  4. no surprise, they have to allocate the Wild Cards first. WKF still didn't even announce the Continental quotas yet, I was expecting that today though. the deadline is 16 June. so two more days left. but keep in mind reallocated quotas are never a sure thing. I'm not even 100% sure about the Continental quotas I posted earlier. let alone reallocated Tripartite Committee quotas. but I read the rules so many times and explained everything in details, I still think she will get the quota. that part was interesting in his instagram, I like to see her reaction when/if she hears the news. after reading that post I really hope she does.

This seems like a pretty impressive result: https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/summer/aquatics/water-polo/canada-water-polo-world-super-league-final-preview-1.6065521 Not sure if Russia sent their A team but they beat Canada when they met during the last World Championships.

In judo we should have four ranked athletes out of the 6, with Valois Fortier just missing out due to injury. What this means is, all it takes is a 1-2 wins to make the quarterfinals and a guaranteed medal round bout.

  18. 99.9% the team would be: Jessica Rossi, Silvana Stanco (women's Trap) Mauro De Filippis (men's Trap) Chiara Cainero, Diana Bacosi (women's Skeet) Gabriele Rossetti, Tammaro Cassandro (men's Skeet) the mixed Trap team obviously has not been decided yet, since it's clear that the De Filippis & Stanco duo is not performing well right now because of Stanco poor condition, but at the moment Jessica Rossi is stuck on her position, not to shoot together with her former husband for any reason (still, the federation is trying to convince her to make her mind up and shoot the Olympic event together with De Filippis)...

    1 point
  37. Yes, she was really tired. Now she needs to focus on her preparation for the Olympics and no matter what happens there, she will be part of history forever. It was a long day with tons of inquiries and an overall sluggish performance by the judges, partially because of those very same inquiries. The judging panel seemed to be completely lost sometimes and most of the inquiries were accepted. Judging rhythmic gymnastics is one of the most stressful activities one could volunteer to do, but at the same time I wonder if it's not time to completely ban judges from the same continent from judging a continental competition. Now, about the Olympic qualification system, it was a total mess. There a lots of complaints about which judges were attributed to each function, since the D3 panel is one that could completely change the outcome of a competition depending on who is judging. I won't get into details, but there are Brazilians accusing Mexico of manipulating scores in individual competition, and there are Mexicans accusing Brazil of manipulating scores in the group competition. In special, one of the accounts I follow on Twitter is a battlefield right now with tons of nasty comments, and this really makes me sad because, in all honesty, people should be celebrating Rut Castillo's achievement instead of exchanging accusations. I'm super happy for her, she was superb, she didn't have a single bad moment during qualifications and she deserved the Olympic qualification. It was the performance of a lifetime, yet people seem to be ignoring that. Anyway, I want to wrap it up by congratulating Sol Fainberg too for two medals today. The last medal earned by Argentina was 20 years ago, so Sol made history here and she deserves to be praised and remembered too. @mrv86and my Mexican friends here, congratulations for the historic achievement and the best of luck in Tokyo. If Rut finishes 22nd or better, she will have the best performance of a Latin American gymnast in the history of the Olympic Games and I'll be cheering for her.

  38. That is good news for our Greek friend @Makedonas. Hopefully WKF will confirm it tomorrow.

  39. I believe WKF will announce the Continental quotas tomorrow but I double checked everything, I think these guys are going to qualify but this is not official until WKF confirms it Men Kata: Adnane El Hakimi 67: Kalvis Kalnins 75: Yahiro Tsuneari & Abdalla Abdelaziz +75: Brian Irr & Daniyar Yuldashev Women Kata: Alexandrea Anacan & Maria Dimitrova 55: Radwa Sayed & Bettina Plank 61: Alexandra Grande & Rozita Alipour +61: None ================== so we have 4 spots available for Tripartite invitation. but athletes have to be inside top 50 in the World Ranking. Eligible for women's +61kg: (2 quotas available) Marina Rakovic Eligible for men's kata: Sayed Mohammed Al-Mosawi Eligible for men's 67kg: Emil Pavlov Nenad Dulovic Abdullah Shaaban Orges Arifi ================== per rules if they can't allocate wild cards I assume that means they will award those quotas to NOCs without a single quota in Karate. because it doesn't say "not already represented in that category" since there are 2 wild cards available in women's +61kg and only one athlete is eligible to take that. I think that means one will be reallocated at least. the following athletes are best ranked in those categories from NOCs with zero quotas in Karate Women's +61kg: Eleni Chatziliadou Miroslava Kopunova * Chatziliadou should qualify anyway. Kopunova goes only if Montenegro doesn't get that Wild Card. Men's kata: Sayed Mohammed Al-Mosawi * This Kuwaiti guy is the next best athlete (from an NOCs already represented) and he is also the only athlete here eligible for the Wild Card. I beleive one way or another he will take that spot. Men's 67kg: Camilo Velozo * highly unlikely because 4 athletes are eligible for the Wild Card

  41. sad to be said, but this farce is the perfect end of a crazy, completely wrong and messed up qualification procedure... WKF did everything to justify their exclusion just after the Tokyo Olympics... they wanted Kata in, sacrifying 2 weight classes for each gender in Kumite, they accepted to have only an odd number of athletes per event (10) when normally we have more than 100 competitors in each class at the world champs, they put on a shameful and not understandable (and even prone to manipulation) qualification system, they chose the more than controversial round robin system for the final phase of the one and only global qualification tournament and finally, this one... with all the love I feel for the sport, this is just unacceptable and they deserve to be kicked out from the next Games... I truly hope they would eventually understand all of their mistakes and find the way to comeback with a better and fair product in the future, but I fear that's almost impossible with such kind of officials running the WKF... right now, I'm excited for the opportunity to watch the Olympic tournament, but at the same time I'm really sad for the poor management of all this and the consequential lack of perspective in the next future...

  42. He must have assumed qualification because he was ahead of the Oceanian continental representative. Pretty embarrassing.

  43. are qualified even before the last round that also means we will have the full list of continental quotas for women's events Oceania: Anacan (Kata - Rank 9) Africa: Sayed (55kg - Rank 11) America: Grande (61kg - Rank 9) Asia: Alipour (61kg - Rank 6) Europe: Plank (55kg - Rank 14) Pan-Am last quota: Dimitrova (Kata - Rank 11) 2 wild cards will be avaible in +61kg but only is eligible for that. that means even if MNE takes that Wild Card, will take the unused TC quota. I will double check everything later today. but that's my understandings from the rules. of course I might be wrong completely.

  44. it seems there is still a way for Eleni Chatziliadou to qualify if both Italy and Egypt qualify here (whcih is very likely) , there will be 2 Wild Cards available in this weight but only 1 athlete in eligible for that (from Montenegro) rules say Quirici is next , and Eleni is right after her. so one of them will take that reallocated quota. id Quirici qualifies here. there is a very good chance for Greece to have her in Tokyo @Makedonas

  46. Thank you! Prior to the beginning of the event, I thought Brazil would qualify an individual and Mexico would qualify the group. Then Rut Castillo had the best competition of her life and the Mexican group did not qualify -- even though their level is still fantastic -- and everything I thought I knew about gymnastics is a lie now. I seriously hope the Mexican group doesn't feel discouraged by this result. This is one of the best groups in the world, period. I think that the five balls routine is still not as mature as it could have been, and it hurt the group's chances a little bit, but as the (very unprofessional) Brazilian commentator mentioned, 2024 will be this group's time to shine. Also, I hope Mexicans realize how monumental it is for Mexico to qualify in rhythmic gymnastics for the very first time. Brazil has never qualified an individual, at least not in the "true" sense. All of our individual performances at the Olympics resulted from invitations. Also, it is also a huge achievement not to qualify through a naturalized individual. Of course, it's okay to qualify through someone who went through the process of naturalization. I'm not judging this. But qualifying an individual born and raised in Mexico, who trained in Mexico, in this sport, is absolutely incredible. Kudos to Mexico and to Rut Castillo!

  47. Congratulations Brazil You deserve to be in Tokyo, your women were better today and even if it’s a deep lose to remain at home, I’m sire that unlike the Americans you actually have the level to upset “major” teams. Best wishes for your group in Tokyo.

  49. The International Olympic Committee announced the Refugee Olympic Team for Tokyo 2020 on Tuesday, and as a connoisseur of multi-sports games, I found myself curious as to the multi-sports games credentials of the athletes selected for the team. I began my quest for knowledge by consulting an archive of multi-sports games results dating from the early 2000s to the present. While the search itself took a few hours, having to comb through results of various multi-sports games, it did produce some interesting factoids about a few members of the Refugee Olympic Team. The first “hit” in the database was for athletics participant, Dorian Keletela. Keletela ran as a representative of the host country, Republic of Congo, back at the 2015 African Games. He was entered into the 100m and clocked a time of 10.68 in the heats. He failed to advance out of the heats, thus ending his pursuit of gold. This was also his only recorded participation at a multi-sports games. The second athlete to pop up during the search was Wessam Salamana. Salamana competed in boxing at the 2010 Asian Games as a representative of the Syrian Arab Republic. Salamana actually enjoyed relative success at the Games, beating opponents from Timor-Leste, Republic of Korea, and Bhutan on his way to earning a bronze medal. In fact, his only loss came in the semifinals when he was defeated by the eventual gold medalist from Thailand. The 2010 Asian Games would mark Salamana’s only participation at a multi-sports games, but he’ll definitely be hoping to relive his time on the podium at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games. The next athlete to appear in the database also registered a start for the Syrian Arab Republic. Ahmad Badreddin Wais competed for the country in cycling at the 2018 Mediterranean Games. He recorded results in both the road race and time trial. In the road race, Badreddin Wais finished in 47th place and outside the time limit. However, he faired much better in the time trial placing 16th out of 20 riders, only 2:55 behind the winner of the event. He will likely be hoping for a similar performance in the time trial during the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Perhaps the most prolific multi-sports games athlete on the Refugee Olympic Team is Javad Mahjoub. Mahjoub competed for the Islamic Republic of Iran at both the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games. His performances in Judo at both Games were full of ups-and-downs. At the 2010 Asian Games he managed to win his first match, before subsequently losing two matches, including one in the repechage round. He faired slightly better at the 2014 Asian Games, qualifying for the bronze medal match after losing in the semifinal stage. Unfortunately, he finished the competition in 5th place after a loss in the bronze medal match. He will definitely be hoping for improved results at Tokyo 2020. The last athlete to appear in the database was Cyrille Fagat Tchatchet II. Tchatchet II participated in weightlifting at the 2014 Commonwealth Games representing the country of Cameroon. He managed a very respectable result at the Games finishing his event in 5th place ahead of 15 other lifters. In total, he managed to lift 315kg during the -85kg competition. The 2014 Commonwealth Games would also mark the end of his multi-sports games journey until it was announced he made the Refugee Olympic Team for Tokyo 2020. In total, these five athletes represent only a small part of the Refugee Olympic Team. However, these five athletes also show that the Refugee Olympic Team is not to be taken lightly in Tokyo. While they might not be favorites for medals, they are experienced competitors at this level, and will be ready to give it their all in Tokyo. For those who missed the announcement of the Refugee Olympic Team, a full list of the athletes selected can be found here.
