  1. Today marks 124 years since the beginning of modern Olympic Games. Tokyo2020 will commemorate the 125th anniversary of the games next year.
  2. I believe there’s a few on the Olympic Channel, but don’t quote me on that. I do too much searching to keep crap straight anymore.
  3. What does a Comoros coup look like? All 15 people that live there gang up on the guy in charge?
  4. This seems a bit too much to me. The exceptions are good, but the enforcement of these codes by the military worries me. There’s a point where protection from infection goes too far, I think Slovakia continues to play with that threshold...
  5. I was born 9 days after the flame was extinguished
  6. I did exist though at this point (from a technical standpoint)
  7. Well, huh. Only points 3 and 4 mater then Side note: I love the current Rwandan flag
  8. Eswatini is the endonym for the country (meaning the name that the people themselves use), while the Swaziland was the exonym (the name people outside used). They switched to the endonym as a way of distancing themselves from their colonial past.
  9. Explanation for this is quite simple. 1) They had just been through one of the worst wars in modern Africa. 2) They needed colors that weren’t used by a particular faction. 3) Red, Yellow, Green are the Pan-African colors. They represent the unity of Africa and it’s people. They are homage to Ethiopia who strayed independent from European colonization (except for the brief period before and during WW2 when those Italian thugs launched a war on them). 4) You add the R because you know, to be different than Guinea.
  10. @intoronto ITG is reporting that Hamilton has become the preferred Commonwealth Games bid candidate for Canada! Now they’ll decide rather to go for 2026 or 2030. Personally I prefer 2030 for very obvious reasons (the first edition of the games were held there 100 years earlier), so hopefully that’s what they go with.
  11. Yeah, those red lines they added are an abomination.
  12. Myanmar wasn’t Myanmar then either...
  13. The most Democratic nation the world!
  14. Yeah they adopted the new flag just before the Arab Spring I think...maybe after. It’s hard to keep track of the political comings and going’s of the Arab questions.
  15. I just realized that Libya will still have their dumb green flag here
  16. Sydney came just after the end of the War of Independence against Indonesia I think. That was a long/bloody conflict (as those usually are)
  17. The very little French I know comes from ceremonies, and the names of sports/equipment/dates on multi-sports website. Plus, like Spanish, some of the words are similar to their English counterparts.
  18. I highly interested in the Sun-God rituals of the ancient Rabatababa people. I love the “ceremony” parts of the ceremony. The show, raising the flags, anthems, etc. (just not the speeches, those can go (and I feel like we can all agree on that). It’s one of the coolest ways to learn the culture and history of a country. Plus, I’m about to go through 16 incredible days of sport, give me an awesome cultural performance before that!
  19. And there goes a trivia question...
  20. Nap time! I love that athletes get a moment in the spotlight, it just isn’t my cup of tea.
  21. I know footage exists from those games, but I don’t know how watchable it is
  22. I will say that while I’m upset Covid has taken love sports from us, it has also given previously unuploaded replays
  23. This is well written article about Calexit: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190221-what-if-california-seceded-from-the-us I’ve some other articles that bring up better points and scenarios, but this one is good too.
  24. No, the need for more ventilators is not open to debate. They are necessary to the medical treatment of those infected, even if they aren’t a cure. Doctors and other medical workers also need proper protection equipment. I feel like that shouldn’t be a debatable position either. So far, the US government hasn’t aided hospitals in obtaining either.
