I got to attend the Greek National Championships this past weekend! It was a great experience for me. We hadn’t had anything important in Thessaloniki in athletics since the 2009 World Athletics Final, which I remember wanting to go to but did not (I was a lot younger). We had the U20 National Championships last year and I could not go that weekend although it went well so now we got the National Championships for seniors.

The stadium seats 28.000 so it was going to be hard to fill obviously, but it’s located very close to the city centre so it’s easily accessible. I’m not sure how it is in other countries but for Greece these were decent crowds for athletics. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I think if we host again next year it will be even better. They are saying we want to host something bigger in the future. It’s a nice stadium and the local football club that uses it hasn’t been in the first division for several years so we might as well.

Tentoglou was definitely the highlight (he won with a wind assisted 8.32) and the crowds were really big for his jumps, everyone went close to the sand pit. The women’s pole vault was disappointing. Stefanidi didn’t compete, Kyriakopoulou NM and Polak won with an abysmal 4.25. However we did have a 17 yo local girl (Iliana Triantafyllou) set a new PB of 4.15 (she previously had 4.13 from last week’s U20 National Championships) so that is quite exciting.

Men’s triple jump we had 40 yo Tsiamis win for the 100th time. He only had one valid jump and it was 16.82. The men’s hammer was also cool with 5 guys over 70m including a 19 yo (Ioannis Korakidis). Frantzeskakis won with 77.95. Stamatia Scarvelis won the women’s with 70.31, which confirms that she will be in Eugene. She’s had many throws this year over 70m, but all were in small events that didn’t give many points until the last two weekends as she won the Balkans and Nationals.

Karalis and Tzengko won their events but were far from their best. The men’s 100m was really impressive with a lot of guys getting good times, most of them very young too. The women’s sprints were disappointing as we have three “stars” but only one competed in each event. Spanoudaki has covid, Emmanouilidou just came back from injury and only ran the 100, and Anastasiou only ran the 200. The women’s 400 was nice. Vasiliou won with 52.32 after not competing in this distance since Tokyo, and 34 yo Ferra with a new PB after so many years (53.19).

The women’s 100 hurdles was another good event, as we got to see the young Karagianni vs. experienced Pesiridou. Karagianni beat her at the Balkans but Pesiridou got revenge here (13.18 and Karagianni had 13.21). The men’s 110 hurdles, women’s discus, women’s 400 hurdles, men’s high jump, men’s javelin, women’s shot put were all boring with one clear favourite winning as expected.

The men’s shot put, men’s discus and women’s high jump each had several contenders and should have been interesting but in the end the performances were much lower than expected. The women’s triple jump was really poor (Papachristou either quietly retired or is pregnant again and Karydi seems to be regressing). The women’s long jump was somewhat interesting with a lot of young talents who are decent but nothing special. A local girl (Vasiliki Chaitidou) won it with 6.47 which is close to her PR of 6.49. Her progression has been impressive. 5.79 in 2019, 6.08 in 2020, 6.24 in 2021 and now 6.49 in 2022.

I'm trying to post some photos but it says the files are too big.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Jim Thorpe has been reinstated as the sole winner of the 1912 Olympic pentathlon and decathlon in Stockholm — nearly 110 years after being stripped of those gold medals for violations of strict amateurism rules of the time.

The International Olympic Committee announced the change Friday on the 110th anniversary of Thorpe winning the decathlon and later being proclaimed by King Gustav V of Sweden as “the greatest athlete in the

Good day!

If anybody is looking for some European time zone friendly athletics action, then look no further than this.

Today and tomorrow in Vilnius we're having our annual Baltic U18 & U20 championships, where Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have to put forward two athletes into every competition and the points are tallied for every event.

The broadcast is not in English, but often I just watch and have music playing in the background :p

For quite a few athletes, this is the final competition in preparation for the World U20 championships and for others, a start before the European Youth olympic festival.

Starts in less than 30 minutes

Yesterday and today, the President's cup was held where Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian athletes have to send forward 2 athletes in every discipline to collect points and Lithuania managed to beat Estonia by two points this year.

There were quite a few that missed the event in preparation for the European Championships, but there were still some decent news.

The President's cup is awarded to the best male and female performer, both went to Lithuania, Gediminas Truskauskas with 20.65 in 200m and Dovilė Kilty with 14.14 in Triple Jump and she hasn't jumped this far since 2020, looking positive with ECH soon.

    • If lacrosse can be selected then I don't see why Australian rules football can't be selected if they get Olympic sport recognition. Australia will obviously dominate, but there's enough other nations to make a tournament.   As for netball, a women's only event is still much more likely to be accepted than a men's only event. Australia and the netball federation can spin it as bringing equality to the number of men's and women's events (while obviously ignoring that there will be more women at the Olympics).
    • The NFL are pushing had to develop flag football in Australia in hopes of getting it included in 2032. I hope they fail tbh.   Single gender sports fail the gender equality requirement so netball is out unless they can rapidly fix their gender problem. World Netball not so long ago was refusing utterly to sanction men's international netball or even support the growth of men's netball so they kind of sabotaged themselves and are only changing courses out of self interest because Brisbane was awarded the Olympics.   It doesn't even make sense to propose Aussie rules given how poor the participation is outside of Australia.
    • - Great Britain Team Size Prediction for Winter Olympic Games 2026 Milano Cortina   Ski Sports   Alpine Skiing  (4) - The qualification system is a bit confusing, but from what I gather the team is Guaranteed 2 quotas (one for each gender), and then more are given for rankings. I can only see 1 female qualifying, but the men's team is a bit stronger, and could improve with some juniors coming through. I would say a baseline of 3, with a max of 5, 6 if things really improve.  Cross Country Skiing  (3) - The men's team came 11th in the world cup last year, and with some good results could move up to top 10 which would give 3 quotas, The women's team is non existant.  Ski Jumping  (0) - Nope Nordic Combined  (0) - Nope Freestyle Skiing  (6) - Based on last year rankings, the athletes are ranked: M Moguls (26/30), M Ski Cross (26/32), M Halfpipe (33/25), M Slopestyle (39+40/30) W Moguls (23+42/30), W Halfpipe (3/25), W Big Air (5/30), W Slopestyle (19+22/30)  Barring Injury , thats 2 quotas on the women's side, and I would predict 4 more, with a max team of 7 or 8. Snowboarding  (2) - W Halfpipe (34/25) is the only unknown quota, as both Charlotte Bankes and Mia Brookes should qualify easily. Huw Nightlingale may get a spot for the Mixed Team snowboard cross but I don't know how it works. Biathlon  (0) - Nope Ski Mountaineering  (0) - Nope     Skating Sports   Speed Skating  (2) - Cornelius Kersten and Elia Smelding should qualify, although they both haven't competed this year. Short Track Speed Skating  (2) - A team of 5 went to the world but only a couple could really qualify Figure Skating  (4) - Fear and Gibson should qualify, and the pair team is ranked 16th in the world with 19 qualifiers.      Sleigh Sports   Luge  (0) - Nope Skeleton  (6) - A full team is certainly on the cards, but with only ranking points from the next season counting a lot could change Bobsleigh  (6) - Brad Hall and Co should qualify for both 2 and 4 man. I doubt any more will qualify from the mens side. Adele Nicholl on the womens should also qualify in both events     Team Sports   Curling  (12) - Anything but a full team would be a dissapointment Ice Hockey  (0) - The men were the only chance       Total Optimistic Prediction  -  (60) Total Pessimistic Prediction  - (32)   Total Realistic Prediction  -  (47)
