  1. Something that does really standout about Honeyland is the use of subjects to interview other subjects.
  2. I was always the same. I’d run a 5km practice with the varsity track team, and then go talk about films with the drama club. I got rather lucky in high school. I was viewed as the guy you asked for help to do your homework, but was not viewed as a “nerd/dork” at the same time.
  3. Somehow, Honeyland has made the Balkans even more confusing for me
  4. Same, I read this as “LDOG surfs 4chan”. Interesting.
  5. This (Turkish?) grandmother should really consider communications. She would make a killing just talking about her experiences
  6. I already have enough Totallympians upset with me the way it is
  7. Yeah that’s the biggest loophole with US citizenship. If I really wanted to, I could train for cross country skiing the next four years, and then announce my intention to compete for USVI having never stepped foot in the territory once.
  8. Why did 1917 strike some many people as the Best Picture this year? It fell rather flat for me, and didn’t have a strong story. I didn’t leave the theater feeling like that was the best film of the year.
  9. Brazil is full idiots too. This documentary at least makes me feel a bit better about our democracy, ask me again in November though.
  10. Watching Edge of Democracy is painful. I’m watching the last three years of my life play out in front of my eyes, but in a different country. The similarity is that democracy failed both countries. The upper class wins in both cases The difference is that Brazil had a false impeachment, and the US missed a true impeachment.
  11. About 30 minutes into Edge of Democracy, and I already recognized a song used in the 2012 Handover Ceremony. No spoilers, but I’ve just found @hckosice a new favorite question for next weeks quiz.
  12. Trying to cram . Once a bad student, always a bad student. Just finished Marriage Story. It’s rather good. I found it more enjoyable than some of the other nominees. The only awards it deserves are Best Actor/Best Actress in my opinion. On to Edge of Democracy, then American Factory, Honeyland, Parasite, and the Doc Shorts.
  13. Might be the most insensitive thing and xenophobic thing I’ve read on Totallympics in a while, and I’ve read many of bestmen’s posts. While I agree that her choice in faith doesn’t give her special leeway to dictate the Olympic schedule, we also shouldn’t attack her for what she believes. I 100% disagree with Orthodox Jews on most things, but I also am tolerant of their ways.
  14. A fair point I’ll give you that, but the US has never treated Puerto Rico as equal. There are actually specific clauses in US law that make it abundantly clear that Puerto Rico is a US-occupied territory at best. Most Americans actually believe that Peugeot Rico is a foreign country. They speak a different language, have a different culture, and send a different Olympics team. They got grandfathered in after the current IOC national Olympic committee guidelines. No other NOCs really seem to complain about Puerto Rico being allowed to participate either, so for now, it’s a non-issue.
  15. Personal Rankings for Best Score: 1. “Defeated Clown” - Joker 2. “End of Story” - Marriage Story 3. “Come Back To Us” 1917 4. “Plumfield” - Little Women 5. “Rise of The Skywalker” - Star Wars 9
  16. I hate every song save Latvia and Albania. Modern Eurovision seems more and more like a celebration of the world’s worst music. I say TISC has much better songs low key.
  17. So Sinn Fein is like the nationalist party right? I don’t know much about Irish politics, so I’d love explanation of what’s going on here. Plus, the whole damn country decided to use Gaelic for anything official, which makes it a pain in the ass to understand the process.
  18. As much as I too love to “unusual” teams make the Olympics, this is on Puerto Rico. They needed to play better today. Brazil is the better team by most measures anyway. It sucks for Puerto Rico, but system still seems rather “fair” here (I would agree that I’d prefer a playoff game to points difference).
  19. On behalf of the US Women’s National Basketball Team, I formally apologize to the country of Mozambique for the unwanted slaughter they just received.
  20. Well technically it is. I admit that India is very much a mysterious land to me, but I know the naming culture is different there. Those are there real names most likely.
  21. Sport transcends faith (and unfortunately for her). I would be interesting to someone from that community at the highest stages though.
  22. Qualification news seems to be slowly trickling out nowadays. I’d say it’s officially qualification season for the World Games. Just came across the Wakeboard qualification system today: https://iwwf.sport/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/2021-World-Games-Wakeboard-Selection-160120.pdf We actually already know the quotas. The sole qualification criteria was the 2019 IWWF World Wakeboard Championships Team Overall Classification. The difficulty here is how athletes are nominated. The IWWF has made a list of athletes they deem to be eligible for the 2021 World Games, and have assigned countries a max amount of quotas. Here’s a quick round up: 3 Quotas (must send 1 male and 1 female + additional entry of choice): 2 Quotas (must send 1 male and 1 female): 1 Quota (can chose either an eligible male or female): First In Line For Reallocation: Additionally, there are 2 Wild Card quotas left to be assigned by the IWWF. Being that every continent except for Africa is qualified, we can assume one will go there, and most likely too . The leading contenders for the other wild card (in my opinion) are:
  23. I will say, as “crazy” or as convoluted as this qualification system was, it has worked out to where most of the top teams qualify. (Or at least are in a place to be reasonably able to)
