Yeah, China and Russia dropped the ball a bit, but none of the other nations took advantage of it.

I mostly look at recent world/continental results and world rankings for some sports while taking into consideration the qualification process. Naturally some sports will be more strict than others, based on the data that I have. In terms of wrestling I too was surprised that Iran didn't have an athlete in each male event, I guess they had (relatively) poor recent showings, I have no issue with adding them all, I was mostly waiting to see your reaction
 
I agree in basketball that China is the favourite, but with other nations competing things could get quite messy in the rankings.
 
For sailing, it more has to do with the weakness of Asia in Men's Finn. Iran's sailor (Ahmad Ahmadi) was third among Asian nations at the 2018 Worlds and one of those nations was Japan who is already qualified, the other is from Hong Kong. Of course, I suspect China will show up at the continental qualifier and take the quota, but if they don't I suspect Hong Kong and Iran will fight for that quota.

Luxembourg and Saudi Arabia should have a chance in team dressage and team jumping, respectively.
 
Additionally, Hong Kong stands a decent chance in both team and individual jumping since Australia and Japan are already qualified. Philippines and Sri Lanka should have a chance in individual jumping, just like Syria and Morocco from the other group.

On paper Angola is the favourite, but it only takes one bad match to get eliminated. Usually Tunisia has a good chance for the upset, but they haven't looked too great. Senegal has had a great tournament so far.
 
Due to how the scheduling of the qualification system the winner here will be the first African nation to qualify to the Olympics

I don't think it's in the IOC's place to demand which nations are allowed to be part of a sports federations. These are separate entities. If a sport wants to allow all 50 United States states to compete separately then let them. My only concern is that the qualification process must limit the amount of athletes that attempt to qualify if other nations are also limited. Which for the most part they do for Great Britain (see curling or rugby sevens).
 
For territories, the ones that do compete were rather lucky as they essentially got grandfathered in. To me, there's no reason why Aruba gets to compete, but not Curacao. For nations with limited recognition things get a bit grey. Where do you draw the line? Palestine, Kosovo and Taiwan (via loophole) are all recognized by a large portion of the world. Western Sahara also has a large chunk, but not enough sporting recognition.

To be fair these athletes would have all been able to qualify if continental quotas didn't exist. There are 29 quota places for each event...

Not everyone can afford to go to Europe/Asia to compete. If you look at their performances here, it's consistent with what you'd expect a top 30 athlete would get. Is there a chance that they would miss out in a non-continental qualification system? Perhaps, but you could say the same about anyone who isn't consistently in the top 15.

is in a good position to win a medal in men's combined cycling. Currently second with one event to go.

Canada still has a few more medal opportunities though it looks like we'll finish without gold for the second games in a row. We should still win the most medals out of nations without a gold medal (especially if Brazil wins gold in futsal)

Too bad cycling isn't separate, Luxembourg could have won medals. Hopefully the mountain biking athlete doesn't weigh him down too badly.
