Well, McKayla Maroney won silver while landing on her ass. It doesn't get any worse than that
Ledeux's final landing was clearly not-gold medal worthy no matter where this event was held.
-
Gu wins gold! Ledeux looks pissed!
-
Nope, that doesn't look good enough from Ledeux with the one ski in the air landing.
-
Whoa! Gu Ailing pulls the rabbit out of the hat!
-
Ledecka 0,76 faster than Hofmeister in qualifying run
-
Yeah, medals pretty much decided already. Looks like another 4th place for
-
Gremaud actually holds the lead after Gu's second jump. I suppose Ledeux won't crash twice so the podium occupants are basically known already?
-
Good second jump from Muir but Gremaud with a huge jump to raise her average.
-
Tess Ledeux takes the early lead in Big Air. Gu Ailing second so I guess the rest can only hope for bronze overall?

I assume even Canadian users here wouldn't have recognized Boyd-Clowes if he walked past them on the street but in 2015 he was forced to start a crowd-funding campaign just to buy plane tickets to attend World or Continental Cups in Europe (he sat out 2014/15 season alltogether). Back then Taylor Henrich was the best Canadian female jumper and even had two World Cup podiums in 2015 but she has retired after 2018 WOG at the age of 23. At least the article predicted that Abigail Strate will be the best among the next generation. Natalie Eilers used to be Canadian #2 but she was displaced by Loutitt before this season.
-
Btw, Washington Post posted a picture of Nina O'Brien's crash and last time I saw a human's leg bend that way was during NFL game so I assume she broke her ankle at the very least. I don't think she makes it back for the start of next season either

The chief women's controller for the event (Agnieszka Baczkowska) said that all DSQ were for too large suits and all of them exceeded the maximum stretch by over 1 cm so it was a big transgression. She also said she was surprised so many teams decided to bend the rules at the Olympics.
She also said they don't control the same things over & over again to avoid being predictable so athletes have to have everything right and don't second guess what parts of their apparel will "never" be checked or sth.

The German coach said after 1st jump that Iraschko, Althaus and Takanashi all had the same suits as in the single's event. Althaus said that she had the feeling that the tech delegate controlled her as long as the delegate was able to find something. I don't know what happened. The only thing being sure is that the controls were conducted differently from all other events before.
Anyone who follows ski jumping knows those tech controls could get weird and FIS always has the last laugh in the end. Something was definitely up and Horngacher might really regret the Willingen witch hunt. I suppose FIS got upset with all the snitching and went nuclear at the WOG of all places. I wonder if this was to stop the top teams from spying on each other.

OK guys, now it's time to ask the obvious question
can someone tell me (as someone who watches Ski Jumping here and there but don't know all the details) what the hell happened ? I read about suitviolation but why we had so many in one competition ? do they had some special rules for this mixed event ? why these girls didn't get disqualified in their individual events if they used the same suit?
DSQ for suits is always a grey area and the unofficial word is that top nation jumpers never get DSQ unless they don't have a chance for a medal anyway. I'd guess someone told the tech delegate (who was a Pole for the women) to play hardball by the rules this time.

Honestly this would have been an amazing result for Canada even without the disqualifications. Beating Czechia and Poland was really impressive for a tiny, underfunded program.
Polish women have taken a massive step backwards under Kruczek in the last two seasons
As for Canada, Boyd-Clowes is a well known stalwart and Soukup is well, in the "someone has to miss the Q cut" category but I really thought Strate & Loutitt are actually older. I was shocked to learn the latter barely turned 18 last month.

C'mon in the final!
-
I'd say Berreiter can still nick it overall.
Can't believe how Taubitz blew that!
-
Big Thunder still exits? Like it would cost too much money to blow it up?

I'm not celebrating until I know he is safe from the suit check room of death.
All DSQ were for women. The men are safe
Kinda best podium of the entire games. This sport really doesn't offer much medal changes outside of the big nations.
I hope and enjoy their five minutes in the sun

Silver medal for
Only their second ski jumping medal after LH gold in 1968 for
-
He's done it!!! wins a OG medal in ski jumping!!!
Bring back Big Thunder!!!!
-
Alright then. Boyd-Clowes needs ca. 98 meters for a shocking Canada medal!
-
Silje Opseth DSQ. Well, they wouldn't have won a medal anyway.
