  1. Crosby plays in Buffalo the night before the OC. The game would end around 5am Milano time, that gives about 12 hours to get to Milano and be on the track. Not impossible if he has a charter, but not likely. Honestly, we have so many great athletes that never get the spotlight, I'd rather one of them get the moment. My favourite part of the OC is the Parade of Nations and I don't like how recent Games are diluting them. Paris on shared boats, and now with multiple venues. Clara Hugues leading Team Canada into Vancouver is so iconic to me. Watching the Parade of Nations live in Beijing and going crazy for Team Canada, and watching others go crazy for their countries. More of that. Crosby will light the flame in a home games in 20 years. And we'll all go crazy then.
  2. I agree, but McMorris had the best run of the day and should have gotten gold. Yiming got the hometown bump and should have been below both of them. Canada got robbed of gold the two previous, so I'm fine with how it worked out. Sort of how Cockburn got screwed out of a medal in trampoline in 2012, and then MacLennan got a controversial gold in 2016. Pay back. I'm also hoping for some favourability in short track in Italy, after some home town calls in Korea and China the last two rotations. But I'd rather Canadians just win outright.
  3. I can't wait to see which mid American the judges choose to give gold above him this time!
  4. I know you're kidding, but here I go. 29 medals, 12 golds. There, I said it. Rebounds in hockey, curling, and short track domination. They will struggle to find the top of the podium a lot of the time, but nowhere near the disaster of Beijing. I don't even think there will be tons of surprises, just the expected doing what's expected. Am I alone in feeling like there are very little predictions by publications this time around? Usually there are several online and in print predictions by now, but I can't find anything outside this site, besides a couple of figure skating and hockey ones. Not even Gracenote?
  5. Absolutely. He got another bronze in 2000, then it was nothing in 2004, Cochrane with a bronze in 2008, then got a silver in 2012 with Hayden and Weinberger with bronzes. 2016 finally got the country back on track in the water. Penny was our first female to get a medal in the pool in 20 years, and the first Canadian to get gold since Tewksbury in 1992. First woman to get gold since Ottenbrite in 1984. Unless I'm missing something, Ottenbrite was the first woman swimmer to ever get gold for Canada. That means MacNeil was the third woman, and Summer was the fourth. I did not realize that. I know Canada had lots of strong female swimmers in the 70s, and probably could have snagged a gold if not the 1980 boycott. Women swimmers were responsible for 7/11 medals Canada won in Montreal '76. Just took a trip down Wikipedia/Memory Lane.
  6. He was the first Canadian male swimmer to win 2 medals in a single Olympics since Curtis Myden in 1996. It's a shame.
  7. Awful news, but not unexpected unfortunately.
  8. Maltais silver in the mass start, Blondin 4th! Women's sprint team also take silver.
  9. Honestly, the lack of real competition in this event leaves the door open. It'll be about showing up and putting down a solid run in Italy.
  10. Weidemann doing the 1500?
  11. Many of the men lined up for the start, but then just went off after the gun. I guess they had to start for points, but didn't want to risk injury. The announcers didn't really comment on it.
  12. Many of the men not actually completing the race in the 500, including both Canadians.
  13. Lemarche 6th in the 500, Hiller-Donnelly 8th!
  14. I, too, use a VPN to watch the Olympics. But recently I've been able to get CBC content to work even without the VPN on here in Guatemala. Don't know if that'll work everywhere, or for the Olympics.
  15. Again, I respect and bow down to the hockey Gods. But Canada often loses to the US before the Olympics. Listen, it's 50/50 in any one game playoff. The USA lost to Sweden in the semis in 2006 for the women. And that goes for the men too. People are saying it's between Canada and the US. One game can change anything. Belarus scored from the center line in 2002 to get to the semis against Canada. On paper, it should be Canada vs USA in both genders, then whatever happens in that game. But before that things can happen. Heck, it was thought to be Canada vs Russia in 2010, and they met in the quarters. Then Canada barely squeaked by Latvia in the quarters in 2014. (Side note: the only goal given up by Canada in the playoffs was against Latvia). Edit: Canada allowed 3 goals in 6 games in Sochi. 2 of them where against Norway and Latvia (the other against Finland). Crazy. As a Habs fan, thank you Goalie Carey. Edit 2: It is insane that even though Price had a SV% 0.972, and shutouts in the semis and finals against the two biggest rivals, he was not named MVP of the tournament or to the all-star team. Ok, insane defence, but totally undervalued.
  16. I am not tempting the hockey Gods, I DO NOT TEMPT YOU I AM MERELY STATING FACTS MY LORDS! But, the Canadian women have only lost gold once in the last 6 Olympics, and it was in a shoot-out. You know, the one gold medal game I got to attend. And then I got to watch Koe lose in the semis to Americans later in the day. Fun times. (It actually was an amazing day, spent most of it in Canada House and met athletes and had a great time).
  17. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just saying what I've found online say we have threats in both those events. But still, it's all about relative ranking. So it's how you line up against one person/team of the few teams that are in the team event.
  18. I only passively follow figure skating, besides the big names. With Gogolev on form, is Canada a real threat for bronze now? I know we have fire power in pairs and dance, but it's all about rankings. Everything I read says it's Georgia/Italy for the bronze. Mandatory: We got screwed out of bronze in 2022.
  19. Can we wrap them in bubble-wrap?
  20. Just looking back, Canada gave up THREE goals total in 6 games in Sochi. And 2 of them were against Norway and Latvia (one more against Finland, none against Austria, USA and Sweden). But, at the same time, they had difficulty scoring (17 goals in 6 games, 6 against Austria). The only two Canadians in the top-10 of scoring were Weber and Doughty, both defencemen. I think this time around scoring won't be an issue, but goals against might be. It's not just the goalies, the defence could have been better, too. Also crazy that Price was by far the best goalie, named best goalie, too. But Lundquist was the All Star goalie of the tournament.
  21. Some interesting decisions here, but we knew they were coming (Doughty, Cirelli). Glad Celibrini made it, and I think Crosby probably had a say in that (after he was snubbed in 2006). I'm glad that Suzuki made it, he absolutely earned it. But, as a Habs fan, I'd rather he got the rest. Goalies....Who needs goalies? They'll just score 10 goals every game, right?
  22. A lot of Canadians aren't very impressed right now at home. This group isn't inspiring anyone on or off the ice.
  23. I think if he went later and had that target, he could have ended up on the podium. Luck of the draw.
  24. Weidenmann and Maltais are now 2-3 in the distance WC standings.
  25. And 4th for Maltais!
