Theodoros Iakovidis confirmed for men's 96kg.

 

So in the end, Greek weightlifting survives (for now). This was going to be our first time since 1964 not sending anyone in weightlifting but now we can relax for a little until we worry about trying to qualify someone in 2024. Which will be a problem because Iakovidis said he would probably retire after Tokyo.

Our WL federation confirmed this quota and 2 hours later some official sources also reported that Iran most probably will reject it. she had a minor surgery on her hand and not really ready to participate. ( she would finish last in the competition anyway) and beside that Iran has a bad doping record in this sport. and because of that they monitor and test all weightlifters for months before sending them to international competitions. (let alone the Olympics) now they simply have to "trust" her for not using anything while she was out of the national camp.

 

still no confirmation from our NOC, they are probably thinking that having one female weightlifter (even if she finishes last) will be good for developing women's sport here. but then that doping thing is a big deal. despite our terrible doping history we never had someone testing positive during the Olympics (or Asian Games) in past 50 years.

Our local news confirms that  can only send 2 weightlifters instead of 3. I thought something similar to Colombia will happen to us, luckily only 1 quota is taken away. This is way better than having athletes arriving at Tokyo and still worrying whether they are allowed to compete.

That's lucky it could have been 1 or even 0 also. Nonetheless Hoang Thi Duyen is instantly a medal favorite in 59kg, no participation in W 49kg I believe. Kim Tuan is safe for silver / bronze . That's 2 medals whose chances seemed to be over rising again.

I understand from our news that one of our quota is also taken back due to doping related issues so we will be able to have 2 quotas only now. Actually we lost not 1 but 2 quotas bevause we were also going to get Vietnam’s quota in women 49kg. That is sad but nothing to do.
