Summer Olympic Games 2020 Medal Count

Recommended Posts

For the first time ever :IRL has won gold in 2 different sports at the same Olympics

Also the first time we’ve had both men and women win a gold medal at the same time

Only our 11th time winning gold

Best position ever for :BRA at the medal table (12th). Hoping for a record also at the Paralympics but it will be difficult (7th in 2012 is our best).

:HUN backs to 20 total medals since 1996

6 gold is fine, I had predicted 8 but  7 is what I really expected (one more gold from Hosszú/Men's Finn/Siklósi in Epee/Men's Team Sabre/W K2-500/Open Water), so a little bit disappointing.

I've to say, I think we had a good team this year, far better than Rio. These are 20 clean medals without overperformances, without surprise medals and with 14 (!!!) 4th places.

2 golds and 2 bronze for Ireland, I am over the moon with that. I hoped for 4-5 medals and one gold so definitely met my wish. And we left a few medals out there too which bodes well too since we definitely didn’t have a perfect Games. Buzzing to follow the Road to Tokyo Paris now :cheer:

In the end, it was Day 3 that has cost :CHN China the top spot with losses in diving, table tennis and weightlifting (which also prevented sweeps in all of those sports).

I don't think China have ever had a clean sweep in diving. They always fail to win 1-2 of the events.

The only remaining thing to be decided among the top ten countries is whether France can overtake Germany and Italy to finish 8th by winning the women's handball final.

We lost the gold medal race 38-39 on the last day. A little bit sad but still quite excited when you engaged in this full process. It's an almost perfect OG for us with 38 golds and 88 medals with some breakthrough and some unexpected losses. But it's the beauty of sport and Olympics. Start to looking forward to Paris 2024 now.:cheer:

    • It looks like the IIHF is sticking with 3-on-3 overtime for all events moving forward.     BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    • Although it was a terrible Olympics for Canada, and my two favourite sports (Hockey and Short Track) really didn't work out for us, there were a couple of fun times.    -Women's Pursuit team winning gold because while it was not unexpected at all, it was still a great triumph against an amazing adversary.    -Dubreuil getting a surprise bronze in speed skating 500m.    -Really all of speed skating, Canada and otherwise.    -I really want to say Dubois getting gold in short track, but the whole thing was a mess.    -The last two ends of the men's curling gold medal game.    -Kingsbury getting gold. But it was more relief than excitement, unfortunately.    -I really like the luge relay. Canada was not involved, unfortunately, but it's always fun to watch.    -Men's freeski big air final was nuts! In all the good ways. That was truly the highest level of competition I've seen in a very long time.    -The dog crossing the finish line in cross country, which should have been the meme of the Olympics (not that...other thing).
    • It was also nice to have actual crowds again. I think the Beijing organizers did the best they could given the COVID regulations that still existed in China at the time, but it sure did dampen the atmosphere *a lot*.
    • I was in premium economy as well, the extra five inches of leg room definitively helped me stay sane.   For BA I was in business class and I just wasn't impressed at all, despite the cabin itself being really good (it was a 787-900 so their newer business class product). The service was just... not good enough for international business class - they actually made me appreciate Air Canada xD . With Condor I could forgive the service not being that good because of how little (relatively) I paid, and the seat was comfortable enough.
    • Yes. This was the best WOG since at least Sochi 2014. I only started paying attention to the Olympics after London 2012, so small sample size. But, this was the best WOG I can remember. European fans and atmosphere make everything better in my opinion.
    • There were lots of good moments , this olympics felt so special (I am talking of WOG). The last time I really enjoyed viewing WOG was in Sochi & this tops it. So many feel good moments, very well attended event with spectators filling up stands & making an atmosphere. So many top performances, but for me the  women team dominating the Biathlon event was really special. All 3 of them were just so good & gave top performance. I love it how the female commentator pronounced  Lou Jeanmonnot  & finally grazie mille  we loved it! Thanks for making me fall in love with winter sports again
    • I'm surprised that some Hungarians here are interested in some Nazis in Kiev, instead of their country's economic decline over the last 15-20 years, falling under Romania's level of GDP, when around 2000 it was the richest country in the all former post-communist region. But I understand that this is Orban's tactic to continue ruling and stealing the country, to distract from truly important matters and focus on trivial matters. Clinton's campaign slogan in the USA many years ago: "The economy, stupid!" I think that the current opposition leader in HUN should probably do the same- just do your thing and let Orban himself with all of this Soros, Nazis, etc, only the Martians are still missing in this madness, but that may come to pass
    • I found Condor really nice. I did upgrade myself, so maybe thats why. I would fly them again
