  1. Having nothing to do this evening...TISC votes send already yesterday so I´m watching some weird videos and in some nostalgia, I am rewatching the last moments of Czechoslovakian sport. 17th November 1993, Bruxelles Last round of the FIFA 1994 USA World Cup Qualification, Belgium was hosting a team of a already non-existing country a so-called team "Representation of Czechs and Slovaks" this was the name under which this team was allowed to play the 1994 WC qualifier, and if they would have won in Belgium this match they would have qualified to USA 1 and half year after the end of Czechoslovakia lol. This was the official match number 499 of Czechoslovakian Football history. one goal and the history would be rewritten by a team playing the world cup despite the country they represented did not existed. Bratislava May 1992, Ice Hockey World Championships hosted by a country which was existing for the very last year in Czechoslovakia The Most emotional match. Bronze Medal Game. Czechoslovakia - Switzerland 5-2 A last historical joint medal and a lot of tears and sadness... and + a special bonus and one of the unforgettable memorable moments of the last historic mega derby "czechoslovak el classico" Slavia Prague-Sparta Prague in the last historic Czechoslovakia Football league season played under incredible weather conditions, the highlight from 0:47

  9. Next stop, Denmark! The voting window for the nationa juries is now officially closed. After an intenste voting window for the national juries, they can now sit back and relax for some days. Those national juries who have submitted their votes in time have each received a ticket to Odense, Denmark for TOISC 2019. Unfortunately not all the jury members could make it in time for the trip. A rumour goes that the jury members, @LDOG, @KingOfTheRhinos, @titicow, @stefanbg, @Canada4thewin, @Jan Linha, @thepharoah, @Janakis, @Gianlu33, @DaniSRB, @justony and @Olympian1010 went out last night to get a few drinks at a bar. I know what you are all thinking, somehow somebody thought that @Olympian1010 was at or above the legal drinking age. They must have been drunk. The rumour says the night was pretty calm and quiet until the famous, or in this case, infamous Séamus came by. Many of the jury members were happy to see him, but as it always turns out when you're around Séamus, the drinks start to flow. Witnesses describe some wild scenes with terrible loud singing and some pretty intense discussion between some members. After some time the jury members and Séamus were kick out of the bar because many of the jury member where either too drunk or too loud. Some members went home, others continued their night out. The last the organizing committee have heard is that many of the jury members overslept which caused them to miss the flight. Usually a organizing committee would not accept such behavior, but in this case it was only rumoured that some jury members went out last night. Others have explained traffic issues were the reason for their absent at the airport today. The organizing committee has decided to give all the jury members, who missed the flight, a second chance. Tomorrow, another flight will go Denmark and the organizing committee is willling to pay the tickets for the jury members, so they can come to Denmark. The organizing committee hopes such episodes, or more specfic, rumours of such episode will not occur during the TOISC 2019 in Odense, but from former experiences something will likely happen... Lastly, the organizing host committee looks forward to welcome all jury members to Denmark when they arrive at the airport today and tomorrow.

If not, I hope there is an option for some leniency in case I can only finish it tonight (but definitely before tomorrow). I'm of course trying to have it before the deadline, so there is no problem at all

  19. So if I understand it correctly, The Arabic language is in basic the same (let say the one used in Quran) it´s the official one, peoples write, read and officially use it, but everyone speak in his own dialect, right (Maghrebin, Egyptian, Middle Orient, etc..) ?

  23. No we speak the same language which's Arabic but in different accent or way, In Maghreb countries for instance they mix Arabic words with Amazigh language and French so it's bit harder to understand them, maybe the Egyptian version of Arabic the most understandable because of Egyptian songs and movies which was widespread in Arabic region and because many Egyptians worked for years in Arabic countries

  24. The first 7 country in the olympic team pursuit ranking are well ahead of France and Belgium and are much more stronger, France actually is behind Belgium, but after this Euro they will close the gap, so it will be a battle in the next World Cup races and next World Championships to gain the 8th spot,Korea and Japan should be Dangerous too, but they have to improve their performances in the next months, it's quite easy to understand.

  27. This rendition is purely in Hindi. The variations that you are seeing in this rendition is because the singers are not only from different regions of India but also belong to different genres of music. It is this diversity which brings the flavour in this rendition which is very popular and is thus the de-facto the unofficial version of the anthem. The rendition that may have been performed at 2010 CWG games ceremony must have been the official version of the anthem. Personally, I prefer the official version with proper protocol for official functions and this version (along with various beautiful versions of Vande Matram) for unofficial programs. Also, though our anthem is officially in Hindi, the language used is such that one can easily claim that it is in Bengali or Sanskrit as well. If you liked this rendition, you should also check the following video, where a number of artistes sing the same line in different Indian languages and styles.

  33. We have quite a lot Arabic vocabularies which was spread from Muslim merchants about 700 years ago. Even some country names in Indonesian used Arabic derived ones because those merchants are the ones which made people at that time aware of those countries like Mesir, Aljazair, Yunani, etc. With the exception of Morocco, somehow we used the Western derived "Maroko". In Malaysia they still use Maghribi (and the number of Arabic vocabularies in Malay is even more prevalent than in Indonesian).

  34. I can say there are only 2 countries in the world we understand their languages , Afghanistan and Tajikistan. but well that's still Persian of course with some differences . but we also have many different languages in Iran, but I think in past 80 years (or something like that) the government forced everybody to learn Persian at school as the official language. but I think for half of the population (or maybe 30%) Persian is not their mother language. if someone travels to the west of the country, no chance you hear people speak Persian in the streets, it's either Kurdish, Azeri or Arabic. (depends on the region) we also have Turkmeni , Balochi and few more derivation of Persian in North and East of the country but it's only Persian in middle of the country (Tehran and nearby provinces)

  36. I can say I understand the basic Arabic (probably more than just the basics) but that doesn't apply to everybody here. yes everybody has to learn some Arabic (in a very low level) at school but then almost everybody forgets it right after the school. (I was a good student and still remember everything and probably even learned more) if you turn your TV in Iran and switch channels, 100% sure you will find at least 1-2 channels showing something in Arabic but it doesn't mean people understand it most of religious people just listen to Quran without understanding a word. but beside that, we have Arabic speaking Iranians, I think for 2 million people Arabic is their first language and Persian comes second.

  38. For Arabic I think being the language of Quran holly book for Muslims' made much non Arab speakers know basics of Arabic language, so people from Iran, Pakistan, many African countries especially chad has good base in Arabic language, also Turkish people, maybe Indonesians and Malaysians especially those who study here in AL Azhar university, Israel so I think Arabic is somehow spread language , ofc like every other language it varies from country to another, Egyptians don't speak like Maghreb countries or people in Sham areas ( Palestine, Syria and Lebanon) and gulf countries, etc each ethnic groups has different way of expressing language but at the end of the day we understand each other

  39. Talking on my own experience, when I travelled to South America some years ago, I was quite surprised in most countries people spoke or understood Brazilian portuguese to some degree, even those who used "portuñol" and apologized in advance to Brazilian travellers. What I also noticed, and I may be wrong, is that it was easier for portuguese speakers to understand the several forms of Spanish used in SA, and even my Mexican Spanish, than for us to fully understand them, but probably because they spoke too fast for my untrained ears. From a general perspective I agree with @LDOG; I'I've studied French and Italian a decade ago, and though not to a pro level, I still manage to convey my thoughts rather respectably, even if sometimes I get confused regarding the correct name of the verbs in each one, especially those that greatly differ from Spanish, and probably through familiarity and personal point of view, I'd rank Italian the closer to Spanish, then Portuguese, French and Romanian, among "national" romance languages. Quite close to the actual truth. Slang in each Spanish speaking country is very different, and in the countries with the largest populations ( ), each region has their own especific slang which will sound unintelligible in other regions. Just a general suggestion: don't ever use the verb "coger" (to take) in México as it is slang for "to f**k". Also "concha" in Mexico means seashell and at the same time is the name of onf of the most traditional pastries, and "mamado" is most commonly used to refer to a man with big muscles.

  41. I missed all the thread but, to answer the original question of hckosice, in the case of spanish it's very easy to understand portuguese. Like, I read something in portuguese and I understand 95% of it easily, only slang or words with a very different root is the only thing I can misunderstand. And I never studied portuguese formaly. Then there is also familiarity to other latin languages, but not to the same level as portuguese. I would say for a spanish speaker the order from easiest to hardest is portuguese, italian, french and the hardest would be romanian.

    [OFF TOPIC] Language Thread

I saw it a few months after the video was published and it's very funny and completely true. Depending on the country or even the region, the same word could have very different meanings. In fact I know some real cases of funny situations. In Spain "Concha" is a shell and also a women's name, but in some American countries is a word for pussy. So imagine the face of the hotel receptionist when a friend told him her name!

  46. The Il Piccolo Lombardia race was terrible for the young Dutchman. 19-year-old Development Team Sunweb cyclist at the exit from Madonna del Ghisallo collided with a car that unexpectedly entered the route of the ongoing race. He suffered many fractures, but his life is not in danger. Today, the Sunweb team gave further information at the request of the cyclist's family. Unfortunately they are not good. Maas has a broken spine and is paralyzed. The young Dutchman has no feeling in their legs and unfortunately it is unlikely to change.
