He was ranked fifth in the world coming into the Olympics and had won a world cup race in Europe. Yeah, but my point is that he won the gold just barely compared to Tretiakov and Yun on their home tracks. The run will end with Yan who is not even safe for the podium, and therefore the "weakest" home contender since Montgomery. Topicmaster1010 3,108 Posted February 11, 2022 #102 Share Posted February 11, 2022 Some very interesting first run results. Rahneva in the lead with Narracott 0.02 behind. Zhao Dan using the home track advantage to get the 3rd fastest run with two Germans behind. On the other hand, the world cup overall winner Bos is in 10th. Also have Flock in 14th and Nikitina in 18th. Also what a difference 4 years can make for the british program.

I think Narracot has to be the favourite at this point, she made an obvious mistake in the middle of her run and would have been first without it. As she showed in run two Bos moving up from 10th to 6th, there's hope. Basically everything is wide open between roughly 2nd and 6th or even 7th/8th. While of course keeping in mind Narracott has a good advantage, but not one that means she can make serious mistakes. Joshi 96 Posted February 11, 2022 #107 Share Posted February 11, 2022 The sunburnt country Australia will win 2 golds okay perhaps 2 medals and one will be 1 gold from sliding events. Who woulda thought??? Ted
OlympicsFan 791 Posted February 11, 2022 #108 Share Posted February 11, 2022 If german women don't win gold and silver/bronze, they should all instantly retire. They clearly had superior material today. Neise would have been in the lead without her big mistakes at the end of run 2, she clearly has the highest ceiling on this track. You really have to thank whoever designed this LONG track, it clearly helps athletes who aren't great at the start. Who woulda thought??? Pretty smart of Australia to focus on technical sports (snowboard, freestyle skiing, bob, skeleton), seems like they "stole" GB's strategy. I think at some point Germany will have to adapt the same strategy. Interestingly neither GB nor Australia were/are remotely competitive in luge.
