  1. Women's ice hockey can at least hide behind the men's tournament. Also ignoring the fact that it is dominated by Canada/USA participation in qualification is decent. 28 teams (including the host) attempted to qualify in 2018 which is good for a winter sport. As a comparison 37 men's teams attempted to qualify.
  2. The IOC can be a bit hypocritical with their universality rule. Look at coxed eights rowing. As much as I love the sport I acknowledge that the event is slowly dying yet it remains on the schedule.
  3. That's what happens when you are the weakest Summer Olympic sport for our nation. It's a bit of a catch-22, you need money to get better, but you won't get money until you become better.
  4. Yeah, the fact that we even qualified here is a miracle.
  5. Canada benefiting a lot from the United States. We really only deserve to qualify in women's team foil, but we are currently qualified in two other team events and the United States is 5th in another one.
  6. Well if you read the document it says there is no additional standard for relays qualifying at the World Championships. Regardless, the relay belongs to the Netherlands until they officially decline, the DSQ should have no bearing on their choice.
  7. Looking at their qualifying document it says that no additional standard will need to be met for relays qualifying at the World Championships.
  8. No the quotas were given out based on the results from heats.
  9. Nice, that makes Samoa the second Pacific nation to qualify after Fiji in rugby sevens.
  10. Big opportunity for a Pacific nation to qualify now that both Australia and New Zealand look safe. The fight between the four nations on the outside is still relevant as either Argentina or Uruguay should qualify through the Pan American Games.
  11. Don't be part of that generation with no attention span
  12. But it is a sprint 100/200/400 = sprint 800/1500 = middle 5000/10000 = long
  13. While true, that doesn't explain why the men can't even make it out of the heats while the women are winning medals. Swimming isn't that deep in talent.
  14. Especially when you compare it to the men's side, it's hard to say its from management, maybe we got very lucky.
  15. You are correct. Someone should fix the Wikipedia page
  16. Shame about Ruck, 200m freestyle had medal potential for her. I imagine she'll be dropping the 50m freestyle too since that's her weakest individual event. She could have potentially featured in 10 events and to be honest that's a lot for one swimmer, she'll likely only compete in the finals for most relays too. She could miss the mixed freestyle relay if she makes the 200m backstroke final since they are on the same session.
  17. Good choice. I think it was their best choice considering Kimberly Garcia will be busy with the torch, unless they wanted to go with a medalist from 2015
  18. From a race not overall, though it did move her from a huge lead to 12th due to her retiring during the next race.
  19. Even ignoring the daunting task of defeating the United States just for the opportunity to play for the quota, New Zealand may not take the quota. The federation is a bit strict. They also lost a good defense ("We finished in the top 10") by losing to Kazakhstan. They might go the South Africa route where they will decline the continent quota, but play in the final qualification tournament.
  20. I think the men's athletics team is stronger than the women's. At least in terms of medal prospects.
  21. For each relay qualified, a nation may enter up to two relay-only athletes (up to a max of 12 athletes)
  22. Quite happy for Hong Kong women for getting a quota. Very sad for Canadian men for failing, finishing in 13th. Our men's team is so weak now.
  23. FINA doesn't have it written on what happens to the redistributed quota if an athlete competes in both diving apparatuses. In 2016 Woo Ha-ram's quota was counted for the 10m Platform as was interestingly enough Patrick Hausding whom competed in both synchronized events and the 3m springboard, but not the individual 10m platform.
