  1. Well, this is historic. For the first time since 1987 Italy wasn't able to reach the final in any of the individual fencing events. (and in 1987 women's epee and women's sabre didn't exist)
  2. I thought that it was strange how Italy only has one chance left for an individual gold, so I started searching for the last WCh where Italy didn't win any gold medals in the individual events. And it's 1995, they won two team gold medals that year, but no individual gold medals.
  3. There goes our incredibly small chance of Olympic qualification in Women's epee. I think for the first time ever Hungary won't have a single female athlete at the Olympics in epee since the introduction of the event in 1996. Our team was way too young, they need one more Olympic cycle to get experience.
  4. United States continues to have a disappointing WCh, they were defeated by Romania in the R16 of Men's sabre. France is also out, which likely means that they won't have a men's sabre team in Tokyo.
  5. Multiple injuries today in Women's sabre, including our Katona.
  6. Yeah... the individual medals are great, but this will be a failed WCh for us if the teams flop. We need to qualify at least two teams (I guess we can realistically qualify three at best if everything works out perfectly, the men's epee team and the two sabre teams?)
  7. Top 10 nations in world ranking points after 4 events 1. Russia - 336,25 pts 2. Italy - 322,5 pts 3. Hungary - 286,25 pts 4. South Korea - 272,5 pts 5. France - 261,25 pts 6. China - 208,75 pts 7. Japan - 190,63 pts 8. Ukraine - 190 pts 9. United States - 166,25 pts 10. Germany - 132,51 pts
  8. 4 years ago Imre won the Men's Epee WCh for us at the age of 40, and now Siklósi wins it at the age of 21. Young world champions on the men's side so far (22 and 21).
  9. lol, they have won every single gold medal so far this year and they would win almost all the individual medals if diving would have the same 4 athletes per NOC system as fencing.
  10. Great comeback from Rédli, he defeated world rank #3 Limardo Gascon from 8-11.
  11. lol, another revenge for the Hungarians for a lost Olympic final. This time Siklósi defeated Park Sangyoung. (that Men's Epee Rio final still hurts so much. It was one of the most amazing comebacks I have ever seen in an Olympic final, too bad it happened against Géza Imre, who would have been such a deserving Olympic champion at the age of 41)
  12. We defeated them surprisingly easily, so I think you will most likely beat them in the QF based on your performance in the group stage.
  13. Christ, this "weaker" Serbia is terrifying against Greece. They will easily win a medal even with their B-team.
  14. That's not a new rule. Fencing always had two bronze medalists outside the Olympics in the individual events.
  15. Top10 nations in world ranking points after 2 events: 1. South Korea - 220 pts 2. Hungary - 135 pts 3. China - 130 pts 4. Italy - 127,5 pts 5. Russia - 122,5 pts 6. Ukraine - 85 pts 7. Brazil - 82,5 pts 8. France - 81,25 pts 9. United States - 81,25 pts 10. Germany - 78,75 pts
  16. Well, damn, Szatmári truly saved the day for us, medal on the "first" day.
  17. Only two Europeans in the Women's Epee QFs, and one of them is from Luxembourg. Edit: Three, not two.
  18. Szatmári kinda saves the day for us so far, we still have 2 in Saber. It will be hard to get that individual medal in Saber after Szilágyi's early defeat that I think many expected from our athletes here.
  19. The whole Montano-Gemesi match seemed like a clusterfuck of weird decisions. (and let's just say that the Hungarians absolutely hate Montano because of that similarly heated Athens Olympic final, so they are really happy about this result)
  20. Well, that's probably the biggest negative upset we will get at this WCh... Szilágyi out in R32.
  21. All the higher ranked fencers lost on the red piste including Navarria. Edit: And Kinga Nagy defeated world rank #4 Choi!
  22. What happened to her? I didn't follow fencing that closely since the last Olympics, the last time I saw her was when Szász defeated her in the Olympic final.
  23. Fiamingo already out in Women's Epee, defeated by Rodriguez Quesada from Cuba in R64.
  24. Number of qualified athletes per nation after the preliminary round (bold indicates nations that have at least one qualified athlete in all 6 events): 23 athletes France 22 athletes Italy, South Korea, United States 21 athletes Russia 20 athletes Hungary 19 athletes China 18 athletes Japan 15 athletes Ukraine 14 athletes Germany 13 athletes Canada, Hong Kong, Poland 10 athletes Great Britain, Romania 9 athletes Spain, Venezuela 7 athletes Egypt 6 athletes Czech Republic, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Turkey 5 athletes Estonia, Mexico 4 athletes Cuba, Iran, Tunisia 3 athletes Argentina, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Denmark, Israel, Netherlands, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Vietnam 2 athletes Belgium, Belarus, Chile, Colombia, Finland, Greece, India, Luxembourg, Thailand 1 athlete Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Latvia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia
