  1. Crosscountry skiing: I enjoyed it. It was great to see lots of different nations in the top ten (I think the top 8 came from 7 different countries) and although Stadlober faded away a bit at the end I was also happy with the result, especially the gold medal.

Luge: The difficult track causes really good racing. I'm usually not a big fan of this sport since I have the feeling the guys who are predicted to perform well never ever make mistakes but this time it's a bit different. Also an Austrian is currently 2nd so we might get a medal despite Kindl not performing well.

Biathlon: Meh. The battle for the 1st place was never really close and since the women who potentially could have challenged Dahlmeier all messed up their last shooting they never even got close to the medal positions which is why there was basically never any excitement outside the shooting range.

Ski jumping: I've already written this in the ski jumping thread, I missed the final because I recorded the event but due to the delays my recording ended before the last athletes came down.

Besides, I'm also not very happy with the result. I can't imagine how bad this must feel for polish ski jumping fans, and as an Austrian I of course also cannot be happy about a German winning a gold medal, especially because they already had one.

The shorttrack final was enjoyable to watch but for someone like me who doesn't care that much for this sport nothing special and I missed the speed skating. So all in all mediocre day. Hoping for the first Austrian medals tomorrow.

  2. I recorded the event and wanted to watch it later today, but due to the many delays I missed the final

Also after Wellinger completely bigheadedly called himself the man to beat after the trainings I just thought, please ski jumping gods, anyone but him. I guess the result shows he was right but I just hate it when an athlete calls himself the favorite especially when it's not objectively true.

Should be an easy win for you, you will 100% win both races on the women's side and on the german side Neureuther and Luitz are missing and Dopfer is out of shape. Strasser should win his duel, but the other german man will have a 50% chance at best to win and even if that happens, Vlhova should be clearly ahead of her german counterpart, so Slovakia should advance based on time anyway.

Where did you find the draw/how do you know that you will probably have to compete against Germany in the opening round?

Don't know if it will be as easy as you think. Geiger and whoever almost beat holdener in the first round (I think it was Dürr) were looking quite good. Zuzulova might not be back at her best yet, so the only run Slovakia will almost certainly win is Vlhova's.

At that point, ANY european bid should win versus ANY other bid.

To Canada to host the Winter Games 16 years afer Vancouver is ridiuclous. I really hope It won't happen (and if it means Sapporo, so be it)

No, I'd rather take Canada again than another winter olympics in Asia. Now before Pyeong Chang has started saying you don't have a problem with Olympics in Asia is easy but I bet after China 2022 you'll be sick of standing up at 3 in the morning to watch olympic winter games.

I hope Sweden will host it

Sweden would be cool on paper but again I'm not too happy about the exact locations of the events. As far as I know they would make the Nordic events in Fallun, alpine skiing events in Are and all sorts of ice skating events in Stockholm. That's logical since those are existing facilities but the distances between these places make the already big distances in Switzerland and Austria look tiny.

What really surprises me is that Germany seemingly doesn't care about the Winter Olympics anymore. Munich made a bid for 2018 as far as I remember, and that actually was a really good one, since they really have almost everything that's needed for Olympic games in Bavaria. (Nordic events in Oberstdorf, alpine skiing in Garmisch, luge in Königssee, speed skating in Inzell, Biathlon in Ruhpolding and there is an exsting olympic park in Munich with many arenas where other events could take place) I think there was the idea of making Olympic winter games in Saxony, but although they do have a few facilities there (Altenberg, Klingenthal) I don't think that plan was ever very close to becoming real.

Guys, Question, are the courses, existing courses in the resort, or are they setting a special course? i never ski'd before, even though i always wanted to try (hopefully will one day) but if let's say i come to St. Moritz, or Cortina, can i ski on the downhill course, or it doesnt really exist outside the world cup competition days

I only signed in on this forum yesterday but read the last few pages of this thread and saw this post. Generally you can ski on almost any slope used for world cup events. I myself have already skied the WC slopes in Hinterstoder and Schladming. There are a few examples like Kitzbühel though, where some sections of the WC slope are so extreme that they are no official slopes of the ski resort. That said, if you want to you can try your luck on these slopes too.

Man, this is so sad. Only a few days away from her first olympic race with a chance to maybe even win a medal and then this happens.

Another alpine skier unfortunately missing the events is edit miklos. I don't know if you can call her a top athlete but it's just sad that a rather small winter olympic country like hungary loses its only skier with top ten potential and even a small chance to win a medal.

  7. I guess I'm a bit late to the party but here is what my perfect Olympic program would look like:

    Alpine Skiing [11]

    • Slalom (m/w)
    • Giant Slalom (m/w)
    • Super-G (m/w)
    • Downhill (m/w)
    • Combined (m/w)
    • Team Event (mixed)

I would change the Team Event to its old format where you had a Super-G run first and then a Slalom run. Of every nation you had one man/woman who skied the Super-G, one who skied the Slalom and one who had to ski both. So both teams needed good male and female athletes and they needed speed skiers, slalom skiers and allrounders. It wasn't that exciting to watch but currently one team only needs one good male slalom skier and one good female slalom skier and they can win gold. That's ridiculously unfair.

    Biathlon [11]

    • Sprint (m/w)
    • Pursuit (m/w)
    • Individual (m/w)
    • Mass Start (m/w)
    • Team Relay (m/w/mixed)
    • single mixed relay

I like the inclusion of a mixed event but 3 relays are too much. Therefore I'd prefer to see a single mixed relay to have a different kind of race while still including a mixed event

    Bobsleigh [4]

    • Two-man/woman (m/w)
    • Four-man (m/w)

    +1

    Cross-Country Skiing [12]

    • 15/10km Freestyle (m/w)
    • 30/15km Skiathlon (m/w)
    • 50/30km Classical (m/w)
    • 4x10/5km Relay (m/w)
    • Individual Sprint (m/w)
    • Team Sprint (m/w)

    Curling [2]

    • Tournament (m/w)
    • Mixed Doubles (mixed)

    -1

    Figure Skating [5]

    • Singles (m/w)
    • Pairs (mixed)
    • Ice Dancing (mixed)
    • Team Event (mixed)

    Freestyle Skiing [10]

    • Aerials (m/w)
    • Moguls (m/w)
    • Halfpipe (m/w)
    • Slopestyle (m/w)
    • Ski Cross (m/w)

    Ice Hockey [2]

    • Tournament (m/w)

    Luge [4]

    • Singles (m/w)
    • Doubles (open)
    • Team Relay (mixed)

    Nordic Combined [5]

    • Individual Normal Hill/7.5km (m) (one jump)
    • Sprint Normal Hill/7.5km (w)
    • Mass start Normal Hill/10km (m) (two jumps)
    • Individual Large Hill/15km (m) (two jumps)
    • Team Large Hill/4x5km Relay (m)

I think it's time for a women's Nordic combined event. The competition probably wouldn't be great but I don't like that women are still completely excluded from a sport.

The rest is a combination of old Nordic Combined disciplines. I don't like that the Normal and large hill events are almost identical so I want the return of the old format of a sprint (with one jump) and an individual race (with two jumps). Moreover I'd like to see the return of mass start events. They were usually not as exciting as the other races but it was the only discipline where it's worth watching both the ski jumping and the cross country skiing part, and again I simply like variety.

    Short Track Speed Skating [8]

    • 500m (m/w)
    • 1000m (m/w)
    • 1500m (m/w)
    • 5000m/3000m Relay (m/w)

    Skeleton [2]

    • Singles (m/w)

    Ski Jumping [5]

    • Normal Hill (m/w)
    • Mixed Team Normal Hill
    • Large Hill (m)
    • Large Hill Team (m)

    Snowboarding [12]

    • Halfpipe (m/w)
    • Slopestyle (m/w)
    • Big Air (m/w)
    • Parallel Giant Slalom (m/w)
    • Parallel Slalom (m/w)
    • Snowboard Cross (m/w)

I'm really angry at the IOC for cutting the Parallel Slalom especially because the reasoning is so stupid. "It's too difficult to differentiate between the disciplines" Problem solved, one of the just isn't a parallel event anymore. Since I prefer the dynamic of parallel slaloms I decided to make the Giant Slalom the Individual event (with two runs like in alpine skiing btw) and bring back the old parallel slalom.

    • Team Pursuit (m/w)

I really don't have much knowledge of all ice skating sports so I just let them as they are.

  8. Although Tyrol voted against the games in Innsbruck Austria might still apply to host the games but with Graz as a host city instead. That said the only events taking place in Graz would be Ice Hockey, figure skating, Curling,...

The majority of the games would take place over 100 km in the west of the city with Alpine Skiing events taking place in Schladming, Nordic skiing in Ramsau/Bischofshofen and Freestyle skiing as well as snow boarding events taking place on the Kreischberg. So far that sounds quite good since all these cities have hosted world championships in the respective sport in the last 20 years, but I'm not quite as happy about the remaining locations. Biathlon would take place in Hochfilzen, and both bobsleigh and speed skating events would take place in Germany close to the Austrian border (Königssee, Inzell). Those venues wouldn't be extremely far away from the first three I've mentioned, but they are another 100km further away from Graz which simply makes Graz as the host city a completely stupid choice. I'm Austrian and of course I'd be happy if the games actually go to Graz but it would feel kinda strange to get the Olympic games back to Austria knowing the city which hosts the games wasn't even close to being the best option in the own country.

Anyway, looking at Sion's application, the distances there are even crazier. Sion is in the west of the country and as far as I know they want to make the bobsleigh events in St Moritz on the opposite side of the country. I mean why even have a host city if the events take place somewhere far away from there.
