Again, I'm not disputing that Lieke was poor by her standards. But I just don't get why you are seemingly cutting him more slack than you are her!

Simply because, in my opinion (and based on recent results), she was further from what can realistically be expected from her than Bonevacia was from what can realistically be expected from him.

But I feel this is never going to end, because we won't agree anyway, so it'll be a matter of agreeing to disagree :p

Ugh, Grøvdal so much deserved that win :(

Battocletti just glued to her wheel for 4900 meters, to use cycling terms.

It’s karma. Petter Northug anyone? ;)

Well, first day - amazing results by :CZE 18 y.o. juniors Jakub Dudycha and Petr Meindlschmid. At least Stánek made it to the final of shot put. Rest Czechs kinda behind expectations and there will still be a lot to do in order to keep the qualifying spot to Paris or even move up to one. Such as discuss thrower Marek Bárta who I believe would still need to take part in 2 competitions and make a great results in order to move up.

Pity for race walker Martínková who was fighting for a medal and Olympic limit all the time until she got the 2min penalty. Let's hope other days will bring better results for our team 😀

can she make the Olympic minimas?

I decided to do a deeper dive on this.

Currently, she has 3915 points.

If she does an = PB in the remainder of her three events, she’ll record a mark of 6551 points, well above the Olympic standard. If she does an =SB in the remainder of her three events, she’ll record a mark of 6443 points, or 37 below the Olympic standard.

But with how well she’s been doing so far she should have no problem achieving it, as long as she doesn’t no mark or anything like that.

Even if she doesn't get a Q, she's probably looking at 6300 as a bare minimum, even if she has relatively poor performances on day 2.

That would put her much higher up the list in the rankings, meaning that she's almost certain to get a place in Paris that way. I reckon as long as she gets to the end of the hept with disaster (injury, no mark in LJ etc) she's probably booked her ticket one way or another.

    • is having its general election today.   In a big turnaround, the Liberals lead by Mark Carney are now ahead in the polls, after having been over 20 points behind as recently as December. This is mostly credited to the resignation of Justin Trudeau and America's on and off trade war, along with comments Donald Trump made about Canada becoming the 51st state.   While the Liberals are favoured to win a fourth consecutive election, there is a lot of uncertainty around whether it will be a majority or a minority government. There is also an outside chance of the Conservatives, lead by Piere Poilievre, will form a minority government.
    • Ukraine has made progress recently and lost yesterday on penalties to the UK, but that still doesn't explain why the Italian team isn't making any progress. We are sitting in a lower division for 3 years and that's with a ban for Rus and Blr. New and great coaches are being brought in and it's not giving any results. 8-10 years ago we were regularly playing in the highest division, every 2 years and that was with a much stronger teams (Russia and Belarus were there). I don't know where the problem is.

    • Many things, probably they thought it is already over and the win will come itself... but also Nitra improved their play a lot, they outplayed us in physicality in the last 2 games, they won almost every duel. Was hard to watch. Anyway I am still persuated we will finish the job at home with success on Tuesday
    • If you look at their results this season and on the Super Series, it’s not really that surprising.    I’d consider them to be medal contenders.
    • At one point it seemed we were making good progress in this sport, but in the past 1-2 years things seem to have hit a standstill..   Ivaylo Ivanov is still our only elite judoka, but he is passing 30. There were/are some promising youngsters, but they haven't been able to make a jump to the senior level. At this Euro we barely had any first round wins (not including Ivanov). In fencing and taekwondo the results are much more visible for us.
    • yes, but that's only an (important) episode... I mean, what's up with your team more in general...it looks like they got the classic "fear to win", they're not as brilliant as they were in the early games of the series
