Taekwondo Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Recommended Posts

Her host country in the Refugee program was Germany, not Bulgaria.

I dont like those changes AFTER the qualification event. So Bulgaria could send 2 male 2 female to the qualifier and another athlete? Hmh......

A formalization of the rules is really needed.

gotta get rid of that farce named Refugee Team, where actually no athletes are true refugees (especially those involved in the combat sports)

As much as I am a fan of world taekwondo for creating a interesting sport with clear rules and easy to follow for the viewer, I have to say that their qualification system is one of the worst.

Personally I don’t think there should be a limit on the number of athletes who can qualify for a team. Imagine being the 6th ranked fighter in the world and not qualifying because there are 2 other athletes in different weight classes are higher ranked for you.

And this one is a gripe which can be applied to other sports as well. The Individual neutral Athletes are baisically a team, no matter how hard people try to spin it in neutrality. They even have their own flag, so surely these limits on athletes participation should apply to them, but they don’t.

And on a side note their website is appalling.

I see them as two teams competing under the same name. It's no different than if multiple suspended nations competed under the Olympic flag.

It seems Bianca Cook hasn't given up on getting to Paris and will be representing :IOM going forward. By making the switch, it seems she will be eligible to compete at the European Champs with an ultimate goal of being able to do enough to persuade the :GBR selectors to pick her over Rebecca McGowan.

Maybe she can represent :MDA in LA?

She does have close connections to the country, being married to a very famous Moldovan Olympic athlete.

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
