After a long selection process, Mecano has been selected as the Spanish representative for the Totallympics Open International Song Contest 2023. The band, formed by Ana Torroja (main voice), Nacho Cano and José María Cano, became the most popular music group in the country in the 1980s. The song Barco a Venus, was released in 1983 as the first single of their second album, and it is about the dangers of drug addiction.

Mecano - Barco a Venus

Lyrics (Spanish):

Spoiler

Dices que siempre estás viajando
pero me estás engañando.
Yo sé que tú estás solo
y que no sales de tu cuarto.

Las luces de la calle
te hacen daño cuando sales
porque tu mundo es otro
mucho más oscuro.

Déjalo ya, sabes que
nunca has ido a Venus
en un barco.
Quieres flotar
pero lo único que haces
es hundirte.

Sabes que pasas por la vida
sin salir de tu mentira
que muchos alimentan
y que crece día a día.

La mafia te atosiga
y te coge la policía,
te encierran y te sueltan
y todos te dicen

Déjalo ya, sabes que
nunca has ido a Venus
en un barco.
Quieres flotar
pero lo único que haces
es hundirte.

Lyrics (English):

Spoiler

You say you're always traveling, but you're cheating on me.
I know you're alone and you don't leave your room.
Street lights hurt you when you go out
Because your world is a much darker one
You know you've never been to Venus on a boat.
You want to float, but all you do is sink.
You know you go through life without getting out of your lie
That many Feed and that grows day by day
The mafia is after you and the police catch you
They lock you up and release you and they all tell you…
You know you've never been to Venus on a boat.
You want to float, but all you do is sink.
Let it go, you know you've never been to Venus in a…
Let it go, you know you've never been to Venus in a…
You know you've never been to Venus on a boat.

I hope you like it! Initially, I was planning to send "Hijo de la Luna",  "La Fuerza del Destino" or "Mujer contra mujer", more successful pop songs of Mecano, but I decided that it would be nice to send a different music style and the techno-pop of this song is very identifiable with the 1980s. My other option was Hombres G, but I will save them for a future edition ;).

Not saying any personal opinion about this specific one (Barco a Venus), but just want to say that "Hijo de La Luna" would have killed it :d

I wonder how many Lorde songs will be submitted to TISC before the biggest hits show up. It's like there's a silent agreement that submitting Royals would be unfair. :p

It’s not her best song*, so that’s probably why no one has submitted it :p

* not her best song = not my favorite

So this is how I learn that Lorde is half Croatian :d

Her mom is a poet, Sonja Jelic. If I remember correctly even she was born in NZ. There is some connection between people from Dalmatia region in Croatia and NZ. Marina Erakovic the only player winning a WTA singles title for NZ in this century (and I think it was the first one after Belinda Cordwell winning back in the year when I was born :d) has also Dalmatian heritage.
