Oh I didn't see the new list, thanks!

@MHSNDo you think Alex Bellamare has any chance of qualification in 81 kg?

Well this post seems to have aged well

One can argue it can be misused to induce calmness... The mental side is as import as the physical one, and it's easy to forget that the first doping case at the Olympics was a Swedish shooter who took a beer to steady his nerves.

"Performance-enhancing" drug, it certainly is.

Reminds me of the late Canadian snooker player Bill Werbenuik.

Edit

"Werbeniuk was noted for the copious amounts of alcohol he consumed before and during matches – at least six pints before a match and then one pint for each frame. In total, he drank between 40 and 50 pints of lager per day. Doctors advised Werbeniuk to drink alcohol to counteract a familial benign essential tremor. Later in his career he also took propranolol, a beta blocker, to cope with the effects of his alcohol consumption on his heart.

Werbenuik was reported to have successfully claimed the cost of 6 pints of lager before every match as a tax deductible expense. Some of Werbeniuk's most famous feats of drinking include: 76 cans of lager during a game with John Spencer in Australia in the 1970s; 43 pints of lager in a snooker match/drinking contest against Scotsman Eddie Sinclair in which, after Sinclair had passed out following his 42nd pint, Werbeniuk was reported to say "I'm away to the bar now for a proper drink"; 28 pints of lager and 16 whiskies over the course of 11 frames during a match against Nigel Bond, in January 1990 – after which Werbeniuk then consumed an entire bottle of Scotch to "drown his sorrows" after losing the match."

Theodoros Iakovidis confirmed for men's 96kg.

So in the end, Greek weightlifting survives (for now). This was going to be our first time since 1964 not sending anyone in weightlifting but now we can relax for a little until we worry about trying to qualify someone in 2024. Which will be a problem because Iakovidis said he would probably retire after Tokyo.

W87+: :IRI ( :AUS will take :SAM place in top 8 but there is no more Oceania athlete remaining, after :TGA got tripartite)

Our WL federation confirmed this quota and 2 hours later some official sources also reported that Iran most probably will reject it. :d she had a minor surgery on her hand and not really ready to participate. ( she would finish last in the competition anyway) and beside that Iran has a bad doping record in this sport. and because of that they monitor and test all weightlifters for months before sending them to international competitions. (let alone the Olympics) now they simply have to "trust" her for not using anything while she was out of the national camp.

still no confirmation from our NOC, they are probably thinking that having one female weightlifter (even if she finishes last) will be good for developing women's sport here. but then that doping thing is a big deal. despite our terrible doping history we never had someone testing positive during the Olympics (or Asian Games) in past 50 years.

Our local news confirms that :VIE can only send 2 weightlifters instead of 3. I thought something similar to Colombia will happen to us, luckily only 1 quota is taken away. This is way better than having athletes arriving at Tokyo and still worrying whether they are allowed to compete.

That's lucky it could have been 1 or even 0 also. Nonetheless Hoang Thi Duyen is instantly a medal favorite in 59kg, no participation in W 49kg I believe. Kim Tuan is safe for silver / bronze . That's 2 medals whose chances seemed to be over rising again.

I understand from our news that one of our quota is also taken back due to doping related issues so we will be able to have 2 quotas only now. Actually we lost not 1 but 2 quotas bevause we were also going to get Vietnam’s quota in women 49kg. That is sad but nothing to do.

    • about the Olympic qualification   For Olympic qualifying standings, the first tiebreaker is winning percentage over the entire WBC. The Dominican Republic has the edge there after going 4-0 in group play. Canada, Puerto Rico and Venezuela each went 3-1.   The second tiebreaker is head-to-head result (if applicable), followed by runs allowed per recorded defensive out over the entire WBC   good luck if CAN, PUR and VEN all lose in the quarters

    • Yep, if they can take advantage of those cracks maybe, but it's too big of a maybe in my opinion. Our pitching has relied on Caissie, Toro, and Lopez the entire tournament, and I don't see that being enough to match the US's firepower.   Canadians are used to disappointment, there's almost always things that go wrong, and there actually being a chance to qualify for the...
    • That was realistic though, this isn't.   The women were heavy favourites, we did better than expected. The men were favourites with their roster of course, but they dominated that final just unfortunate to be going up against prime Hellebuyck who was a brick wall and of course there were a few questionable calls that were crucial in the end.
