SalamAkhi reacted to ChandlerMne in Athletics 2023 Discussion Thread
Just a reminder. NATO started brutal campaign of bombing Yugoslavia in 1999, today is 24th "anniversary".
I wonder how Totallympics users would react in these days, would they condemn civilian victims and protect human rights...
I faced those times personally, banning of Yugoslavia athletes in 1992-1995 likewise.
Every time i will say - let the athletes compete, as long as they take neutral stance.
I dont have simpathy for Russia but this level of xenophobia and hatred is indeed shocking.

So no more freedom of opinion ?
"Are you unconditionally against the invasion" ? "Yes of course (not at all in fact, what are you gonna do ? Torture me ?)".
What about non-Russians/Belarussians possibly in favor of it too ? Are we implementing a kind of "Freedom Pass" ? "I see you've not provided any position on this matter on Instagram, please proceed or we shall consider you pro-Russian".

Should be the 8 from Tokyo + Ireland and Japan.

Same in France. No lol just kidding of course it doesn't, we rely on sheer luck to grab some talents in individual sports (like Mathilde Gros, former basket-ball player, detected when she tried a watt bike for fun).
Paris 2024 here we come.
Canada does the same with the RBC Training Ground.

We know Duplantis was not there, no need to remind it every 30s.
As we say here "les absents ont toujours tort", congrats to the winner.

France in a medal position after 6 laps out of 8, who would have thought ? 4th at best but

Filip Fjeld Andersen out of the WCH because of covid positive test... would you believe, apparently it is still a thing

Thea Lafond is a triple-jumper.
Unequal chances in this lot :
also has Lana Pudar (Women's 100/200m Butterfly) and, though a long shot now, Amel Tuka (Men's 800m).
is a fair bet. Let's see how Alfred does in Budapest first.
is a decent one. Probably less likely now than it was a few years back but McMaster remains one of the best. Problems are : he's struggling with injuries, and the competition will not allow him any leeway.
alright. But Gega is not that young though she's at her best at the moment. Women's 3000m steeple is usually quite open when it comes to big competitions, but she'll have a hard time getting a medal.
Others are highly unlikely.

Great showing from Maya Cloetens nearly getting points in a sprint with 8/10 on her debut ...

Dude, winning relay golds with Norway is like a German winning in luge, nobody cares.
Also considering how far back was Boe after Oberhof your point is off track.

I was so wrong
Very very impressive indeed on the skis, and above all her shooting may not be as erratic as it could. Didn't see her prone but 5/5, 36s, that's fair enough. Then the standing, with three mistakes of course but look at how she managed to put the last two, in 31s total which is quite decent.
Will be very interesting to see her in a peloton (or alone then) and shooting in confrontation, but this performance is encouraging.
Also really exciting as for the skiing abilities of the young IBU Cup guns

Xandra Velzeboer has just OBLITERATED the 500m WR by half a second
41.936 -> 41.416
And the times overall aren't this good, she's really standing out on her own. Her start is not particularly strong, I guess she could take a second off it in a mixed race.

This is a very poor move and will create a further gap between the top nations and the rest.
Even if we assume the Challenger Series will have a proper schedule (say 6 stops), funding for the national teams will be a big issue. Some of the core teams are already struggling and it will be more so because nobody wants to heavily fund a "division II" team.

Felicitations to Mathilde Gros - six years after that mad-fast flying 200 junior record, she's come of age.
Winning on home soil in the next Olympic velodrome isn't a bad place to win your first rainbow jersey.

So is Olympic runner-up Olena Starikova .
Surprisingly so Emma Hinze only managed the 6th time of the qualifying round, not that it would take the favorite status away from her but the title is not awarded yet.
I would give Van Riessen the edge over Grabosch.

There is a misunderstanding here. The so-called challengers are the minnows, while those who can cause an upset are the real "challengers" as we may understand it.

I'm surprised to see the women's team sprint for the Netherlands is not projected to qualify yet? They were second in the recent european championship.
