Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 News

Recommended Posts

Without trying to be shot or something, so treading very carefully: I can't say I am entirely unhappy with certain Russian and Belarussian athletes being allowed to compete in Paris under a neutral flag and when fulfilling certain individual criteria.

The entire situation is a massive hot mess and it is going to be utterly impossible to agree on which one solution is the best thing, but this one seems at the very least slightly acceptable (and better than both excluding every single Russian and Belarussian athlete no matter what or letting every single one in).

"Ukraine had threatened to boycott the Games if the ban was not upheld but Ukraine's sports minister Vadym Huttsait told Reuters in July it could drop that threat if Russian and Belarusian athletes were made to compete under a neutral flag"

No clearly the water sport coalition will form a boycott. Say goodbye to sailing, canoeing, rowing, swimming, 1/3 of the triathlon and the 3000m steeplechase :p

On a positive note, diving will become the most popular event as the athletes jump into a vat of salsa.

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
