Every country would have the same issue.

Not really, some countries have less some more cases, some countries are already vaccinating, others not. Not sure if every country would've taken the same decision of cancelling 6 months in advance (assuming that what the article says is true, of course).

The key thing will be how Japan reports it in the coming days- do they announce it or deny it or ignore the reports.

Should have postponed to 2022 and then tried to get 2024 to move to 2026 and 2028 to 2030.

The Winter Olympics: Are we a joke?

At this point I think the IOC should seriously consider holding every discipline in a different region of the world for 2021 (or 2022) and make these "virtual" Olympics. They get their money from the TV contracts anyway, as long as they can put a product on TV it doesn't particularly matter where it's from.

Suspect most if not all would be the same especially with the vaccine busting mutant.

i found this, adding to my skepticism of the report from the times

However i dont get why it would be an issue, yes fans cant attend, i think that needs to be said already, however the athletes cant quarantine? have testing protocols? Euro's are still on as far as i know, nfl went on without a hitch, the soccer leagues are going on fine. Off course we are talking about way more athletes but they can make it work for at least have the games, without fans.

Right, but the Japanese government would take a big hit from that, and while that might not directly affect any future bidders, the effects of such a decision would haunt the bidding process for years to come I feel. If there’s no certainty that your city’s/country’s investment in the Games will yield results, why would you be lining up to host the Games at such a great cost?

I don’t think what your suggesting is a bad idea, but I think Japan counted too much on getting money from spectators and tourists. As whole, the international sports community has under valued the modern capabilities of television/streaming production, as well as, the doors those technological advancements open up.

It would have to be contingent on Japan agreeing (and potentially guaranteeing them 2032).

    • meanwhile the 2 next best Baseball Leagues in the World have also reached the Final Series   in , the 2024 Japan Series will feature the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks (back to business after the awful 2023 season), winner of the Pacific League, and the surprising Yokohama DeNA Bay Stars, winners of the Central League after an amazing series against the heavily favoured Tokyo Giants   the Japan Series (best-of-7 games, 2-3-2 format) will start next Saturday, October 26th in Yokohama @ 6.30 p.m. local time     in  South Korea, instead, the 2024 Korean Series will see the KIA Tigers from Gwangju facing the Samsung Lions from Daegu   the series is a best-of-7 matchup, but with an unusual 2-2-3 format, with the best seeded teams (KIA in this case) hosting not only 4, but 5 of the potential 7 games    game #1 was scheduled for earlier, Today, but it was suspended in the top of the 6th inning (Samsung leading 1-0, runners on 1st & 2nd, 0 out) due to heavy rain   it should resume Tomorrow @ 4 p.m. local time (before game #2 @ 6.30 p.m. local time), but the weather forecast is awful also for Tomorrow and there's a good chance that there won't be any ball played all day long

    • It`s all the more strange that Italy qualified two womens for Paris, even though this discipline has been in a great crisis in our country for many years - since we stopped naturalizing Chinese some 20 years ago.

    • 2 medals is the historic success of Table Tennis.     Barbora Balážová Gold and Tatiana Kukuľková bronze in W Doubles.   Funny (or not so-funny) enough... both missed Paris 2024 by a few... Balážová ended first non-qualified and Kukuľková 4th under the line... Still can not believe we failed to qualify at least one female to the Games, despite our womens team was still in qualifying position one year before Paris as 2022 WCh quarterfinalists ...   All this Olympic qualification really sucked... especially for us

    • I expected Vonn to return in a speed event, but guess she wants to test herself first on a slower GS. Though at 40 i think she won't be doing many GSs and concentrate on the DH & SG. And hopefully she does that, because a full World Cup season should be out of her aim.   As for Hirscher, he must really be scared of Odermatt breaking his records
    • Awards time!  Here's the World Athletics nominations for Track Runner of the year.    Nominees announced for Track Athlete of the Year 2024 | World Athletics   And for Field Event athlete of the year, although both of these choices are pretty bloody obvious.  High demand for yellow and blue flowers, put it that way.     Nominees announced for Field Athlete of the Year 2024 | World Athletics
