I thought De Grasse hadn't got qualifying standard for 100m?

Probably world rankings quota somehow

Hmmm - he's shown as 103rd on race to Budapest site so would need a heck of a lot of folk to withdraw.

@Rafa Maciel @intoronto I believe World Athletics can invite athletes to complete in disciplines, so I'm pretty sure he got wildcarded in. But I'm not completely sure.

Canada seems to have included several unqualified athletes at the moment, waiting for potential reallocations.

None of the three heptathletes is currently in for example, and they're even pretty far from qualifying spots.

Don't nations have a few quotas they can use to enter athletes that normally wouldn't qualify?

Only if they have no qualified athlete in the respective gender.

This is all pretty weird

Canada is selecting athletes who aren’t qualified (or close to qualifying)

GB aren’t selecting athletes who are qualified

I think the only nation who might be able to pick multiple wildcards is us. I have seen it reported that we are expected to enter around 45 athletes, and that's only possible with some wildcards for the host nation.

Btw, it looks like I will be there for the entire first weekend. Should be plenty enough to experience the Worlds with events like the men's 100m, hammer throw, shot put, and the heptathlon. I will watch the rest of the Worlds on TV.

The biggest ever Irish team (23, could rise) has been announced. Our last 3 medals have been in walking and we've never had a bronze medal. 4 gold, 2 silver

Adeleke and Mageean can win medals if they have the race of their lives and others don't.

    • Yeah. It was pretty bad that they cancel the contract with the original creative director after 7 months of work. I feel like politics, in this particular context of the changing of prime minister and the cabinet, may had caused changes in organizational decisions regarding the Sea Games including the direction of the opening ceremony.
    • That's what I figured.  Wouldn't be a proper lead up to an Olympics without some media-fueled fearmongering.
