In 2015, he magically threw 78 m in July (KAZ), but then at the World Championships merely weeks later he was suddenly at 71 m. Ugh.

Exactly! After reading about it the other day, I searched for a video and was stunned. So much different than a run-of-the-mill artistic swimming routine.

Still no precedent in this sport. It is simply impossible to gain more than one position during a single competition. And even that is extremely rare. I can only conclude that, aside from the iffy judging of course, there are also simply no risks involved. Everyone performs within their comfort zone and stays mistake-free.
