I wonder what the table would be like CAS allowed the rights of clean athletes to be respected and banned anything Russia.

We get it, you hate the Russians. You have already repeated pretty much the same thing 20 times today.

After Day 7 Rio: 118/306 events, 62 NOCs with medals

After Day 7 Tokyo: 133/339 events, 70 NOCs with medals

On the seventh day in Rio, the :USA US team ran away from the rest (20-13-17 in Rio). Now they chase :CHN China (13-10-14 in Rio) which had their best day yet. :JPN Japan (7-3-14 in Rio) continues to bring joy to their fans. With more to come, they have already surpassed the 1964 Olympics in terms of gold medals won (16). With :ROC Russians also keeping the pace (5-9-8 in Rio), we should continue to see an exciting battle for the first four places until the end.

Success also for the :AUS Australians (5-6-7 in Rio), already more Olympic victories than in Rio.

Big improvements so far by the :CZE Czechs (1-0-1 in Rio). Absolutely on their way making it the most successful summer games in history.

:UGA Uganda back after not medalling last time and also tying 1968 and 1972 for most medals one in one summer games.

It's not looking good yet for the :ESP Spaniards (3-0-2 in Rio). Some of their stronger events are yet to come but after a good performance at the recent judo world championships had them dreaming of converting that into medals. They leave judo in Tokyo without.

The highest-placing team at that point still without medal here (aside from the absent :PRK North Koreans) is :SWE Sweden (1-2-1 in Rio).

4th place counter*

(14) :USA

(12) :GBR

(9) :CAN

(7) :CHN:HUN:ITA:FRA

(6) :NED:ROC

(5) :GER:JPN:MEX:KOR:TUR

(4) :GEO

(3) :BEL:DEN:SUI:UKR

(2) :AUS:BRA:TPE:ISR:NOR:POL:SLO:UZB

(1) :ALB:ARG:AZE:BLR:BIH:BUL:COL:CIV:CRO:CUB:CZE:ETH:FIN:HKG:LTU:NIG:POR:ROU:SRB:SGP:ESP:THA:VEN and the Refugee Olympic Team

*5th places in events that award two bronze medals

I am probably the last person here who would be pro-Russia - by "Russia" I mean here the regime led by Dear Leader Vladimir Vladimirovich and all state and administrative structures (sporting bodies included), but even I feel that this "Russia, Russia, Russia" thing has gone too far here. Sometimes it just feels like an intelectually lazy cop-out or excuse

@QuasitAre you counting boxing QF losers in your fourth place finishers ?

I was asking that myself earlier and I probably should since these are all placements one shy of a medal.

The next update will include them.

We are done for today and we won't win any medals tomorrow, so I want to compare the last few Games for us after Day 9.

2004: 2-4-1 (0-1-1 in swimming, 1-2-0 in fencing, 1-0-0 in shooting, 0-1-0 in weightlifting)

2008: 0-4-1 (0-3-0 in swimming, 0-0-1 in fencing, 0-1-0 in wrestling)

2012: 4-1-3 (1-0-1 in swimming, 1-0-0 in fencing, 1-0-0 in athletics, 1-0-0 in gymnastics, 0-1-1 in judo, 0-0-1 in wrestling)

2016: 5-3-4 (3-2-2 in swimming, 2-1-1 in fencing, 0-0-1 in athletics)

2020: 2-2-2 (1-1-0 in swimming, 1-1-1 in fencing, 0-0-1 in judo)

So yeah, this ain't great, but I always thought that the second week is stronger for us this time. The problem is that I am not all that confident about how Canoe Sprint will go for us, we can easily end up with only 1 gold medal, and at that point we are looking at a repeat of Beijing. It's safe to say that this most likely won't be a great Olympic Games for :HUN, unless a miracle happens in the last 7 days and everything goes right for us, like in Athens.

I would also like to say that the first thing I noted about Rio 5 years ago that Hosszú and Kozák saved us, and that if our Olympic team can't step up their game for Tokyo, the next Games won't go all that well for Hungary. Well, here we are, and it isn't going as well as Rio, this is what happens when we don't have that many world class athletes anymore at their best, we don't have Berki and Pars anymore, and Hosszú is also done collecting gold medals. We have very few events this time where we are among the favorites for the gold.

    • So, JTB and Tarjei had 19 podium finishes in 2024/25, seeing as they're retired and won't be competing next season, thought it would be fun to do a completely unnecessary and inaccurate simulation of what breakthroughs next season might have:   The most decorated biathletes of this season without Boes would be as follows:   Laegreid: 6-6-3 Perrot: 4-2-2 Jacquelin: 3-1-1 Samuelsson: 2-2-2 Stroemsheim: 2-0-2 Wright: 2-0-1 Fillon-Mallet: 1-5-2 Giacomel: 1-5-1 Uldal: 1-0-3 Soerum: 1-0-2   Some interesting things happen, for example, Wright becomes sprint and pursuit world champion, Mandzyn gets a very rare podium for Ukraine at the start of the season. Horn and Frey get their first ever podium in world cup and Riethmueller gets a world cup victory.   For the nation medal table, Norway still convincingly takes first place:   Norway: 10-7-11 France: 8-11-5   And then everybody else fighting for scraps:   Sweden: 2-2-3 United States: 2-0-1 Italy: 1-5-1 Germany: 1-0-2 Slovenia: 1-0-0   Even without the Boes, only 9 countries on the podium, but Pidruchnyi for Ukraine comes in 4th for three times, other than that, only Finland and Switzerland were close to getting onto the podium. With how things are going, seems like it's going to be Norway's year next year too with all the hungry youngsters with two extra spots on the Norwegian team.
