@phelps you have to give credit to this guy, I never saw such a persistent troll. he never gives up on cancelling the Olympics (or anything similar to that) when he fails on "his mission" for Tokyo 2020, he focused on Paralympics 2020 and Beijing 2022. the next is probably Paris 2024. he never gives up

I really don't understand what people want.

If Russia wins everything, this sport is a mess, it should be removed from the Olympics, the world is doomed. If Russia loses the gold medal, this sport is a mess, it should be removed from the Olympics, the world is doomed.

The Russians are probably fuming of anger that someone else dared to win in their own sport. The "offending" judges may expect a nice package in the mail with some polonium (a la Litvinenko) or Novichok (a la Skripal)....

95% of my enjoyment comes from gymnastics events. I don't think we've ever had an edition of the Olympics with more surprises and dramas than Tokyo.

    Some of the highlights:
    1) Simone Biles showed huge character by stepping out of most of the finals. I've become an admirer after such strength.
    2) ROC winning two team events surprising everyone.
    3) Gold medal for Brazil, of course.
    4) First-ever medals for Armenia, New Zealand and Turkey.
    5) Drama, tears and crazy results in rhythmic gymnastics, with ROC this time losing both events.

Seriously, I couldn't have asked for more.

I liked this edition and it's been the best ever OG for me. Yes, it would have been even better if spectators were allowed, but given the situation, Japan did a good job. I have lots and lots of complaints about the Japanese government and their lack of responsibility by failing to vaccinate the population, but this has nothing to do with the Olympics per se.

I enjoyed skateboarding a lot, and it has become one of the top 5 sports for me. I didn't like surfing at all. Karate was an absurd and unnecessary addition, in my opinion, and I'm glad it will probably never return to the program. I'm also glad Baseball will be gone, hopefully for good.

The only thing I miss is that there isn't an specific athlete this time that can be recognized as the face of the Olympics, like we've had with Bolt and Phelps. For me, I guess it will be Biles. She proved that competing at the Olympics is more than going for medals. Respect yourself first and foremost is the most important message one could deliver.

I am quite grateful that Japan successfully host this very different OG despite all kinds of difficulties including internal protests and rapidly changing COVID situation. It is not wonderful since there is no spectators but it's respectful to fulfill its commitment to the international society. So I would not ask too much from Japan, on the contrary I am grateful of what they offered.

I am not satisfied with the creepy opening ceremony and I don't like Japanese athletes sometimes over-scored on sports judged by referees. But when it all ends, that feeling is just let go. I began to appreciate that it's quite difficult to host the games with so much pressure and you can't require the host to benefit 0 with so much cost.

So I would like to sincerely thank Japan. It provided a wonderful stage for athletes and provided so much joy, excitement, up and downs for fans. Arigoto Nippon . Lastly hope we can have spectators in Beijing 2022. If so I will wave my hands in TV.

Aleksandra Mirosław in sports climbing - women's speed event.
In Tokyo she was 4th in combined event but she had WR in speed, wasn't able to perform well in boulder and lead though.
In Paris speed will be a seperate event so she is the biggest favourite for gold now.
But a lot of can happen during these 3 years obviously and she will have strong opponents within Polish team as well. Polish girls are very strong in this event.

You are more than welcome here. I am looking forward to that event as well.
My only concern is that our so-called “government” might do something really awful (even more than their actions so far) in the 2 next years, so one or more important countries boycott this WCh. But lets hope this is not happening (it would be very bad for the athletes anyway)

I will plan to attend Paris 2024 as well. I am more interested in the niche sports  does well in (e.g. canoe kayak, waterpolo), attend some of the newer sports, and try to get tickets to one of the big sports (athletics, gymnastics, swimming). Accommodation will be key

Can't wait for 2024, it will be the first time in so long that the events will all happen at a reasonable hour for me, finally! I hope I can go see some events, having the Olympics in France will probably be a once in a lifetime opportunity. No idea which events to prioritize though (NOT breakdance).

Dont know about ESP specifically, but someone wrote here that broadcaster's have exclusivity to the content up to 31 Dec 2021. So they would be fools if they did not keep it until then at least, after they have paid for the exclusivity in the region concerned (Europe, exc UK, FR, and RU in this case)

pdr4332 reacted to Vektor in How many medals do you expect from your Nation at the 2020 Olympics? (Final Version)
lol, I can't believe that I almost got it right.  I projected 6 gold and 19 total medals and we ended up with 6 gold and 20 total medals. I thought that this was a mildly optimistic projection, my realistic projection was 5 gold and 15 total medals, which for me shows that we did really well.

Here's the recap with the results added:

Events where anything other than gold would be a big disappointment (projection: 2 gold / result: 2 gold)
     Swimming, men's 200 fly - GOLD Canoe Sprint, women's K4 500m - GOLD
Events where I am expecting a medal no matter what, close to 50% of them should give us a gold (projection: 2 gold, 3 other medals / result: 2 gold, 4 other medals)
    Fencing, men's team sabre - BRONZE Swimming, men's 100m butterfly - SILVER Canoe Sprint, men's K1 1000m - GOLD, SILVER Canoe Sprint, women's K2 500m - BRONZE Wrestling, men's Greco-Roman 77kg - GOLD
Events where we have a good chance for a medal, I would say that around 10% of them are gold, 40% of them are silver or bronze (projection: 2 gold, 10 other medals / result: 2 gold, 9 other medals)
    Athletics, women's heptathlon - 13th Canoe Sprint, women's K1 200m - 6th Canoe Sprint, men's K1 200m - GOLD Canoe Sprint, women's K1 500m - SILVER Canoe Sprint, women's C2 500m - 5th Fencing, men's individual sabre - GOLD Fencing, men's individual epée - SILVER Fencing, women's individual sabre - 4th Fencing, women's team sabre - 8th Judo, men's 90kg - BRONZE Modern Pentathlon, women's individual - BRONZE Modern Pentathlon, men's individual - 6th Sailing, men's finn - SILVER Shooting, men's 10m air rifle - 5th Shooting, men's 50m rifle 3 pos - 10th Swimming, men's 400m IM - 4th Swimming, women's 400m IM - 5th Swimming, women's 200m fly - 4th Swimming, women's 10km - 4th Swimming, men's 10km - SILVER Water Polo, men's - BRONZE Water Polo, women's - BRONZE Wrestling, men's Greco-Roman 67kg - 12th Wrestling, men's Greco-Roman 87kg - SILVER Wrestling, men's freestyle 65kg - 5th
Events with a small chance for a medal (projection: 0 medal / result: 1 medal, plus a couple of good results)
    Karate, kumite, 75kg - BRONZE Canoe Sprint, men's K2 1000m - 4th Taekwondo, men's 58kg - 5th Judo, women's 52kg - 5th Swimming, men's 4x100m freestyle relay - 5th Wrestling, men's Greco-Roman 97kg - 5th
Events with zero chance for anything (projection: 0 medal / result: 1 completely unexpected 4th place)
    Cycling - Mountain Bike, women's - 4th

Best medal-haul ever for Canada in a non-boycotted summer games, highest placing in the medal table since 1992, first team gold in a summer sport since 1908, two big stars (de Grasse and Warner) winning their first global title... this is definitively on the upper end of what Canada is capable of at the summer Olympics.

I think canoe-kayak will have the same number of events in total, 2 will be cut from sprint but 2 will be added to slalom.
From my point of view, weightlifting is still 10 events too many
In sport climbing, the splitting of speed climbing and lead/boulder climbing is more than welcome
I can just hope break dance is an one off for 2024

Dont get why is so important to reduce athlete numbers. I get the point of not increasing, but why it has to be reduced?
Probably this is one of the many fake, BS activities of the IOC, this time to show that they are actively trying to reduce the cost of the SOG (which is of course not much influenced by + or - 500 athletes)
In my language we call it faux or "ersatz" activity or act, when you do something meaningless or pointless, just with the intention to show the outside world that you are working to address an issue or a problem, or that you care about it.
