet. slim chance though. he is 3rd in line for the European quota. actually 2nd because Russia is not going to take this one. but Albania is still ahead of him. he had to make his last attempt in the World Juniors to surpass that guy. I remember how frustrated he was when he failed. but the thing is, Albania (which is limited to 2 quotas) most probably don't want this guy. they want Qerimaj at 81 for their 2nd spot. he will qualify if Colombia is banned or someone gets hurt in 81kg ranking. just one change will be enough for Albania (and therefore for Adamus) Albania might reject 96kg quota "hoping" for 81kg later with possible reallocations. these are just possibilities but at this moment Adamus is out of the Olympics.

  12. no I didn't that's Ireland. Ireland is the best ranked NOC in that weight with no quota in another categories. I have to say I'm not sure at all about what I wrote so don't blame me if I was completely wrong the whole qualification process was mind blowing. (for example both of our Olympic Champions failed to qualify) as I said I still think India will take that quota but some Indian users told me earlier that this is guy is suspended (I can't find anything confirming that) if he is banned, there is nobody else from Asia to take the Asian quota. so the quota will be re-allocated. BUT even if India takes that one, there is another way left for Ireland, according to the rules, since Japan is qualifying maximum 4 weightlifters, there will be 4 unused host quotas. we still don't know in which weights because they have to award 3 wild cards first. in case no wild card will be awarded in this weight. Brown has a good chance to take the unused host quota.

  16. and the rest 96 == 109 == +109 == * There is no eligible weightlifter from Africa in +109kg, so the African quota will go to Hungary * I heard from Indian users here that Ajay Singh (81kg weightlifter) is suspended for doping but the fact his name is still in the list means maybe that's not correct. also the source I was given (and didn't check it properly at the time ) refers to another athlete in another sport, so I assume he is not banned. but in case he is banned, there is nobody from Asia to grab that quota. from what I can see the next best NOC with no quota in this sport is ! https://sportstar.thehindu.com/other-sports/nada-provisionally-suspends-rakhi-halder-ajay-thakur-anti-doping-rule-violations/article34283229.ece again, this information is most probably WRONG ! I highly doubt NOCs can't pick their own team.

  17. I think he is partially right. the entry standards in athletics are really hard, but the long qualification contributes to the fact so many athletes achieve it. The other part no one wants to talk about: you could do a lot of things unobserved in 2020 and has nothing to do with new shoes

  18. I still think that we will win more medals compared to Rio, but less gold medals. Right now I would predict 4 gold medals for Hungary, 2 in canoe sprint, 1 in swimming and 1 in wrestling. But I expected around 5 gold medals from both London and Rio, so what do I know.
    1 point
  19. It would be fantastic, but unlike Men, a medal from girls would be a real surprise and a result above expectation. But my whole prediction is above expectation, so why not :D ? Gold to Lőrincz Tamás in Greco-Roman 77kg, He is the current world champion and he dominated the last European Championships in April. Regarding swimming, I'll have to correct you : 2 Milák , 1 Hosszú, Silver for Kapás, Bronze for Hosszú in 200 I.M. and Razovszky in Open Waters

  20. To be fair, women's Nordic combined in 2026 wouldn't be half bad. It's great it was not added for 2022, that would have been ridiculously early, but it might be alright for 2026. There's been an international circuit of competition going on already, unlike for example women's monobob which was added before it even had a regular international competition circuit.

Can't register yet though, since the only available options (combinations of the first and second appointment) are not possible for me: either midway on a Sunday (there's F1 then), or somewhere during the Olympics (later in the day I'm sleeping, earlier I'm watching) I guess I'll wait a little so the first falls somewhere before 23 July and the second somewhere after the Olympics..

  30. not without wrestling but it has to be 3 years time between your last official competition (World and Continental Championships) before you are allowed to wrestle for another country in the Olympics. Hemida is a 2018 world U23 silver medalist for USA. normally he wouldn't be able to wrestle at the Olympics (since he wrestled for USA in November 2018) but IOC gave him special permission.

  32. not sure if you are aware but Egypt NOC asked IOC's special permission to let Hemeida wrestle for Egypt. (before his 3 years inactivity period ) I don't think they did that for nothing. but I understand he did nothing special yesterday (beside making Iranian fans happy) and they probably send the original guy. this is the same in Iran in most sports. sending the guy who won the quota. but wrestling is a different story. you can make a comedic movie from our wrestling trial process

  33. That's sad, I wonder if he knew this was possible (wouldn't be surprised if nobody really counted on this at all). But yeah, hoping for another athlete to get injured is sort of cruel, can't really say I hope someone else's Olympic dream will be shattered or something, that would be good for Kuworge but just as much of a tragedy on the other side

  36. It is possible, yes. However, only one total universality place can be now awarded per nation (as opposed to one per gender in 2016). Plus, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the universality spots will be awarded based on rankings. This should prevent nations from stacking up 100 m events (to an extent).

  41. @thepharoah do you have any idea who is going to represent Egypt in 125kg ? I assume this was Egypt's trial in this weight as well. both your guys finished 5th. so who is going ?! but I have to say most of Iranian wrestling fans thank Youssif Hemida for what he did here we sent two wrestlers here for our own trials. A) a very young talented wrestler who might even have chance for the Olympic gold and B ) a guy who is just a bad matchup for wrestler A and beat him twice recently. thankfully Hemida did great and beat Amin Taheri (wrestler B) in the QF and cleaned the way for the other guy Amir-Hossein Zare to win the gold in a dominant way and confirmed his place in Tokyo. that was one of the rare moments I had to cheer against the Iranian athlete btw it seems Chamizo really made a mess in our trials. our 74kg wrestler is not confirmed yet. Hosseinkhani won the gold but that didn't convince our "technical committee" apparently. they are considering having extra trials. (still nothing confirmed, they are just thinking) that will affect the seeding as well. Hosseinkhani will be the 4th seed if he goes to Tokyo. personally I was cheering for the other guy. pity they didn't face each other but he lost to the guy who lost to Hosseinkhani. end of discussion. Hosseinkhani is the most hated wrestler here. for the reason I explained ( so many heart breaking defeats in last 15 seconds) but he is the best we have in this weight at the moment.

Never realized that there were so many Olympic fans out there like me. Let's just pray Canada can get the spot! LVL deserves it after what she's been through. I really do not see anyone else being named to this team 4x100m medley relay: Brent Hayden (freestyle), Markus Thormeyer (backstroke), Richard Funk (breaststroke) and Joshua Liendo (butterfly). I expect Gabe Mastromatteo to be named as a relay only swimmer in this event as well. If everyone in the individual races hit at least B standard, we should see 15 male swimmers going to Tokyo. Women 50m freestyle: Kayla Sanchez (B standard) 100m freestyle: Taylor Ruck (preselected), Penny Oleksiak 200m freestyle: Penny Oleksiak (preselected), Taylor Ruck 400m freestyle: Emily Overholt 800m freestyle: Emma O'Croinin 1500m freestyle: Emma O'Croinin, Summer McIntosh 100m back: Kylie Masse (preselected), Taylor Ruck 200m back: Kylie Masse (preselected), Taylor Ruck 100m breast: Kelsey Wog, Kierra Smith 200m breast: Sydney Pickrem (preselected), Kelsey Wog 100m butterfly: Maggie Macneil (preselected), Rebecca Smith 200m butterfly: Mabel Zavaros (b standard) 200im: Sydney Pickrem (preselected), Bailey Andison 400im: Sydney Pickrem (preselected), Emily Overholt 4x100m freestyle relay: Ruck, Oleksiak, Sanchez, Macneil 4x200m freestyle relay: Oleksiak, Ruck, Mcintosh, Overholt 4x100m medley relay: No new swimmers will be added here I believe. Shapovalov, Auger-Alliasiame, Andrescu, Dabrowski and Fichman), hoping for more, but I think this is it Triathlon: 4 (2 women, 2 men, all 4 should be safe) Volleyball: 18 (men's indoor, 2 pairs in women's and 1 in men's for beach) Weightlifting: 5 (4 women and 1 man, confirmed) Wrestling: 4 (confirmed) At a minimum: 364 qualified, could be as high as 383, either number would be national record in a non-home/boycotted games, not to mention below, which with luck can bring the team size into the 400's! TBD: Men's basketball (12 athletes) If all goes well for swimming/basketball/athletics, we are looking at around 395~ athletes. Just hope it could be 400!

  48. Speaking as an , I have seen middle & distance athletics go through these WR growth spurts before. Apart from the doping records, it’s down to technical or organisational progress. Late 60s/early 70s - end of the old dirt tracks, arrival of all weather tracks. Late 70s/early 80s - professionalisation & emergence of commercial televised meets Early 90s - Emergence of professionally managed East African athletes. Now we have this new combination of super shoes & computerised pace-making, opening up WRs long thought unbeatable. And what has always happened before is that eventually someone sets a genuinely unbeatable record, after which everything will settle down for another decade or so.
