Russian athletes that have changed nationalities

Recommended Posts

Laguta and Sayfutdinov had Polish citizenship for a while now and there was a debate last year whether we should treat them as Poles anyway. Obviously speedway is a niche sport nobody cares about in the big picture :p

The fact that Russian athletes competes for other countries doesn't change their nationality, many of them did this to continue to earn money from the sport and not because they are really against this war, unfortunatly.

Yes,because they don't feel like their sport careers should be stopped,it's not their fault if that option is on the table, they would be dumb to not consider taking advantage off it

just checked again to make sure they didn't change the rule

"The new national federation of a wrestler who wishes to change his/her sports nationality shall send a request in writing with complete file and payment(s) to United World Wrestling in the period between 1 and 31 December."

but maybe Greek federation sent the request earlier but if they didn't he has to wait until 2024 to be eligible.

He is competing for Greece at the upcoming European Championships! It was announces yesterday by our media.

I think that Nikolaev will have trouble changing his sports nationality to Australia with World Aquatics' updated nationality rules because he hasn't even been living Australia for a year yet let alone three years. Kirpichnikova on the other hand has been living in France for quite a while hasn't she?

I wonder if World Aquatics changed the rules because they were anticipating a flood of Russians switching nationality.

I confirm, Kirpichnikova lives in France and trains in France. she has French nationality because yesterday she competed in the French open water championships in Martinique.

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)

    • I read the Olympic qualification documents for weightlifting. A country can have the opportunity to send a maximum of 4 athletes in one gender, but the conditions are very strict.
    • world champion Jessica Schilder opened her season up with 19.78 in France.
    • wait! what???   so, there won't be specialized double sculls, but those boats would have to feature 2 single specialists if a Nation wants to enter 2 proper singles M+W??? tell me I misread the expalaination...
    • Yeah, they do get broadcast pretty regularly.  I remember even back in Bode Miller's day they would show the training.
