The Canadian Swimming Trials is set to begin tomorrow March 28th and will last until April 2nd. This competition will decide who will compete at the World Championships later this year. The selection priority is as follows... 1) Swimmers achieving the FINA A standard in Olympic events (max 2 per event). 2) In the men's & women's 100m freestyle & women's 200m freestyle the top 4 swimmers will be selected (if not already qualified above). 3) In the men's 200m freestyle the top 4 swimmers will be selected (if not already qualified above) if their combined time is less than 7:14.18 4) In Olympic events where no swimmer qualified above, the top swimmer will qualify if they are within 1% of the FINA A standard. 5) For the women's 4x100m medley relay, should the 100m winner of one of the strokes is not qualified they will be given a spot 6) For the men's 4x100m medley relay, should the 100m winner of one of the strokes is not qualified they will be given a spot if the combined time of the four strokes is less than 3:36.16 7) High Performance Director selections Criteria 7 is in place for athletes who do not compete (Oleksiak or Ruck), selection for the 50m back/breast/fly events or if the director feels additional relay athletes deserve to attend. Should Oleksiak/Ruck wish to compete they cannot bump someone who already qualified.

Sad to hear, but also not entirely surprised. Ruck was hyped to be a big thing in swimming where she could win individual medals at the World/Olympics, but she's mostly been an important depth swimmer for our relays. Hope she can train in mental strength. With her out and Sanchez changing nationalities our 4x100m freestyle relay will probably not medal. I guess we'll see how the trials look for us.

Nice find. With Australia and New Zealand qualifying naturally, all she needs to do is have a World (not Olympic) ranking of 180 or higher by the deadline.

Unfortunately they did not survive the cross-country portion. Colombia has another event in May so I can see him trying again. After that he'll have to travel (possibly to Argentina). While the individual quotas aren't free there isn't a lot of competition, assuming Brazil and Canada don't choke at the Pan American Games.

Now that all of the eligible dressage events for March have been completed let's take a look at the status for nations with team quotas. As a reminder, nations which qualify a team quota have until the end of the year to get at least three athletes with the certificate of capability (2 MER results) or else they lose the team quota. Here are the status for nations which have qualified a team quota Australia - 0/3 Denmark - 3/3 France - 3/3 Germany - 3/3 Great Britain - 3/3 Netherlands - 3/3 Sweden - 3/3 United States - 3/3 Unsurprisingly the top nations already have at least three athletes with the certificate. Things have been quiet on the Australian side with only a handful even having their first MER result. There's still a long time before the end of the year and I suspect Australia will be fine. The edge cases won't show up until after the regional qualifiers. Out of curiosity here are the nations with at least one athlete with a certificate of capability (outside of the teams listed above) where they could compete at the Olympics. Group A - Group B - Group C - Group D - Group E - Group F - Group G - I'm just realizing how light Group A is. 5/9 nations have already qualified a team and Iceland is non-existent. Should Finland get one of the Group A/B team quotas that essentially gives Ireland and Norway a free quota to compete. However, when that happened in 2020 Norway declined the quota. Group F has some work to do as do the Pan American nations, though Canada and Ecuador at least have one MER result.

The alternatives aren't great either. She either bumps out her sister or she has to defeat another top athlete

Australia and Canada having a stronger women's team relative to their men probably contributes to the European imbalance. Those two nations plus the United States don't leave much for the rest of the world. Throw in a few individuals from China, Japan and South Africa and Europe doesn't have too many opportunities.

Good to know. Assuming Defay knows about this requirement, I imagine she's taking a trip to Australia next month regardless of her recovery.
