They couldn't nominate Kopecký, he has not received an invite. I know they did not reject it because it would have been transfered to Gletty, next in line, who hasn't been selected either.

Yeah, I know. Kopecký is now 3rd in the line and may be nominated if somebody withdraws from the WCH. I know, it would have to be at least 3 decathletes. He is the lowest but others surely may be nominated. When Bárta would be on a waiting list. Rest would normally compete.

Cool, so World Athletics has created a system that doesn’t necessarily rank runners on best performance outright (since they factor in field strength, location, etc.), which has also apparently resulted in countries not sending “the best ranked” athletes under said system.

Honestly, the Russia crisis, Israeli opponent withdraws, and growing theme of NOCs rejecting rightfully qualified athletes should really provide the impetus to create a “stateless” category of athletes. Those could be athletes who chose not to represent a country, but rather compete as an individual (self-fundraising, managing, etc.)

That sounds cool, but would end up being filled with athletes from big nations which have stricter qualifying criteria than the IF's (like the Dutch for the Olympics, most sports have stricter requirements than just qualifying internationally).

Bullshit as it is, countries/NOC's do have a right to choose whether or not they want certain extra tight criteria. And the World Athletics system nowadays is just plain weird anyway, with great performances not being as important as choosing the 'right' place to compete and even hoping that some athletes will not start so the field gets smaller (and you get a higher placing).

The problem with the ranking system, is that it is build for the big nations and extremely discriminate small countries. Athletes from "unimportant" countries have basically no chance to be invited to big meetings and thus will never win big points to this ranking, so richer will remain richer and send hundreds of athletes while we others minnows will struggle to barely qualify a handful of only our best of the best and also lucky enough athletes who get points at least thanks to national championships, but need there also a performance much more valuable than some others need during the whole period..

my 2 cents

Yea never really understood the rankings, especially for field events.

But those athletes could easily be banned by national committes if they refuse to represent their countries and I can't see how WA or any governing body would side with some individuals (no matter how successful they are) over national sporting bodies when it comes to global or continental championships.

Then I don’t want to hear any arguments from IFs/IOC that international sports are apolitical because that’s clearly and simply untrue.

You come from a country where there isn't any national governing body to a large degree (the closest to being one is NCAA). Majority of most popular US sports are run by billionaire owners and most popular Olympic sports are focused on the so-called stars that pull the rest of the team & even the entire sport. The same way CFB football brings revenue for college volleyball, lacrosse or whatever other sports are played on campus.

You clearly don't understand that in most countries even the most popular sports are short on funds and rely on government support. Poland's biggest athletics star of the last decade is Anita Włodarczyk and pictured below is her club stadium where she started - ruins dating to mid 60s. Could you imagine Oregon, USC or Ohio State producing world class athletes on such junkyards? Of course not but I don't blame you that you live in US sporting bubble and don't realize how much other countries are struggling with sports like athletics which is globally important but also dominated by a few selected countries that take majority of the shares.

There are no independent athletes. You can never ever remove the nationality of a person, they are born with it. And if that person achieves something extraordinary, the state and its people will use it for national pride. As long as we have nation states, this will not change. Hungarian people even take pride in the fact that Hungarian born scientists helped to build the first nuclear bomb (Teller and Szilárd, they are featured in the new Oppenheimer movie), and they were as far removed from the Hungarian state as any Hungarian born person can be on this world. You can't make anything apolitical, it's not how the world works.

I mean, this goes without saying. You can see in the medal and gold medal distribution of the Olympic Games. The moment the Eastern European block moved into a capitalist system, they immediately lost ground compared to Western Europe at the Games. The Games were far less one sided 20-30 years ago. Hungary is only managing to hold on somewhat successfully because Orbán pretty much created the same centralized system that worked during the Soviet era, he's putting an insane amount of state funds into Hungarian sports. We would be on the level of Bulgaria if Orbán wouldn't view sports as an important part of the Hungarian national pride/spirit. And you can't possibly expect Hungarian sports to work on this level in any other system, we are waaay too behind Western Europe and we will never catch them, even if a liberal capitalist genius takes over as PM, it's impossible.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
