  1. Hey look, Canada won a medal
  2. There's an additional spot in the Copa Brasil at the end of the year too. Even if Guatemala fails here, your only other competitor would be El Salvador. Sure there are other South American nations, but if you can't beat them then you don't really deserve to qualify
  3. Looking at the eligible athlete lists, both Australia and New Zealand have athletes listed to compete in archery so I imagine they will. Also listed (and have a NOC) are
  4. Also as a reminder, the Pan American Games have higher priority so should a nation win a spot in both events, the next highest ranked eligible boat here will qualify instead.
  5. This is also the reason why I feel team events are relatively useless in shooting other than to award more medals to big nations.
  6. Yeah, the whole region is quite expensive, houses may be a lot cheaper relative to Vancouver, but most of them are pushing a million dollars each.
  7. As of end of June, 46 nations have at least one athlete achieving the Olympic Qualification Time. Here are the 10 largest teams based on times (no secondary internal selections) 1. United States - 30 2. Australia - 28 2. Japan - 28 4. China - 26 5. Italy - 25 5. Russia - 25 7. Great Britain - 20 8. Brazil - 15 8. Germany - 15 8. Hungary - 15 For Japan, the 2 athlete quotas for open water swimming are included. Overall, the usual suspects are in attendance. Both Canada and France lag behind with 10 athletes each
  8. It's a bit complicated, in theory we could have a scenario where more athletes (89 per gender) than athlete quotas (86 per gender) can qualify. Now that Germany's mixed doubles athletes must also be selected for the team event, those places kind of disappear into the void
  9. I guess with the late date for the World Championships the bigger nations are putting more of a focus on athletics
  10. Today, but in a year he could drop. It's the same with Istomin at the Asian Games who was I think in the 70s at the time and is now over 100.
  11. Someone is trying to guarantee themselves a spot at the Olympics...
  12. Yes, but are the two rounds combined? I think yes since Bulgaria is below Czechia and Hungary
  13. Not surprised about New Zealand not showing up, they most likely would have declined the quotas. I'm a bit surprised about Australia, though I guess they can take the women's quota at the continental qualifier and save money by not sending athletes to Samoa.
  14. The results are a bit confusing, are they not combining the two rounds?
  15. Yeah, my bad. The original point stands, Belarus did not pull a Turkmenistan and flooded the event with pro-Belorussian sports.
  16. Yes, 16 teams from the World Cup and 8 teams from the rankings (2 from each continent) will compete in four tournaments of six teams with the winner qualifying to the Olympics.
  17. Most likely, unless some top team in Europe really bombs the World Cup
  18. The only event that was added to boost Belarus' medals was sambo, though I guess they liked acrobatic and aerobic gymnastics being added too. Even if you removed those events, the nation is still in an easy second place. Not their fault other nations only competed with their B teams.
  19. Only Spain gets the quota, the second one will be transferred to the final qualification tournament.
  20. By that logic, the five continental champions aren't guaranteed to compete either. They too need to finish in the top 16 in the ranking round (though personally I consider the ranking round to be part of the competition).
  21. Yeah, quite happy for Canada, they needed this win as their ranking may not be enough to make the play-offs and even though we'll likely lose to a top team it's still nice to see the girls playing well.
  22. It perfectly balances the need for continental representation (something the IOC requires) and the best teams. If you are the seventh best team (or 8th if your continent gets a host quota) in your continent then you probably have the same chance at winning a medal as the best team from a weak continent.
  23. No, if the United States win then the European quarterfinal winners will qualify to the Olympics
  24. There is also a chance that Germany doesn't select Reitz and instead selects someone that doesn't have the MQS in 10m air pistol. Basically, it's best to wait until the 25m/50m/skeet shooters are announced before listing the nation as eligible to compete in the mixed team events.
  25. Yeah, the Olympics has always been about trying to achieve a balance between having the top athletes/teams and having a diverse group of competitors. At best you can argue that the African/South America play-off should be reallocated to Europe. The other option is to have one quota for each continent (+ host) and have the other five be decided in a secondary tournament.
