QUALIFICATION UPDATE Updated after the official confirmation today that triathletes Carolyn Hayes and Russell White have qualified for the Olympics and have been selected for Team Ireland. At the Irish Performance Meet in Dublin, Ellen Walshe became the latest swimmer to achieve the OQT standard with her new national record in the women's 200m individual medley. Her selection is not yet certain though as the Swim Ireland selection policy stated that only swimmers who went within 1.5% of the OQT standard at the nationals in April would be eligible to qualify from this meet. However, it is most likely they won't stick strictly to that policy as Ellen went comfortably inside the FINA A time today. Either way she is eligible for a quota until Swim Ireland says otherwise so we will put her into the qualified basket for now. That means we now have broken the 100 mark (!!!) in terms of athlete quotas (54 men and 46 women) with representatives in 56 events, across 20 different sports. Ellen Walshe just qualified in the women's 200m individual medley with a time of 2:12.02 mins inside the OQT of 2:12.56 mins. Wow!! @Oldira

So with Oman getting a wildcard in men’s -81kg I think that means no quota for Ireland after all?

I have also reinstated Heike Holstein in Dressage who receives an individual quota spot after the withdrawal of the team (pending appeal). If he didn't communicate his intention to withdraw the team to the athletes affected, then that's a disgrace and shame on him. Not surprising though, sadly.... these sorts of controversies are just so common that it's not shocking any more. It's just a lack of human decency if he didn't bother to let Rawlins and Connor, and Holstein for that matter, know what was coming... and they should have been allowed to make a case as well. Doubt much will come of their appeals, sadly.

I see a very important debate ongoing but can we all focus on the important issue here.... will Ireland get a weightlifting quota? That is what I want to know

I would like to see Brendan Boyce (men's 50km walk) and Natalya Coyle (women's modern pentathlon) given the honour. Both are long serving members of the team and have been quietly doing us proud over many years. For Brendan it will probably be his final Olympics as the men's 50km walk won't be on the programme in Paris 2024 and for Natalya, this could be her last Olympics too... she has been a wonderful servant to the Irish team, finishing 9th at London 2012 and 6th in Rio 2016, a huge achievement for an Irish pentathlete. Those would be my picks if I could make the choice but it would also be cool to see brother-sister boxing duo Aidan and Michaela Walsh. What a moment it would be for them and their family. I also agree with @mpjmcevoy that it would also be lovely to see the captains of the women's hockey team and men's rugby sevens team jointly being given the honour.

The Irish equestrian team for the Olympics has been announced and the big news is that the dressage team has been withdrawn At most they can only hope to receive a reallocated quota in individual dressage but it's not certain either. We were never going to trouble the medals anyway but it's sad that our historic first team dressage qualification has come to this.
