Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi and United States’ Kirra Pinkerton were crowned champions today at the World Surfing Games. The event was held at Huntington Beach, United States from September 16th to September 24th 2022. 2020 Olympic silver medalist Igarashi had a perfect competition where he finished first in all eight rounds on route to winning gold. In the final, he finished ahead of Indonesia’s Rio Waida and Australia’s Jackson Baker whom won silver and bronze. Pinkerton had a similar experience, never being relegated to the second chance repechage bracket as she finished either first or second in all of her heats. In the final, her score of 13.63 barely edged out France’s Pauline Ado’s score of 13.00. The bronze medal was won by Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons. The event doubled as the first opportunity for nations to qualify to the 2024 Olympics. The highest ranked nation from the men’s and women’s team points ranking qualified a spot to the games. Up to three surfers contribute to their nation’s ranking based on the placing they achieved with the winner getting 1000 points, second receiving 860 points, third obtaining 730 points and so on. Buoyed by their individual championship title, the winner of the team points competition was Japan for the men and the United States for the women. The Olympic quota is awarded to the nation and it is up to the respective National Olympic Committee to choose which athlete will compete. As a reminder, despite the 2022 World Surfing Games occurring first, it is actually lower on the quota hierarchy which could have some implications. Should the nations which won a quota today win a third quota from the team points ranking at the 2024 World Surfing Games, the quota won here will be reallocated to the second-place nation, specifically the United States for the men and Australia for the women. The next opportunity for surfers to qualify to the Olympics will be at the 2023 World Surfing Games. -

If they finish 1st or 2nd they will qualify or if wins, they automatically qualify. The only way or qualifies would be if they win and finishes 3rd or 4th. has no chance for the Olympic quota.

In the women's event, after repechage 9, advance to the next round while finishes 8th and finishes 7th. Australia is in a very good position where they can win the Olympic quota without winning the event.

In the men's event, after repechage 11, advance to the next round while finishes 8th and finishes 7th. All nations now have one athlete remaining. and wins if they finish first though they have chances to win if they finish second or third. For or to win, they must finish first and must finish third or worse. Likewise for to win, they must finish first and must finish fourth or worse and must finish third or worse. winning greatly helps and to win the Olympic quota.

The fight for the Olympic quota for the women's event will be interesting. and both have two surfers remaining and can win the quota without winning the overall event. If or wins, would need a 2nd and 4th while needs a 2nd and 7th (or better) to win the quota. only chance at winning would be if also finished in second (Peru has no chance at winning the quota).

Yeah, is the big favourite for the Olympic quota. Should one of their surfers win the event, they automatically qualify. They are also guaranteed the quota should they finish second and fourth with their two surfers (it's less strict if doesn't win or doesn't finish 1st and 3rd with its two surfers). As mentioned before is mathematically eliminated while and need favourable results (mostly, losing both athletes early).

In the women's event, after repechage round 7, advance to the next round while finish joint 15th and finish joint 13th. Not a good round for France, losing 2/3 surfers. Australia remains as the only nation with three surfers.

In the men's event, after repechage round 9, advance to the next round while are eliminated and finish joint 11th. Big loss to Japan as their chances to finish atop the men's team points rankings have taken a hit.

Not sure why they would bring cost as a reason. The 5km and 10km courses are there, it's just more laps (yes sometimes they use a slightly longer course, but if the cost of some extra buoys and officials is really too much, just use the same course). It would be like cutting the 10,000m in athletics and citing costs as a reason. Personally I feel participation is at an okay level, definitely not enough to be considered for the Olympics, but enough for World Championships. Especially since it's at the same level of some diving and artistic swimming events.

For the women' s event advanced to round 6 and like the men will not finish any lower than 6th. have been placed into the repechage, starting in round 8.

Crazy tactics going down in the first women's heat of round 5. Bonvalot essentially used her priority to prevent Fitzgibbons from getting a second run, causing her to drop down to the repechage while her compatriot, Hopkins got penalized due to getting in the way of Rosas who had priority.

Now that we are left with 12 men and 16 women we can take a closer look at the Olympic quota race. As a reminder the quotas are awarded to the highest ranking nation in the team points rankings (please note the 2022 Games have a lower priority than the team ranking of the 2024 Games so there's a chance the quota may be retroactively reallocated to second place). On the men's side we have eight nations with at least one active surfer, . With that said, and are also mathematically eliminated. and to a lesser extent likely needs results to go their way, even if they win the individual title. On the women's side we have ten nations with at least one active surfer, . As with the men, and are mathematically eliminated. With one remaining athlete, will have it tough and will definitely need results to go their way along with winning the individual event, especially since and have three surfers still in play and the two surfers from and are still in the main bracket.

They also have a woman in the top 16. Pan American nations seem to have the most depth in this sport.

Men's Surfing Update (Halfway through Day 6) All three Brazilian men are out of the main bracket. They will have to make due in the repechage knowing any 3rd/4th place finish will result in an elimination. Athletes in Main Round 6 - Athletes in Repechage Round 7 - Athletes in Repechage Round 8 - (plus six athletes from round 7) Repechage Rounds 7 and 8 are scheduled for today, we will be left with 12 athletes by the end of the day.

Good, that makes us getting to the quarterfinals a lot more likely. Of course, we'd like to avoid finishing fourth in the group
