Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Sports Programme Road to LA 2028

This is going a very tricky decision for the ICC.

You can't really use the current world rankings because ranking points will be won or lost against teams that are not eligible for the Olympics.

I think that any country who fails to qualify because will launch an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and probably win.

So here's what I suggest for the six.

1 Possible host country place - USA - but only possible - what you do is recalculate the ICC rankings and take out all points gained against non-Olympic teams.

Then once you done this and taken out non-Olympic countries like West Indies and either England and Scotland then if the USA are in a high enough ranking position they qualify. This position could be as high as 10th or as low as 20th depending on how important the IOC and ICC see their presence in LA.

(I'm assuming that, like in curling and women's soccer Great Britain would nominate either England or Scotland as their official qualifying representatives)

USA are currently 18th

2 2026 World T20 champions

3 and 4 Asia-Pacific qualifying tournament winners and runners-up

5 and 6 Euro-Africa-Americas qualifying tournament winners and runners-up

(7) If the USA don't meet the qualifying standard then a play off between the 3rd place teams in the 2 above categories decides the final qualifiers

The qualifying tournament would be held under IOC eligibility rules not the ICC rules

As someone, who thinks ICC rankings are useless, I would be happy if they are not a criteria for qualification but I think they will have atleast 1 quota via rankings to ensure that the top 3 (India, England and Australia) don't miss out.

Will tennis really have a team event instead of MX or it is just a mistake in the official document? No mention to it in the press realese, nor anything said by ITF... that seems strange

@Dragon says IOC claim that the ITF didn't has decided yet.

Would rather best ball be on day 1 and alternate shots be on day 2, but overall I think this is a good format.

just scores...no direct elimination rounds...meh! :nopompom:

Ya, a 16 team bracket of foursome (personally not a big fan of four ball :P ) would have been ideal. I generally do find matchplay a lot more watcheable than strokeplay.

I'm assuming there are schedueling issues with that, however.

I also prefer foursomes rather than fourballs ;)

maybe they think of scheduling issues, but a 16-team draw means 4 rounds, which isn't impossible to be accomodated in 2, max 3 days* (and there are more than 3 days between the 2 individual tournaments)

*round of 16 in day 1, quarters in the morning of day 2, semis in the afternoon of day 2, finals in day 3 (and pushing the program to the limit, it's also possible to keep the event within 2 days only)

    • I still shocks, that a country of 4-5 million inhabitants? can be a powerhouse in almost every winter sport + handball, football (most recently with Haaland) and athletics: Ingebrigtsen, Warholm, etc. With such a small population, they can't be missing out on any major talent, surely? This must be the best training system in the world...
    • FIFA announced the stadium and time for each match   for  Iran, it will be 2 matches in LA (and not just 1) and 1 in Seattle and luckily we avoided playing in Canada. absolutely nothing against the country, but there are just too many douchebag Iranian groups in Vancouver trying to mix everything with their stupid politics. it's better to stay away from them.   that can happen in US too but less likely. playing in LA is more like playing at home, at least I hope so. 2022 Qatar was a disaster from our point of view, hopefully this one remains only about football.

    • Vladimir Semirunniy dropped a 12:28 in the 10000m B division, which qualifies him for the Olympics as the fastest time this season (with the big asterisk that it was done in a quad start). Must be a real relief for the Polish team given he isn't looking likely to qualify for the 10000m (or the 5000m) by ranking.   Really problematic that they rank pair start and quad start times together, but whatever.   Also, the Wikipedia page for qualification is updated through the second day.
