Women's Qualification round complete - 36 athletes advancing to semi-finals. 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 x There were a few big named casualties, World Number 10 Gintare Venckauskaite, Number 15 Blanka Guzi, Number 20 Mayan Oliver, Number 21 Malak Ismail and Number 22 Natalia Dominiak all failed to make the cut. -
Thank god for that - makes life so much easier when they're available in single place

BBC coverage keep banging the drum about how this is the most sustainable world championships ever and how the BBC is playing its part in supporting its green agenda - sadly it all rings a bit hollow given they have just flown a new presenter in from Australia. Not exactly burnishing their green credentials

Would be surprised if the likes of Calos Yulo would opt out of the world champs given he would have very good chance of securing Olympic qualification based on his all around ability. -
Track Cycling Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Happy to see that someone at the UCI has figured out how to work the office calculator and China have been credited with the world championship points for the men's team pursuit in the latest release of the world rankings. This takes them up to into the final qualifying spot ahead of Team GB. This should be the last Olympic ranking update until the Nations Cup / Continental Championships kick off next year. -

Men's squad has been announced: James Hall Harry Hepworth Jake Jarman Courtney Tulloch Max Whitlock Fraser and Regini-Moran evidently not back to full strength and given GB have already secured their Paris place, there was no need for them to rush back for this competition. Whilst I don't see Hepworth making the squad for Paris it will be interesting to see how James Hall and Max Whitlock perform because at the moment we have 6 main players on the squad but only 5 places available on the team for Olympics. -
I think they didn't compete because it was just a Grand Prix level event rather than a Grand Slam - they didn't compete in any Grand Prix level events during the first period except for one right at the start of the qualifying period and which ended up being a discard score for them all. In both weight classes, the quotas are already pretty much guaranteed and both athletes are going to be on the IJF list so it will come down to Judo Canada's selection policy which, if I have read correctly, at the moment give the edge to Deguchi (4 points to 1); and Reyes (3 points to 2)
-
Oh I know. Normally I just keep it up until they are reduced to personal insults - that's when you know you've won the argument
-
So by that argument, I assume that you believe that the likes of Femke Bol, Karsten Warholm, Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Nafissatou Thiam must be doping - or is it just athletes/countries that you don't like that you believe are doping?
-
GB's improved performance could also be down to the fact that after their shambolic performance in Atlanta, UK Sport got wise to the fact that they need to be more professional and the Govt introduced the national lottery to help fund elite sport with millions of schmucks spending a pound a week in the hope of becoming a millionaire.
-
Don't think that was the kiss that was the issue as it happened before she had picked up the trophy. The team were congratulated by the Queen and then moved on to Rubiales - who it has to be said, was very "affectionate" with all the squad - but Hermoso was the only one who ended up with his hands on the back of her head and pulled in for full-on lip smacker.
-
Whilst I am more than willing to raise a glass to the success of Team GB so far, I can't help feeling that these positive results are going to be used to paper over the cracks in the management of athletics in UK right now. Putting aside the obvious issues with the selection policies that are in place, we've now got athletes alleging they were blackmailed by our national federation if they weren't willing to be part of a relay squad. The picture of UK athletics over the course of the summer is one of incompetence and indifference to athletes and yet there is a good chance that will all be drowned out by KJT's gold medal. The powers that be within UK athletics have robbed multiple athletes of the opportunity to attend a global championship and ley down an Olympic qualifying time/distance because of some misguided belief that if you're not top 8 in the world, you don't count for anything.
