It was more to do with FIFA not allocating a direct WC slot to Oceania, as a result
had to qualify to WCs via playoffs against stronger South American/North American countries.
Their football federation believed and rightly so, Aus has a better chance of qualifying through the AFC slot allocations.
Ofcourse AFC offers better competition at both club & international level as compared to Oceania.
Well for the 2026 expanded WC , FIFA has finally allocated a direct Slot for OFC.
