Not exactly comparable cases.

to me, it's the same

one got caught (and got half the punishment she deserved thanks to the most ordinary excuse), the other just escaped getting caught with a Copperfield move (and didn't get any punishment at all), but the outcome is exactly the same: since their comeback, they're stealing medals from others who deserve more than them

:CHN winning their first ever WC medal in men's 50 m backstroke

So historical to the extent that CCTV replayed the full race 5 minutes after it finished

Why would you watch CCTV, are you currently in Chengdu? Lots of people hate the CCTV broadcasting in China because it always cut the interview and podium parts instead of replay and commercial ADs.

All of Meilutytė's best results were achieved 10 years ago (until these championships) when she was the most tested Lithuanian athlete and they're definitely testing her left, right & center now. She was already not racing for nearly a year when that 'scandal' caught up with her.

She never used anything that would help enhance a swimmer's performance.

At that point she didn't even think about being a competitive swimmer ever again.

The ban helped free her from our media outlets & "fans" harrassing her after every bad result and calling her fat, to creating this entire rivalry with Jefimova to get more clicks at Rūta's expense. And from the swimming federation that pushed her, because we needed more golds. Plus a hefty amount of family issues on top. People even destroyed her tree in Kaunas that was planted to commemorate her Olympic gold, because she didn't win gold in 2016. So I'm just celebrating the fact that she's alive and how she took back control of her life and even made a historical comeback through sheer willpower.

I understand how the details might look to an outside viewer with no behind the scenes information, but in the Lithuanian sports scene additional things are known during her USA stint, because there were other Lithuanian athletes that stayed in USA at that time and rumours spread like wildfire.

Yet....surely swimming will at some point finally get the extra medal event they so desperately need?

Nah, they'll add the 50m events first, more medals.

Spoiler

For full medal saturation they should just add the short course swimming events during the second week of the Olympics. :p

No, it’s because our national TV often cuts to “live video games competition” during this World Champs and my aunt shared a stream of CCTV as an alternative.

Indeed they often cut podiums and rebroadcast it later (plus lots of ads), but that’s better than showing 30 to 45 minutes of the competition each evening before abruptly showing something that is barely can be called a sport.
