*Indian at the Tokyo Olympics ……..3 days to Olympics ……….post 8 of 10 by nitin sanker* We have looked at 6 out of the 8 medal possible sports of India and today we look at *Wrestling* Wrestling was a part of Olympic history right from the ancient Olympics , In modern olympics it started with a single Greco roman event in 1896, and has been a part of every Olympics ( except 1900). Amongst the combat sports wrestling stands out as a combination of strength , stamina and technique that makes it a dazzling sport to watch. The current Olympic program consists of 18 events , 6 in mens Greco roman ( where you do cannot attack the opponents legs or use your legs ) , 6 in mens free style and 6 in womens freestyle. In India wrestling is one of the true grass root sports especially in the rural districts of Haryana , UP , Punjab and Rajasthan. It is a sport deeply etched in Indian ethos, first codified in the 13th century text the Malla Purana , it was always popular with wrestlers like the Great Gama and Rustom-e-hind Dara Singh commanding a super hero status in yesteryears. While we have scant rewards at the Olympics this has been a big sport for India at the asian games ( 59 medals ) and commonwealth games ( 102 medals ) At the Olympics Wrestling is the one sport after Hockey where India has garnered the maximum medals(5). KD Jadhav started the wrestling medals for India having won a bronze in the bantamweight category in 1952. In recent years we have won a medal at each of the Olympics beginning with 2008. Now lets look towards Tokyo. In recent times Indian Wrestlers have done very well culminating in a record 4 medals at the previous UWW world championships in 2019 ( we have been averaging one per championship before that ). We have 7 wrestlers in this sport at Tokyo ( 3 in Mens Free and 4 in Womens free, none in Greco ) of which six I believe are medal prospects. *57 Kgs Men* : Ravi Kumar Dahiya is one of the world championship medalists with a bronze in 2019. A really strong wrestlers with tremendous stamina , Definitely a *likely* *65 Kgs Men* : Bajrang Punia , trained by Yogeshwar Dutt initially , he is 3 time world championship medallist. Bajji is known for a relentless attacking style and also has a weaker leg defence but often comes from behind for his victories. Definitely the most storied wrestler in India’s squad , definitely a *likely* *86 Kg Men* : Deepak punia is that very rare commodity in Indian wrestling , a good heavyweight wrestler. Deepak has come up from the ranks , winning a gold in both the cadet and youth championships and successfully graduated to the seniors with a resounding silver at the world championships . But due to his youth I am keeping him as a *possible* only *53 kg women* : Vinesh Phogat is from probably the best women wrestler to come from the iconic Phogat Family ( of Dangal Fame ) she is a niece of Mahavir Phogat of dangal fame , and may be the member who brings to the family of fabulous wrestlers the coveted Olympic medal. She is favoured to win a medal having won a world championship bronze. Definitely a *likely* * 57 Kg women and 62 kg women* :Anshu Malik and Sonam Malik . I have clubbed these two together because their stories run parallel , born 30 km apart in Haryana , a few months apart to famous wrestling families ( yes there are famous wrestling families in Haryana ). They were fierce competitors in juniors ( even their fathers had a fight because of a controversial result amongst the two ) and then decided to be in parallel weight classes and are now best of friends and roommates when they travel. Both have come through the junior ranks together at the global level. Anshu winning gold and two bronzes at the cadet level and then a gold and a silver at the junior level , Sonam winning two golds and a bronze at the cadet level. Both then beat very storied wrestlers Pooja Dandha and Sakshi Malik to qualify for the national team and then won the quotas in the same event. Both because of their youth are *Possibles* not likely in Tokyo *Medal Prediction in wrestling* : 2 to 4

*Indian at the Tokyo Olympics ……..4 days to Olympics ……….post 7 of 10 by nitin sanker* We have looked at 5 out of the 8 medal possible sports of India and Today we look at *Badminton* Badminton was a game which originated in India in the mid 1800s , originally called “poona” it was later renamed after the duke of beauforts country estate where it began to be played. Despite its early Indian origin , we had no great names till prakash padukone flashed like a comet in the early 1980s winning the all England and won a bronze at the world championship , subsequently we have had good players like Pullela Gopichand ( the current head coach of badminton ) who won the all England in 2001 but nothing really earth shattering till the advent of the dynamic duo PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal in 2010s . Thanks mostly to them we have won a medal at every badminton world championships from 2011. Badminton is a bit of a late entrant to the Olympics having its first appearance in 1992 , it become very popular especially with the fabled rivalry between Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei . India has done well in recent times with a bronze by Saina in 2012 and the very famous silver by Sindhu in 2016. So looking forward to Tokyo Sadly we have a bit of a diminished side with single participation in 3 events – womens and mens singles and mens doubles . Sai Praneeth faces a very difficult draw where if he progresses to the quarters he meets world No 1 the Kento Momota in the quarters where I see no hope of him progressing , the dynamic pair of Chirag and Satwik are in group of death situation in the mens doubles facing the “minions” world number 1 pair from Indonesia and the current world no 3 from Taipei , I do not see them crossing the group phase. From a medal perspective we have only one likely medallist *Womens Singles* : she is that rare Indian Sportsperson who brings her best game to her biggest events with 5 world championship medals and an Olympic silver, she is a legitimate claimant to the title of G.O.A.T in womens badminton. She is the reigning world champion. Of course PV Sindhu . Her form has not looked the best in 2021 but without doubt she will play her heart out in Tokyo as she did in Rio. She is currently seeded 7th but the way women’s badminton looking any of the top 8 will be able to win gold. She has a good to head to head record against most of them except current world number One - Tai Tzu Ying and Carolina Marin. Marin will not be in Tokyo because of an Injury. As per the draw Sindhu’s first real battle will be in the quarter finals against Akane Yamaguchi in the quarters , Sindhu is ahead 11-7 record in the head to head and did beat her recently, it will not be easy but I see Sindhu reaching semis. There she most probably comes against her nemesis Tzu , who has a 13-5 record against Sindhu and has beaten her several times in the recent times. Still I will give Sindhu a fifty- fifty chance to get to the finals just because of Sindhus ability to bring her big game to crunch matches . If she reaches the finals she might meet Chen Yufei. For me Sindhu is a “likely” medalist *Medal Prediction* - 0 to 1 in badminton

*Indian at the Tokyo Olympics ……..6 days to Olympics ……….post 5 of 10 by nitin sanker* Reaching halfway point here , these post are taking time ( a couple of hrs of research ) do let me know if you have them useful and share them in other groups We have looked at 3 out of the 8 medal possible sports of India and Today we look at *Athletics* This is the blue riband sport in the Olympics which gets the maximum viewership, A sport with a huge number of 48 events ( this divided into track , field and road events ) , it has made famous names like Jesse owens , Usain bolt , Carl Lewis, Abebe Bikila and so many great names India has participated in athletics in 1900 with 2 silvers on the name of Norman Prichard , since then we have not won a single medal though came agonizingly close with *Milkha Singh , PT Usha* who both finished 4th and the *Gurbachan Singh Randhawa and Anju George* who finished 5th . Let us look at our chances in athletics this time . we have a squad of 26 participating in 14 events ( out of 48 ) . Lets look at the medal prospects . we have only two *Javelin* - Neeraj Chopra is the best athlete we have had since Anju George , In 2016 he won the world under 20 world championship gold medal , he has been a commonwealth and Asian Gold medal and comes into the Olympics as 4th best on 2021 leading scores . his is an event where gold will almost undoubtedly go to Vetter of Germany who is well above the rest and there are many who have a personal best higher than Neeraj , but javelin is a sport where athletes rarely reach their personal best at the Olympics , Neeraj both has the big game temperament and has been consistent this year , if he throws close to 90 he will probably get a medal ( personal best of 88.07 which he has done in 2021) . So a *Likely* *womens discus* - Kamalpreet Kaur , this lady has been in great form breaking the NR fairly often , she comes in ranked 6th in 2021 , but we have to see whether she can replicate that in a big event , as she has shot up the ranks fairly fast . Well not likely but a *possible* While we have only two prospects let us look at other who can reach the finals and that itself is a good achievement , every games we have had the rare privilege to see an Indian name in the atheletics in a final. This happens usually in just 1-2 events . This time besides the above two . tejinder toor in mens shotput , racewalkers in 20KM in both men and women ( there is no finals here so I would look for a 10th place or above finish ) , Annu Rani in womens javelin , the mens 4*400 and the mixed 4*400 may give us a position in the finals . *If we get more than 3 finalists* ( we had a max of 3 at the london olympics )that by itself would be a sign of improvement ( I feel that is almost sure , I am hoping for around 5 finalists). *Medal prediction 0-1 at tokyo*

I will focus on these *Flyweight Men* - Amit Phangal is currently ranked world number 1 and a reigning world championship silver medallist and is the reigning Asian games champion. He has lovely footwork and compensates by quick in and out boxing . Definitely a “likely” medal *Lightweight men* Manish kaushik is an elegant boxer always a pleasure to watch , he is a current world championship, he is currently ranked 18th which is more based on weird ranking system but a definite *likely* to medal for me *Welterweight* Vikas Krishan Yadav will be taking part in his 3rd Olympics, Immensely talented a youth gold medallist in 2010 , followed by a world championship bronze Vikas has been a bit of a bad boy of Indian boxing often missing camps and sometimes reaching big events not in great physical shape , he currently looks very focused and after a brief stint in pro boxing seems to want to redeem his early promise , always a *likely* for me *Flyweight women* : Mary Kom , the diminutive Manipur is a legend in Boxing and India , she is the rare Indian G.O.A.T ( greatest of all time ) in an Olympic sport by winning 6 world championship gold medals , the highest by any women boxer. Her favored pinweight has never been part of the Olympic program and she is forced to box in the Flyweight. She is looking to cap her great legacy with another Olympic medal . The best boxing brains in the business , she will be surely a *likely* *Lightweight women* Simaranjit Kaur is seeded 4th and a 2018 bronze at the world championship underlines her class. This sport is often marred by corruption and an opaque scoring system but remains one of the great Olympic sports. India has had a good boxing history with Indian boxers taking part at the Olympics since 1948 when we sent a 7 member squad. we have had some really good boxers , starting with *Ron Norris* who reached the quarterfinals of the Olympics in 1952 , the legendary Heavyweight *Hawa singh* the only Indian till now who has won two consecutive asian golds who also the co-founder of the bhiwani boxing club , the northeast champion *dingko singh* , the matinee idol good looking *vijender singh* and the magnificent *mary kom*. Indian at the Tokyo Olympics ……..8 days to Olympics ……….post 3 of 10 by nitin sanker Today we look at archery Archery started in 1900 at the Olympics , but started being contested only from 1972 consistently. An amazing story from archery is that of the almost blind archer Im Dong Hyun who won 2 golds and a silver. Growing up on a diet of ramanand sagar and watching people shoot arrows which hit other arrows in midair , we should be world leaders in archery . We started our Olympic journey in archery in 1988 , but it is only since the early 2000s that we have evolved into a world class team. We have won world championship medals in the mens team event in 2005 and 2019 , the womens team in 2011 and 2015. We have had a presence in archery since 1988 , but despite medaling fairly often at the world championship , an Olympic medal has always avoided us , we have reached the QF with the women teams in 2004 , 2008 and in 2016 . 2016 was a heartbreaker where India was leading and then just lost it in the last few minutes to Russia. So what will happen in Tokyo. We have a presence in 4 out of 5 events ( the mixed pairs is introduced for the first time ). Shockingly our 3 ranked womens team lost in the qualifiers twice to get eliminated Mens Individual : Atanu das , Praveen Jadhav and Tarundeep rai will all try for a medal here , but despite having three players ( atanu das ranked 9th ) , an individual medal here does not look possible . Womens Individual : here we have the prodigiously talented Deepika Kumari in her third olympics as our sole participant , for me Deepika has been a paradox, immensely talented she won the youth world championship at just 15 , held the world record for some time and has been ranked world number 1. But despite her talent she has underperformed in big stages and she has never won a world championship individual medal or come close to an Olympic medal losing tamely to lower ranked players. Currently she looks determined to throw away that tag and she enters tokyo on a real hot streak , winning two individual world cups in 2021 and enters Tokyo ranked world number 1. But with three Korean women , Perova of Russia and Lei Chien of Taipei all likely medalists and her continual poor performance in the big stage , I am forced to put her as possible but not likely medallist Mens team : The mens team enters as the reigning world championship silver medalists but have not been consistent and are currently ranked 8th . But with their show at the world championships they have the potential to medal so we have to put them also as possible but not likely. Mixed pair : the mixed pair is not a fixed team but consists of the highest ranked woman in the initial ranking rounds and the highest ranked male , the likely pairing is Atanu das and his wife Deepika ( they got married in 2020 ) , this is a good pair , ranked currently 7th but with strong pairs from Netherlands , south korea, Russia , Chinese Taipei , a medal is possible but not likely Medal prediction 0 to 1 for me in archery . It would be wonderful for Indian Archery to win a medal here but let us see if they are able to get the mental toughness to get there.

Post 2 of 10 , with just 9 days to go before Olympics We look at the chances of the Indian team at the 8 likely to medal sports Olympics and start with weightlifting Weightlifting has been a sport in the Olympics almost continuously since 1896 . women weightlifting was introduced only 2000 at Sydney. It has had great champions like Naim suleymonglu – the pocket Hercules and dimas the only man to have won 4 medals in weightlifting. InTokyo we have 14 weight classes 7 in women and 7 in men India has had a long history in this sport with participation starting in 1936 berlin. The largest Indian team has had 5 members in 1996 olympics but normally we have i 2-3 people . India was never really good at weightlifting till the late 90s where Indias women weightlifting squad was really good with 3 really great women weight lifters, Kunjarani devi , Karnam Malleshwari and Neelam setti laxmi winning multiple world championship medals . When women weightlifting started in 2000 we duly had our first Olympic medallist in karnam malleshwari , but just when things were looking up there were multiple doping violations among the women weightlifters (except karnam malleshwari). Hinduja group which was heavily sponsoring the team walked out and Indian weightlifting took a turn for the worse . This year we have only 1 weightlifter but in quality this is the best team since the 2000 olympics because after a long time we have a truly world class weightlifter padma shri awardee Mirabai Chanu in the 48 Kg Class . Weightlifting is a sport where the medals mostly go as per the rankings and Mirabhai is ranked second , she also is the only woman to have won a world championship since malleshwari. She also the world record holder in Clean & jerk. 1- likely and with her event on day 1 we are likely to start the Olympics this time with a bang · - likely means around 50% probability or above . MY prediction – 1 medal
