  3. Season's last parallel giant slalom interrupted Too much fog to race in Erciyes-Kayseri The World Cup season's final PGS race staged in Erciyes-Kayseri (TUR) has been interrupted due to heavy fog after the visibility got too poor to guarantee a safe and fair competition. Following an unanimous jury decision, the race will resume tomorrow at 8 AM CET with the quarter finals of both, women and men.
  4. Hirscher wins it all and writes history The 56th edition of the Pokal Vitranc kicked off today with the traditional Audi FIS Ski World Cup Giant Slalom on the Podkoren 3. On this last regular race before the Finals in Aspen, Marcel Hirscher was unbeatable and took everything that was on the table for him: he secured both the Overall and the Giant Slalom globe and claimed the GS win. Before heading to Kranjska Gora, only two athletes had a shot at the Giant Slalom globe: Marcel Hirscher was leading 96 points ahead of Alexis Pinturault. The Frenchman, who already had a bad serie at the World Championships, struggled to find the rhythm and skied out in the first run. The path was cleared for Marcel Hirscher, but the Austrian didn’t gamble and earned a sizable margin of almost a second (+0.96) in the first run, over Henrik Kristoffersen (2nd +0.96) and Justin Murisier (3rd +1.10). But in the second run, the cards were redistributed and the behind Hirscher, two Scandinavians managed to land on the podium. In third place, Matts Olsson scores his second career podium in giant slalom, only a few weeks after his second place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Since he came back from a severe knee injury last season, Olsson is fired up and keeps beat his own personal records, what allows him to claim the 8th place of the current giant slalom standings. "The end result is great for me but it was a really tough race with the weather, with the snow, with everything pretty much but in the end it was great. It was raining quite a lot in the second run. With rain and poor visibility, the snow and the bumps, everything together gets real difficult. You know that the second run will not be a good feeling and you just have to fight." Leif Kristian Haugen has been on the World Cup Tour for eight years already, but this season something triggered and he impressed with very strong performances in his favourite discipline, but also in slalom and in the parallel events, where he claimed two 4th places, his best results before today. At the World Championship, the Norwegian was able to prove his great shape also in Giant Slalom, by claiming the bronze medal. So it was the logical continuation for him to earn his first World Cup podium with this second place in Kranjska Gora. "I feel obviously great. It's a career-best result and it was a rough race; I didn't get the worst light, but I didn't get the best either. I knew I had to fight hard and just not really think too much about the conditions. I think right now I'm skiing really well and I know that when I push hard, I ski my best. We've had these conditions before in the summer in Norway on the glaciers where you can't see more than a couple of meters ahead of you and it's raining so I think it's bringing back some of the stuff I've done when I was little." The two Scandinavians were honoured to share the podium with the athlete who just became the most successful skier of all time: Marcel Hirscher. The Austrian did not only manage to hold on to the lead in the second run to take his 44th World Cup win, but he also secured the Giant Slalom globe (196 points ahead of next contender Alexis Pinturault with one race to go) and the Overall globe (504 poitns ahead of next contender Kjetil Jansrud with 5 races to go). It’s the first time in the history of alpine skiing, that an athletes claims the Overall six times in a row. "If I'm telling the truth, maybe it is a little too much for me right now. It's very emotional and I'm trying right now to do a very professional job but I'm really, really thankful. I would like to just have three hours to myself after the ceremony to just think about what brought me to this point. It's just amazing to have six consecutive overall World Cup titles. It is a record where I have to say 'thank you' to many, many people, especially to my girlfriend, Laura, to my family, and the team around me. They were amazing." Tomorrow, a slalom will be held in Kranjska Gora, with the first run starting at 09.30 CET and the second one at 12.30 CET. Full Results Here Marcel Hirscher 1st Run 2nd Run

  7. Sofia Goggia takes career first win at Jeongseon downhill After securing nine World Cup podium results and a World Championships bronze medal this winter, Italian Sofia Goggia secured her career first victory at Jeongseon, South Korea, at the test event downhill for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games. The race began after a short delay due to the first forerunner crashing, but then action was underway as Lindsey Vonn pushed out of the gate with bib 1. The American had some early bobbles in the upper terrain, but she skied a fast enough run to hold the early lead. Only Goggia was able to best her by a narrow 0.07 seconds. Ilka Stuhec ultimately rounded out the podium in third, 0.23 seconds off the winning pace. “It was not [hard to win] because I just skied for myself today. I just tried to enjoy the slope, to push as hard as I could where I could, and to use a little bit more tactics when required because in the training runs, I missed a gate. So I really tried to focus on myself and this paid off," said Goggia. "It feels good, but I still have to realize it. I think that when I’m going on the podium, there at the prize giving ceremony, I’m going to realize it. But still not now.” "I thought [my run] was good. Definitely made some mistakes. The top, just kind of got rocked by the bumps and then on the bottom, just got a little bit low in my line and lost some speed. The girls made up a couple tenths on me on the very bottom, so it’s nice to know that my skiing is getting better and I finally feel like I’m on an upward pace. It’s been a struggle this year. But before Whistler [Olympics], in the test events, I was second as well, so I think it’s a good position to be in and it’s a great track, so I’m excited," said Vonn. "Right away, even after the first inspection, I knew that it was going to be a good track for me, and I think there’s also something to be said for not winning the test events. Sometimes that can be quite a bit of extra pressure added on unnecessarily. I think I have enough of that, so I don’t really need any more. I know where I can make up the time, and I think it definitely bodes well for next year." With Goggia's victory, Stuhec was blocked from claiming the downhill title prior to the final race of the season. She was three points shy of securing the small globe without carrying the fight on to Aspen. "A few turns were not that clean, I guess, because I knew I had to keep the higher line than I had in trainings. So I guess I lost some speed there, which was I lost some time again. But it’s a lesson learned, and I’ll keep that in mind when we get back here," said Stuhec. "I’m still really happy for Sofia. She really has a great season as well, and she’s skiing really good. But we have one more race. A lot is still open, but it’s skiing.” Jasmine Flury and Tamara Tippler, starting bibs 21 and 22, experienced an extremely rare timing glitch that was resolved according to the international ski competition rules. Tippler finished fifth and Flury seventh. A long hold ensued while the problem was identified, and then the race was able to resume. The ladies race a super-G at Jeongseon on Sunday. 9. Atkin and Harle on top in World Cup season's grand finale Isabel Atkin (GBR) and Teal Harle (CAN) have claimed victories at the 2016/17 slopestyle World Cup finals staged at Silvaplana's Corvatsch Park in Switzerland. As well, the season’s crystal globes ware handed out to overall slopestyle World Cup champions Sarah Hoefflin (SUI) and McRae Williams (USA). With the top 8 ladies and top 16 men selected in yesterday's qualifications including some of the biggest names in the sport, the anticipation was high ahead of today's competition. The innovative course, crystal globes up for grabs, and world's best freeskiers all on hand in Corvatsch, everything was set for another exciting show. Atkins claims her first World Cup win In the ladies' competition 18 years old Isabel Atkin of Great Britain stepped it up big time in the finals taking her first ever World Cup victory. Atkin scored 88.40 points for her first run that included a switch lipslide, wall ride, left 720 safety, a switch dub 12 and a switch left 720 mute as she took an early lead that she would keep for the rest of the day. Isabel was delighted with her win and said she put everything into the run following all her hard training this season. Emma Dahlstrom (SWE) grabbed the second place today with 86.00 points for her second run. It was also the fourth podium finish for the Swedish freeskier this season, with her highlight performance being a top spot in big air World Cup in El Colorado (CHI). Representing the host nation was Mathilde Gremaud, doing the Swiss proud and rounding out ladies' podium on third with a score of 80.20 points. Harle on top in men's competition Similarly to Atkin, also Canada's Teal Harle wrapped up the season's finals in Corvatsch in great fashion with a career-best result. Harle was on fire today, stomping perfectly both of his runs and with the high score of 92.80 managed to finish on top of the field. His run included 270’s in and out of the rails, left dub 900 safety, a switch dub 12 mute and stylish left corked 900 hand drag over the final feature. Notably, he landed his signature trick, the intricacies of which are his secret. “It’s like a double cork 10 but then you block it and land at 900 instead of 1080, so you skip the last 180. I believe it’s the first time that the trick is done in a contest run. It’s a little something that I have that is kind of unique!” said Harle. With the World Championships just around the corner, the win comes at good time for Harle, and the Canadian hopes for another good results in a couple of days in Sierra Nevada. “This gives me a lot of confidence going into Worlds. Now I know I can land my run so hopefully I can keep the momentum going,” Harle added. Harle is having a break-out season on the World Cup tour and after some promising results earlier this year with fourth and fifth place finish in Italy and Canada, he has finally made it into the podium. The US duo of McRae Williams and Gus Kenworthy took second and third respectively with 90.20 and 88.20 points. It was second podium finish on tour for both of them, with McRae also taking the win in Font Romeu, while Kenworthy placed second in the halfpipe World Cup in Mammoth. Hoefflin and Williams awarded with the crystal globes In the overall slopestyle ranking it was Sarah Hoefflin (SUI) and McRae Williams (USA) who showed the most consistent form throughout the season and ended up with the crystal globes in their hands. Hoefflin who had a 19 point advantage over Johanne Killi (NOR) before the competition in Switzerland, managed to stay on top of the ranking despite missing today's finals, placing the pressure on Killi to make top 5 in order to close the gap for the overall lead. The Norwegian rider gave it all right from the start throwing down big tricks one after another. However, at the end of a run that looked like it could have easily placed her on podium today, she ended up with big crash after going massive on the third kicker. Though she fought through the pain and managed to land her second run, the score of 72.20 points was only enough for sixth place on the day. Thus Killi had to settle for the second place in the overall ranking, falling short to Hoefflin by only one point. Colline Ballet-Baz (FRA) finished the season in third. As for the men, McRae Williams managed to edge out all the competitors with his second-place finish and took over the ranking with 180 points. Last year's slopestyle World Cup winner Andri Ragettli (SUI), who certainly wanted to repeat his success this year, couldn't quite stomp his superb run from yesterday's qualifications again in the finals. Finishing on sixth today Ragettli wasn't able to keep his advantage and wrapped up the season on second with 172 points. The last podium stop ended up in hands of Colin Wili, also representing Switzerland. With the World Championships just a couple of days away, the athletes will now slowly travel to Spain, with the slopestyle competition scheduled to take place March 17-19. 10. FIS NORDIC SKIING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Men's Team Sprint Large Hill Non-Olympic Event Final Results Germany FRENZEL Eric RYDZEK Johannes 28:45.8 Norway MOAN Magnus Hovdal KROG Magnus 28:46.8 Japan WATABE Yoshito WATABE Akito 28:56.0 Frenzel/Rydzek complete German gold medal sweep in Lahti The duo of Eric Frenzel and Johannes Rydzek proved to be unbeatable again - completing the gold medal sweep of the German Nordic Combined team in Lahti. But this competition was won in an intense fight. In the end, it was one second that separated Rydzek and gold from Norway’s Magnus Krog and silver. Akito and Yoshito Watabe took the bronze medal for Japan, +10.2 seconds behind the winners. Francois Braud and Maxime Laheurte shone in the jumping part of the event. Both delighted the crowd with jumps of 125 metres and a point total of 264.2 points had the Frenchmen leaving the start line 16 seconds ahead of the German team. Frenzel/Rydzek accumulated 256.1 points after two jumps of 125.5 and 122 metres. The brother pair Watabe put Team Japan on the third position after the jumping event. Two times 123 metres brought them 255.4 points and a time disadvantage of 18 seconds on Braud/Laheurte. Also still in the contention was Team Norway with 24 seconds to make up after Magnus Krog and Magnus Moan jumped 126.5 and 119.5 metres respectively. Bernhard Gruber and Willi Denifl followed 4 seconds later and were also still on course for a medal at the start of the race. The local heroes from Finland, Eero Hirvonen and Ilkka Herola, had two slightly weaker jumps and started 48 seconds behind the leaders from France. Team Slovenia had a solid performance on the jumping hill with youngster Vid Vrovhnik holding up well under the pressure and Marjan Jelenko showing part of his jumping strength with 121.5 metres. The had to make up a time disadvantage of one minute and four seconds. Even a crime writer could not have come up with a storyline with more tension and excitement than what the cross-country part of the race provided. The gaps between the first five teams were eliminated quickly into the race and from then on a true “formula one” feeling took over. With constant action in the stadium and fast interchanged between the athletes, the spectators were entertained at best. Germany, Norway, Japan, France and Austria stayed together in the leading group, even with Akito Watabe falling closely before an exchange at the halfway point of the race. Willi Denifl hat lost contact to the top four on one of his laps but with the athletes in front playing tactical games, his teammate Berni Gruber was able to close the gap again. Ultimately, however, the Austrians, Frenchmen and Japanese were left behind again when Eric Frenzel and Magnus Moan attacked on the last uphill on their last lap. Exchanging to Johannes Rydzek and Magnus Krog, the hunt for the medals was truly on on the last lap. In a nailbiter of a finish line sprint, which was made even more difficult by Russian athlete Samir Mastiev who was just overlapped in an inconvenient position before the finish strait, Rydzek got the inner lane and stormed to his fourth consecutive gold at Lahti 2017. Magnus Krog and Magnus Moan had to be satisfied with silver, while Akito and Yoshito Watabe won the first-ever Japanese Team Sprint medal at World Championships. Austria claimed rank four, France finished on the sixth place, Italy was seventh and the Finnish team ended their home World Championships on place eight. The fastest team on the track was team Norway who needed 28:38.8. for the 2x 7.5 km, the fastest individual skier was Magnus Moan (13:53.0). Russia took silver and Sweden battled back from 7th place after the second exchange to take the bronze. Sweden's Marcus Hellner recorded the fastest third leg and brought the team into medal contention. Sweden had Calle Halfvarsson as the anchor and amongst the 4 team fight for the final podium position, he was the best finisher. The games began early between Halfvarsson, Finland's Heikkinen, Germany's Boegl and Switzerland's Perl with no one wanting to lift the pace to early to thin the group down. Sweden, Finland and Switzerland entered the final curve together with Halfvarsson leading the group. A fall by Heikkinen on the final curve took Finland out of the bronze medal battle. Switzerland's Perl kept Halfvarsson honest all the way to the line arriving just 0.2 seconds behind in 4th. Heikkinen recovered in time from his fall to bring Finland across for 5th just ahead of Germany in 6th. 18. So, It was really a very long period since Slovaia had 3 athletes on points in the womens biathlon. Today was a Very nice day for us. Especially great efforts by both Fialková sisters. Paulína once again showed that she can in a perfect day fight against the best in the world. today she had 10th best skiing times !!! which helped her despite 2 penalty loops to finish in top 15. But the moment of the day was her sister Ivona, incredible long waiting for her very first points in world cup came finally to the end today, with only 1 miss in the standing shooting and very good skiing (17th fastest of the day) in general fantastic skiing of our girls today . she ended together with her more famous sister in the top 20. Also Jana Gereková finishing her season here in PyeongChang this weekend, tried to finally earn her best seasons result, and she was very close, todays 27th place is her second best result this season. same as for her team mates, pitty for this 1 penalty, otherwise it would be 3rd top 20 today. Terézia Poliaková was again slow, as all current season, unfortunately she had also a very bad shooting resulting in 80th place, far from the points. In overall, today was a crazy day for our womens biathlon, even without Nastya we achieved by far our best race in a couple of last seasons since Kuzmina wins in World cup finals in Oslo 3 years ago. We collected absolutely crazy 365 points for the Nations cup today !!!!!! what apitty our 17th place looks fixed, we are 137 points behind 16th USA, but at least our 5 olympic quotas looks now pretty well assured, since we have currently a very confortable 1111 points advantage over 21st place of Slovenia. in the 4 starters next seasons world cup battle we gained today also a very nice amount, now we are 547 points ahead of 18th Japan. So once again very well done babes ! congrats ! great race !
