Artistic Gymnastics Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

The 4 athletes per team makes it hard for specialists to qualify. Though I think Downie would have had a decent chance at qualifying regardless if given a normal chance.

It's almost nonsense for every single team to focus on the all-arounders. It *only* makes sense for :USA:RUS:CHN in women's gymnastics, and :JPN:CHN:RUS in men's gymnastics. No other team could seriously challenge for a team medal, realistically, at this point. It's illogical to choose an all-arounder with average/good scores which wouldn't be enough to qualify for the event finals just because the nation wants to finish 4th-8th in the team competition, instead of choosing someone who could win an individual medal.

Seriously, how come British Gymnastics seriously believe they can defeat Russia and China with Morgan and Kinsella? With all due respect, they can't even compare. They should have picked Downie because she had a real shot at an individual medal.

There's always a chance that one of them has a bad day, look at what happened to China at the 2019 Worlds and with only four athletes competing any mistake will have a larger effect.

I think it comes down to the big nations just not holding the apparatus events in high regard. They see it as a way to inflate their medal count, not something they are trying to actively get.

There might also be funding issues

The GB team finishing top 6 might be worth to the federation than apparatus medals

No information here, but it may be a reason

This is the most insane decision I've witnessed in my life. British Gymnastics could realistically walk away without medals this time. It would be quite shocking. I hate their choice for the men's team, and the women's team is even worse.

I mean, the Gadirovas are great gymnasts, but not exactly medal threats as much as Becky would have been. Morgan and Kinsella have no medal chances at all. I might be wrong, of course, but right now I just can't see it.

British Gymnastics is falling apart so not that surprising to get no medals. It be a big funding cut through if it does which might wel, wipe out the last twenty years of progress and the legacy of Beth, Louis and Max and all the other medalists.

The organization deserves to have it's funding wiped out. The athletes don't.

Sad news.

:ARG Martina Dominici has tested positive for a banned substance during the Pan American Championships.

She will probably miss Tokyo and lose the medals she earned at the Pan Am Champs. I'll have to check whether :ARG will still be able to qualify another gymnast to Tokyo via World Championships. If this is not possible, then I believe :GRE Argyro Afrati will qualify to Tokyo because :GEO Maria Kharenkova will probably refuse the quota since she's recovering from injury.

I checked the results from the 2019 World Championships and :ARG Abigail Magistrati is in qualifying position way ahead of :GEO and :GRE. We'll see if FIG will allow Magistrati to qualify instead. I see no reason why they wouldn't, and even on their website there's an FAQ document stating that as long as a gymnast is in qualifying position, the nation could theoretically pick this gymnast if the one who qualified ahead of him/her is injured, or unable to compete.
