Athletics Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

That’s one of the main problems with this system. What does World Athletics consider “higher level events?” Like Gittens said, the level of the SEC Champs was higher than many events rated above it. Also, many “higher level events” are invitation only, so if you don’t have a good agent, promoter, or federation you’re essentially shut out of a qualification opportunity. Additionally, the world ranking doesn’t actually award athletic performance, it awards circumstance like I said above. There were multiple situations were an athlete had a much higher mark than those ranked ahead of them, yet they were ranked lower just because they didn’t attend some super fancy, exclusive, invite only athletics meet.

If World Athletics actually wanted to increase the standard of competition, they’d use the “top lists” instead of the world ranking. If you reward athletes based purely off performance, it’s hard to see how athletes won’t be motivated to better each other’s marks.

I’d argue the current system isn’t fair because all athletes don’t have the same opportunities. Plus, just because a system might be equally terrible for many athletes, it doesn’t make it a fair system. The current system might be equal in some ways, but it’s definitely not equitable.

If one thinks current qualification system is not good, they can propose some discussion before the document released for next Paris period. Each member could propose some preferred system including taking results point into account only or purely by best performance raking.

The fairness I refer to is that once the qualification process is confirmed, everyone should obey it. You can't process this system for almost 2-3 years but find that you may exclude/excluded on the last week then you say it's unfair I think it should be counted by Toplist ranking instead of Road to Tokyo ranking and I would be qualified based on that ranking list.

Basically the fairness I mean is that no matter the qualification system good or bad. It should be implemented equally for everyone and it should not give wild card for someone yelling it's not fair and I would be qualified if based on another qualification system.

That’s essentially the point I’m making. My posts were just to point out flaws with the current qualification system.

The shift from top lists to Rankings was driven mainly by the miracle results athletes get in obscure meets in the last few days of qualification. Hence, very high A standard and after that rankings. But, it has clearly failed because 1) still too many miracle results and 2) Pandemic resulting in many athletes not taking part in enough good competitions.

I personally feel the old system, basically top lists, is simpler and better but do understand why WA moved to ranking based system.

Question about universality places. Weren't they supposed to awarded regardless the ranking? In men's 800m, 48 spots,  awarded 4 universality but added to the ranking and 2 :CZE runners out of ranking. Without universality places, they are on positions 46,47....

Unfortunately the same thing happened to a Greek girl in the women's 400m. However she is only three out and apparently two other girls won't compete so she will be one out (thus would've made it if not for the universality places in that event)

I don't remember this guy achieving the entry standard in May. I could be wrong but it seems like he was just added now to the qualifiers for an event that happened in May in Georgia with almost perfect wind and he jumped 17.16 (with 17.15 being the standard). He has never jumped close to 17m outside of Armenia. I don't want to jump to conclusions but this is very suspicious.

Until now Dimitrios Tsiamis was 32 in Road to Tokyo. Now he's 33 and the Italian guy who achieved the standard was already ahead of Tsiamis by ranking so it can't be him. I looked at the men's triple jump a lot and do not remember this Armenian guy having achieved the standard so it must be him that bumped Tsiamis down to 33. Is it even possible for results from last month to be added in at the last moment like that? It doesn't sit well with me.

Does no one else find this crazy about the Armenian guy? World Athletics not posting his result until ONE MONTH LATER. This is so ridiculous and unfair. Plus he might've gotten a universality place anyways so did they really have to go pull this suspicious stunt at the last minute like that?

In that case Tsiamis also qualified. His wind assisted 17.21 in May (before he got injured) was actually +2.0 and not +3.0. We couldn't just say the initial wind reported was wrong? It seems like that's what Armenia did...

But now Armenia can enter an universality woman, as they did today in the 100 m. :p

    • the basic is the same but with different tricks, different strategy etc. it's a mixture of frestyle and Greco because you can't dive for a single leg attack.    I'm surprised to see ~20 wrestlers in each weight. hopefully that doesn't tempt UWW or IOC to try this in major events. as a wrestling fan I find this very unwatchable !
